Open-pit mine slope design must be carried out from the economical efficiency and stability point of view. The overall slope angle is the primary design variable because of limited support or reinforce options available. In this study, the slope angle and critical slope height of large coal mine located in Pasir, Kalimantan, Indonesia were determined from safety point of view. Failure time prediction based on the monitored displacement using inverse velocity was also conducted to make up fir the uncertainty of the slope design. From the study, critical slope height was calculated as $353{\sim}438m$ under safety factor guideline (SF>1.5) and $30^{\circ}$ overall slope angle but loom is recommended as a critical slope height considering the results of sensitivity analysis of strength parameters. The results of inverse velocity analysis also showed good agreement with field slope cases. Therefore, failure of unstable slope can be roughly detected before real slope failure.

There are two different methods in the stability analysis of slopes depending upon the 1ocations and the types of assumed failure planes, which are the infinite slope analysis and the finite slope analysis. The infinite slope analysis is simple and easier in its application. However, since the method neglects the end effects and assumes the failure plane to be located at the shallow depth and parallel to the slope, the slopes to be analyzed by the method should be limited to a certain range. Thus, it is intended in this paper to define the infinite slopes whose stability may be analyzed by the infinite slope analysis. As a result, it is obtained that the method of infinite slope analysis may be applied to the slopes which have the ratio of the slope height to the depth of the failure plane of 9 or bigger.
Stability analysis of rocky embankment slopes is done by both the limit equilibrium method and the finite difference method. The height or the rocky embankment is approximately 40 m and the side slope is 1 vertical to 1.5 horizontal. The cohesion and internal friction angle of rock debris are assumed zero and 43$^{\circ}$, respectively. For finite difference analysis, strength reduction method is used to calculate the saft factor of the slope. As a result, the safety factor of the slope is discovered to be 1.4 by using either methods. Considering that the design criteria of the safety factor is 1.3, it can be judged that the rock fragments embankment slope is in a stable state.

In order to examine the characteristic of shallow failure in cut slopes composed of weathered granite soil, this study calculated critical permeability coefficient according to rainfall characteristic in Korea, performed stability analysis according to the representative physical properties of weathered granite soil distributed in Korea such as horizontal distance to the failure surface of cut slope, slope inclination, slope height, and the depth of wetting by rainfall, and analyzed the results. In the results of analyzing critical permeability coefficient, when the local rainfall characteristic was considered, the maximum critical permeability coefficient was $7.16{\times}10^{-4}cm/sec$. We judged that shallow failure according to wetting depth should be considered when rainfall below the critical rainfall intensity lasts longer than the minimum rainfall duration in cut slopes composed of weathered granite soil, which had a critical permeability coefficient lower than the maximum critical permeability coefficient. Furthermore, using simulated failure surface, this study could understand the characteristic of shallow failure in cut slopes based on the change in slope safety factor according to horizontal distance, wetting depth, and strength parameter.
In general, it has been usually used the method that assess rock slope stability using stereographic projection method, limit equilibrium analysis, numerical analysis and slope stability evaluation table. Several methods for assessing the stability of rock slopes has been proposed on the basis of site investigation data. These method adopted different evaluation items and weighting factors by researchers, organization and nation. But the researches for each evaluation items were insufficient. So the effectiveness of rock slope stability evaluation items for geometrical configuration (slope height, slope direction and angle, dip and dip direction of major discontinuity, absolute value for the direction difference for slope and major discontinuities) and topographical characteristic (possibility of topographical water concentration, upper natural slope angle, slope configuration) using 315 failure and stable highway rock slope analysis data, AV (abnormal value) analysis and NMAV (normalized maximum abnormal value) analysis were evaluated.
In the slope stability analysis and design, Limit Equilibrium Method (LEM) and Shear Strength Reduction technique (SSR) are mainly used. Both methods are able to perform two and three dimensional analysis. SSR is considered to be more sensitive and more reasonable than LEM by many researchers. However, in practice LEM is still widely used because of the increase of analysis time and complexity of the model in SSR. In this study, three dimensional analysis of the protruding rock slope is performed by SSR in order to study the effects of protruding length using rock slope FLAC 3D. In this study, as results of analysis variations of the safety factor have been studied according to slope angle, slope height, the soil strength, protruding slope length projected variables. The results show that the factor of safety as more affected by the shapes of the protruding rock slope than the rock strength.
