A Study on the Instructional Model utilizing Scratch for Introductory Programming Classes of SW-Major Students (SW전공자 프로그래밍 입문 수업의 스크래치 활용 수업 모형 연구)

  • The programming language is a core education area of software that is becoming increasingly important in the age of the fourth industrial revolution, but it requires mathematical knowledge and logical thinking skills, so that many local private university and college students with low basic skills are having difficulties learning it. This problem occasionally causes SW-major students to lose interest and confidence in their majors during the introductory course of programming languages; making them change their majors, or give up their studies. In this study, we designed an instructional model using Scratch for educating C-language which is a typical programming introductory language. To do this, we analyzed the concepts that can be trained by Scratch among the programming concepts supported by C-language, and developed the examples of Scratch for exercising the concepts. In addition, we designed an instructional model, by which the programming concepts are first learned through Scratch and then C-language is taught, and conducted an experiment on the SW-major freshman students of a local private university to verify the effectiveness of the model. In the situation where SW education is becoming common, we expect that this study will help programming language education of security IT students.

The Meta-Analysis on Effects of Python Education for Adolescents (청소년 대상 파이썬(Python) 활용 교육의 효과에 대한 메타분석)

  • This study intends to examine effects of python education for adolescents. 6 primary studies were chosen through careful search process and investigated through meta-analysis. Research findings were as follows. The total effect size was 0.684. Second, the effect sizes of dependent variables were academic achievement 0.871, cognitive domain 0.625, and affective domain 0.428 in order. Third, for cognitive domain, the effect sizes were self-efficacy 0.833, problem-solving 0.283, computing thinking 0.276, and coding competency 0.251 in order. Fourth, for affective domain, the effect sizes were learning interest 0.560 and programming interest 0.417 in order. Fifth, regarding school level, the effect sizes were middle school 0.851, high school 0.585, and college 0.435 in order. Finally, for subject areas, the effect sizes were mathematics 1.057, design 0.595, information 0.585, and software 0.28 in order.

The Effects of Case-Based Learning on Problem-Solving Ability, Self-Directed Learning Ability, and Academic Self-Efficacy (사례기반학습이 간호대학생의 문제해결능력, 자기주도학습능력과 학업적자기효능감에 미치는 효과)

  • Purpose : The purpose of this study was to investigate the effect of case-based learning application in human growth development classes on nursing students' problem-solving ability, self-directed learning ability, and academic self-efficacy. Methods : The research method was a self-report questionnaire before and after case-based learning for second-year nursing students who took the human growth development course at U University in K city. The collected data were statistically processed using SPSS WIN 21.0. Results : The results of the study showed that after case-based learning, problem-solving ability, self-directed learning ability, and academic self-efficacy were all significantly improved. In addition, as a result of examining the correlation between each variable after case-based learning, problem solving ability score and self-directed learning ability score (r=.54, p<.01), and problem solving ability scores and academic self-efficacy scores (r=.44, p<.01), were significantly correlated with self-directed learning ability scores and the academic self-efficacy reduction scores (r=.76, p<.01). Conclusion : The results of this study suggested the need for various learning programs such as case-based learning to improve nursing students' problem-solving abilities and self-directed learning abilities and their application. In addition, to improve the learning self-efficacy of nursing students, a continuous and systematic study is suggested to develop and apply customized educational programs according to the learners' preferences. Since the sample group in this study was limited to one university, there were few cases and no control group, so there are limitations in generalizing the test effect, However, significant differences a were verified in the case-based learning pre-tests and post-tests.

Information Seeking Behaviors throughout the Settlement Stages among International Students in Korea (외국인 유학생의 정착단계에 따른 정보추구행위)

  • Despite the increase in the number of international students residing in Korea, there is lack of research on their Everyday Information Seeking behaviors. This study investigated the information needs and information seeking behaviors of international students in Korea according to the settlement stages (before entry, initial settlement, and present) through Critical Incident Technology (CIT). International students in Korea reported their daily life-related information needs more frequently than their academic-related information needs. International students used multiple information sources for seeking information, such as websites, social media, and friends. Compared to websites, international students demonstrated higher satisfaction with interactive sources such as social media and friends. It was found that the language barrier is the biggest difficulty that international students experience during the information seeking process. Unfamiliarity with Korean society and culture were addressed as another difficulty. Based on the understanding of international students' information needs and seeking behaviors throughout the settlement stages, recommendations for helping international students search for information in their daily life were discussed.

  • In the SW education of non-majors who encounter liberal arts education experience difficulties in the SW development environment and understanding they encounter for the first time, relevance to their major, and convergence thinking ability. In order to compensate for the difficulties of non-major learners in liberal arts education, a relatively easily accessible software was used to utilize a demonstration-oriented model that can be applied to beginners in SW education. In order to understand the logical flow of applications and problem solving used in real life, we proposed a convergence SW teaching method that combines repeated implementation through demonstration by the instructor and imitation of the learner, and learning indicators to increase the learning satisfaction and achievement of the learner. In the experiment applying the teaching and learning method proposed in this paper, meaningful results were shown when evaluating the learning effect, academic achievement, learning satisfaction, and teaching and learning method aspects of SW education.

