최근 나온 개정판들을 보며 한 소장학자는 "관련분야의 정보를 모두 수렴하고 재해석, 새로써야 하는 그 방대한 작업은 학자라고 해서 아무나 할 수 있는 일은 아니다"고 높이 평한다. '학문적 성실함'의 표본이 될 만한 역저의 개정판이 많아진다는 것은 우리학계의 신진대사가 그만큼 활발해진다는 증거에 다름아니다.

The purpose of this study was to investigate biologists' brain activation patterns during the generation of scientific questions on biological phenomena. Eight right-handed healthy biologists volunteered to be participants in the present study. The question-generation tasks were presented in a block design. The BOLD signals of the biologists' brain were measured by 3.0T fMRI system and data were analyzed using Statistical Parametric Mapping (SPM2). According to our results, the left inferior and middle frontal gyri, the medial prefrontal cortex, the bilateral hippocampus, the occipito-parietal route, the fusiform gyrus, and the cerebellum were activated significantly during the generation of scientific questions. Therefore, we suggested that generating scientific question is associated with analyzing observed situations, using verbal strategy, retrieving episodic memories for comparisons, and feeling cognitive conflicts.

Geomancy (feng-shui in Chinese and Pungsu in Korean) has had a significant impact on the Korean culture and is still practiced by many Koreans. This art is thought to have originated from the early Chinese people's search for an ideal site for preparing a cave dwelling. Ever since geomancy was introduced to Korea, it has been a crucial factor in the development of the Korean cultural landscape and the Korean geomentality. The current tendency of avoiding research into geomancy by the Korean geographers might have developed from their desire to avoid wrongly labeling themselves as geomancers and their discipline as geomancy studies. The geographer\`s aim of studying geomancy is not to prove the truthfulness of geomantic doctrines, but is to document and explain the impact of geomancy on the Korean culture.

지난해 인문학 위기를 둘러싼 인문대학 학장들의 논란이 있어왔는데, 이 선언을 바라보는 시선은 냉소적이다. 오늘날은 오히려 인문정신을 더 절실하게 추구하는 시대로 인문대학 학장들의 성명은 현실의 변화를 너무 확대해석한 것이 아닐까 싶다. 인문학의 위상이 떨어지고 있고, 대학이 취업과 직접 연결되는 사회 분위기에서 인문학 전공학과가 어느 정도 구조조정의 대상이 되는 것은 피할 수 없다. 따라서 인문학 고유의 학문 특성을 대학이라는 제도 안에서 구현하기 위해서 인문학은 대학 교양교육에 더 적극적이고 주도적으로 참여해야 하며, 인문학자의 본령이 무엇인지 재정립해야 한다. 또한 인문학자들은 인류가 당면한 현재의 문제에 대해 적극 발언해야 한다. 결국 인문학의 위기는 인문학 연구자 스스로 극복하려고 노력했을 때 진정한 극복의 가능성을 발견할 수 있다.

It is generally found that geography majors' progression in society has a very limited scope in Korea and this is one of the causes of lessening geographers' job market. As an attempt to draw a solution to this problem, this paper, by a close examination of the French case, tries to discuss the possibility of geographers' participation in the public sector. Geographers' participation in political and social issues has long history. They acted as providers of geographical knowledge on human and physical features of the world and also as counsellors for effective administration and politics. French geographers evaluate that it is the characteristics of geography that enable geographers to progress into the public sector. They also perceive that such fields as regional development, environment, economy, tourism, international politics are possible ones for geographers. Some implications can be drawn from this case study to extend geographers' participation in the pubic sector in Korea; it is required to sustain open mind to every field of social sciences, to improve specialized as well as generalized knowledge on geographical features, and to provide practical knowledge on spatial analysis and management.

The purposes of this study were to examine the college tuition and student aid policies in the USA and to provide implications to Korean higher education. To accomplish these purposes, college tuition policies and student financial aid policies by federal and state governments in the United States were analyzed. Regarding tuition policies, the federal government has tried to minimize the impact of recent tuition increases by using methods like establishing various college affordability acts and government regulations. As a result, the federal government established a new law and was able to publicize a list of higher education institutions charging higher tuition levels and increasing tuition and fees at a higher rate. State governments also have introduced and implemented tuition policies such as tuition caps and linking tuition increase to student financial aid. Regarding student financial aid policies, Obama administration has emphasized grant programs which, unlike loan programs, have no further burden placed upon students. These efforts certainly produced desired results. Related policy implications from this study were provided for tackling tuition issues in Korean higher education.

Journalism and Mass Communication as an academic field is believed more politicized one than pure literature and natural science. With the growth of the media, there follows additional opportunities for media scholars to take a part in politics as well. Few attention was given to understand the status and mechanism of political intervention either as advisers or decision makers though. This study attempts thus to fill this vacuum. For this, first of all, it examines a various types of laws related to media politics. Total number of 164 scholars who participated in 12 councils and commissions were analyzed on the following step. Research shows that there are patterns which favor Seoul National University, U.S. trained Ph. D and geographic preference to the capital. Neither academic excellence nor commitment to public interest appear to have impact on taking those positions. Taking into account media's expansion into politics, it is inevitable for media scholars to take responsibility not only in policy making but in taking leadership. Accordingly, the question of necessity is not who but how as much as manner. The authors hope this study will be a valuable opportunity to establish a kind of ethical standards in media politics.

The purpose of this paper is to substantially analyse the patterns of complements considering the aspects of not only syntax but also morphology since the concept of complement has been used as a term to analyse the components of a sentence. However, it cannot be denied that there seemed to be limitations due to the partial explanation or different explanations of the same sentence. Thus, this paper aims at dealing with the close relation between sentential components and suffixes to examine the sentence patterns; subject, predicate, object, complement, and adjunct focusing on the terms of complement which has been seen problematic due to incomplete explanations and different interpretations of the same sentence. Finally, this paper synthesises various opinions of many scholars and integrates them to get explicit and practical patterns of complement of a sentence based on not only syntax but also morphology through close relation between sentential components and morphological suffixes.