The target of this study is large scale rock slope collapsed by around 7 pm on August, 2012, which is located at ${\bigcirc}{\bigcirc}$ limestone quarries of Gangneung city, Gangwondo. The slope prior to the collapse is formed as the height of about 200 m and the average inclination of $45^{\circ}$. The estimated amount of the collapse is about $1,500,000m^3$ with respect to the slope after the collapse. Geotechnical and field investigations such as boring, geophysical prospecting, surface geological survey, geological lineaments, borehole imaging, metric 3D imaging, experimental and field test, mining work by year, and daily rainfall were performed to find the cause of rock slope failure. Various analyzes using slope mass rating, stereonet projection, limit equilibrium method, continuum and non-continuum model were conducted to check of the stability of the slope. It is expected that the cause of slope failure from the results of various analysis and survey is due to the combined factors such as topography, rainfall, rock type and quality, discontinuities, geo-structural characteristics as the limestone cavity and fault zones, but the failure of slope in case of the analysis without the limestone cavity is not occurred. Safe factor of 0.66 was obtained from continuum analysis of the slope considering the limestone cavity, so the ultimate causes of slope failure is considered to be due to the influence of limestone cavity developed along fault zone.
The change of water level in reservoirs is an important factor causing failure of bank slopes, i.e. landslide. The water level of Three Gorges reservoir in China fluctuate between 145 m and 175 m, as a matter of flood control. During its normal operational state, the rate of water level fluctuation is supposed to range from 0.67 m/d to 3.0 m/d. Majiagou slope is located on the left bank of Zhaxi River, 2.1 km up from the outlet. Zhaxi River is a tributary of the Yangtze River within the Three Gorges area, of which the water level changes with the reservoir. At the back of Majiagou slope, a 20 m long and 3~10 cm wide fissure developed just after the reservoir water level rose from 95 m to 135 m in 2003. This big fissure was a full suggestion of potential failure of this slope. In this study, the pore water pressure files obtained from seepage analysis were used to evaluate the change in factor of safety (FS) with reservoir water level. Slope stability analyses then were carried out, with fully specified slip surface and limit equilibrium method. In the limit equilibrium analysis, the contribution of negative pore water pressure to shear strength was considered by the use of Fredlund's shear strength equation for unsaturated soils. On the base of the analyses, the change of FS with reservoir water level was interpreted in detail. It was found that FS against bank slopes decreases with the rise of the reservoir water level and increases with the drawdown of the reservoir water level. The most dangerous state was when the reservoir water level stays at the highest for a long time.
Though the stability analysis of soil slopes widely employs the limit equilibrium method, the study on the jointed rock slopes must consider the direction of joint and the characteristics of Joint at the same time. This study analyzes the result of the change in the factors which show the characteristics of discontinuity and the shape factor of rock slopes, and so on, in an attempt to validate the propriety as to the interpretation of jointed rock slope stability which uses the general finite element program. First, the difference depending on the flow rules was compared, and the factor effect study was conducted. The selected independent variables included the direction of joint which displays the mechanical characteristics of discontinuity, adhesive cohesion, friction angle, the inclination and height of rock slope which reveal the shape of slope and surcharge load. And the horizontal displacement was numerically interpreted at the 1/3 point below the slope, a dependent variable, to compare the relative degree of factor effects. The findings of study on factor effects led to the validation that the result of horizontal displacement for each factor satisfied various engineering characteristics, making it possible to be applied to stability interpretation of jointed rock slope. A modelling is possible, which considers the application of the result of real geotechnical surveys & laboratory studies and the non-linear characteristics when designing the rock slope. In addition, the stress change which may result from the natural disaster, such as precipitation, and the construction, can be expressed. Furthermore, as the complicated rock condition and the ground supporting effect can be considered through FEM, it is considered to be very useful in making an engineering decision on the cut-slope, reinforcement and so on.
Soil nailing method was often designed by the slope stability analysis based on limit equilibrium. However, in the case of shorten length of nails, although the calculated factor of safety is within the design factor of safety, the horizontal displacement of soil nailed walls occurred above the allowable limit. In this study, relationship between the load and factor of safety, and relationship between the load and displacement ratio based on the test results were analysed. From the analysed results, the relationship between factor of safety and displacement ratio was estimated. For the mobilized horizontal displacement of the walls within the serviceability limit corresponding to the displacement of less than 0.3% displacement ratio, the calculated factor of safety by limit equilibrium analysis had to satisfy above 1.35. Also, although the minimum factor of safety is estimated above 1.35, the maximum horizontal displacement is often mobilized above 0.3% of excavation height. Therefore, it is necessary to perform the numerical analysis of soil nailed walls in the case of low shear strength or high excavation.