A study on the satisfaction and learning effect using e-portfolio in liberal arts programming classes (교양 프로그래밍 수업에서 e-포트폴리오를 활용한 만족도와 학습 효과에 관한 연구)

  • In this study, an e-portfolio system was constructed and utilized to communicate with students, while processing the overall procedure of teaching-learning activities as data for qualitative improvement in the non-face-to-face educational environment. The e-portfolio system was designed to support the entire process of reflection from the instructor's lesson planning, regular checking of the learner's understanding during the course operation process, online communication, and support for learner-centered educational activities. Analyzing the effectiveness of the communication-based learning effect between instructors and learners using the e-portfolio in liberal arts programming classes, which may be difficult for non-major students, a significant correlation was found in problem-solving skills, and midterm and final exams. Additionally, the result of analyzing the expanded applicability of e-portfolio satisfaction demonstrated a significant correlation with the students' computational thinking ability, test results, assignments, and academic performance. It was found to have a significant effect on the improvement of computational thinking ability. If non-face-to-face education is conducted using the proposed e-portfolio system type, it will be possible to improve the quality of online education, while communicating effectively with students.

  • The purpose of this study is to ermine the effect of digital storytelling as a strategy of programming education to improve students' learning motivation and achievement. To overcome the difficulty of programming education in elementary school and find teaching method which derives the students' motivation, we used a digital storytelling in programming class. Digital storytelling that is considered as an important factor of edutainment gives interest to learners with interaction and stories for programming materials. The result is that elementary school students are more interested in programming and attend actively and their motivation and achievement is improved. Therefore it can gives elementary school students a positive experience with programming that will hopefully contribute to a more positive attitude towards computer science.

Individual and Environmental Factors Influencing the Career Identity of Adolescents - A Study of Chinese-Korean Adolescents in Yanbian, China (청소년의 진로정체감에 영향을 미치는 개인요인과 환경요인 - 중국 연변 조선족 청소년을 중심으로)

  • The purpose of this study is to examine the effects of individual and environmental factors on the career identity of Chinese-Korean adolescents in Yanbian, China. Academic achievement and self-esteem were considered as individual factors, and parent attachment and teacher attachment were considered as environmental factors. This study sought to answer the question "Which individual and environmental factors had an effect on the career identity of Chinese-Korean adolescents in Yanbian, China?" The data was collected from 290 middle school students in Yanbian, China through the use of a survey. The results were as follows: self-esteem as an individual factor and teacher attachment as an environmental factor were found to have a significant effect on career identity. Also, teacher attachment as an environmental factor had the greatest effect on career identity. In the conclusion, we considered theoretical and practical implications of this study to improve the career identity of Chinese-Korean adolescents in China.

A Case Study of Using Creative Teaching Methods: 'National Threats' Learning Task (창의적 교수법 활용 사례: '국가 위협요인' 학습 과제)

  • Creative teaching methods can be beneficial in enhancing creativity and self-directed learning abilities in the classroom. However, there may be some specific learning tasks where applying creative teaching methods can be difficult. This is because students may not have completed the necessary prerequisite learning before performing the learning task, leading to low reliability of task results or meaninglessness. This study aims to propose teaching methods that enhance creativity and self-directed learning ability when performing learning tasks that may not have sufficient prior learning. To achieve this, we present a case of applying creative teaching methods to a learning task called "national threats". As a research procedure, we provide a suitable teaching method model and detailed procedures for the given learning task, and apply them in actual classes. The results showed that applying the presented teaching methods for the learning task produced meaningful academic achievements. This study can be valuable not only for enhancing creativity in education but also for interdisciplinary research in fields such as education and national security.

Analysis of research trends in the healthcare field utilizing extended-reality-based converged contents (확장현실 기반 융복합 콘텐츠를 활용한 보건의료 분야의 연구 동향 분석)

  • Objectives: Extended reality technology offers an innovative opportunity to enhance self-directed learning through interactive processes in healthcare education. This study aims to analyze research trends in the application of extended reality technology-based educational content in the field of healthcare. Methods: Through literature search, selection, and exclusion processes based on predefined criteria, we conducted an analysis of domestic healthcare studies employing extended reality technology, ultimately selecting and examining 39 relevant publications. Results: The analysis reveals diverse applications of extended reality across various fields such as medicine, dentistry, and nursing. Positive effects, including increased academic satisfaction, immersion, and interest, are observed, alongside challenges like media usage difficulties and cybersickness. Conclusions: Future research should focus on the development and application of extended reality-based educational content in diverse healthcare curricula, emphasizing both educational approaches and continuous technological advancements.
