  • This study analyzed Korean studies up to August 2023 to suggest the direction of future research on basic academic abilities in mathematics. For this purpose, frequency analysis and LDA-based topic modeling were conducted on the Korean abstracts of 197 domestic studies. The results showed that, first, 'academic achievement', 'impact', 'effect', and 'factors' were all ranked at the top of the TFs and TF-IDFs. Second, as a result of LDA-based topic modeling, five topics were identified: causes of basic academic abilities deficiency, learning status of math underachievers, teacher expertise in teaching math underachievers, supporting programs for math underachievers, and results of National Assessment of Educational Achievement. As a direction for future research, this study suggests focusing on the growth of math underachievers, systematizing the programs provided to students who need learning support in mathematics, and developing teacher expertise in teaching math underachievers.

  • Grit, defined as "perseverance and passion for long-term goals", is a known personality trait that successfully predicts high performance in various fields. In spite of extant evidence of the effectiveness of grit, research has not yet clarified the relationship between grit and conscientiousness, a highly correlated personality trait. In this study(N = 355), we examined the effect of grit and conscientiousness on academic achievement, mediated by self-determination motivation. As a result, grit and conscientiousness both predicted academic performance, and intrinsic motivation mediated these relationships. However, conscientiousness no longer related with motivation and academic achievement when grit was controlled for, whereas grit maintained its relationship with motivation and achievement even when conscientiousness was controlled. This result indicates that although the two psychological concepts overlap to some extent, grit has a unique motivational and behavioral effect that distinguishes it from conscientiousness. The present study expands the current understanding of grit with its comparison between grit and conscientiousness. We suggest future research ought refine the grit scale to establish its discriminant validity.

  • This study intended to investigate the characteristics of adolescent drug user in Korea. A questionnaire on adolescent drug use was administered to 1st or 2nd grade 898 students (465 males, 433 females) from 9 senior high schools in Seoul area. The extent of current using six representative drugs such as cigarettes, alcohol, chemical substance inducing hallucination(e,g., thinner, bond etc.), psychostimulant, hypnotic and minor tranqulizer was self-reported. Also their psychological distress, self-concept and individual-related variables such as academic grade, deviant behavior, drug-using peers, the perceived availability of drugs, the degree of family discipline, and the perceived parents' attitude for drinking and smoking were surveyed. Subjects were grouped into six(male) or five(female) subgroups (nonuser, simple experiencer, one kind of drug user, two kinds of drugs user, three kinds of drugs user(male only), minor tranqulizer user) to their extent of drug use. Then ANOVA procedure performed for group comparison of their psychological distress, self-concept and individual-related variables. The results showed that the most popular drugs among adolescents in Korea were cigarettes and alcohol. Minor tranqulizer was used by about 2.8% of male and 7.41% of female subjects. In general abusers showed lower academic grade, more deviant experiences, having more drug-using peers, higher degree of psychological distress, and lower postitive self-concept than nonuser group. According to the results of discriminant analysis, hostility and deviant behavior were reliable predictive variables that distinguished abuser group from nonuser group among the associated variables in this study. These results suggest that some common factors affect drug use of Korean high school students : high school students who have many common risk factors could be abusers more easily. These findings supported risk factor theory that the extent of drug use of adolescents might be associated with general maladjustment in everyday life.

  • The purposes of this study were to analyze the mobile learning usages of adult learners and how their perceptions of the mobile learning affects their learning achievements in a cyber-university. 1,118 online adult learners who enrolled in a cyber-university in Korea were involved in this study and the data for their demographic information, mobile learning usages, the perceptions of mobile learning(self-efficacy for mobile learning, perceived ease of use, perceived usefulness, and learning satisfaction) and the learning achievement were collected. The main findings of this study were as follows. First, the subjects in this study showed higher participation rates in the mobile learning with recently introduced mobile devices compared to the results of previous studies. They also showed the need of more learning materials and video streamed lectures. Second, the higher-aged subjects showed relatively higher levels of perception of mobile learning compared to the lower-aged group. Third, the effects of the subjects' perceptions of mobile learning to their learning achievement seem to be limited. It was recommended to enhance the quality of the mobile learning especially considering the relationships between the perceived usefulness and the learning achievement.

  • This study aimed to provide a desirable way to design culinary education programs at university by investigating the relationship between student satisfaction with education and job preference based on their high schools. The results of this study showed that a high percentage of students decided to choose culinary arts as their major by themselves. Most students found a career in the culinary field demanding, nevertheless, they appeared to have a strong desire to take up the challenge. Students from culinary high schools showed low satisfaction with their practical cooking courses, while students from vocational high schools seemed to be highly satisfied with those same courses. On the other hand, students from academic high schools showed a high satisfaction with their theory courses, which factored into their decision to choose culinary arts as their major. However, there appeared to be no significant difference in job preference according to the students. Most students, regardless of satisfaction with their education, considered working abroad. On the basis of these results, it is suggested that a culinary training program in universities should be divided tin three groups; academic, vocational & culinary. Each group to have classes in theory, practical and English designed with respect to their prior high school training. In addition, an opportunity for overseas employment should be offered to all three categories.

  • This study investigated a relationship among facilitating discourse, students' perceived challenge, and learning outcomes(persistent intention and learning achievement) in an online science gifted education program. Two hundreds and forty-two middle school students participated in the study. A survey questionnaire which was consisted of 6 items of facilitating discourse from teaching presence questionnaire(Shea, Swan, & Pickett, 2005) and 5 items of challenge from Student Perceptions of Classroom Quality(Gentry & Owen, 2004) was administered. First, the findings of this study showed that students' perceived facilitating discourse as a part of teaching presence was positively related to students' perceived challenge in an online course. Second, students' perceived facilitating discourse were positively related to persistent intention, but were negatively related to students' achievement. Third, students' perceived challenge was positively related to persistent intention and achievement. Finally, challenge mediated the relationship between students' perceived facilitating discourse and persistent intention, and the relationship between students' perceived facilitating discourse and students' achievement as well. This results suggested that online program should be designed to increase the levels of facilitating discourse.

  • The purpose of this study is to identify the structural relationship among students' grit, interest, self-regulation ability, task-commitment and achievement within science learning. Our concern is understanding how grit is related to the other non-cognitive variables, i.e., interest, self-regulation ability, and task-commitment, which are widely known as significant predictors of science achievement. Based on literature review, we evaluated two hypothetical models in the frame of structural equation modeling as follows: first, grit was assumed to mediate relations of interest and self-regulation ability, and interest and task-commitment. Second, grit was assumed to have a direct effect on self-regulation ability and task-commitment independent of interest. In both models, grit was assumed to be indirectly associated with science achievement. A total number of 180 high school students (77 boys, 103 girls) participated in surveys on grit, interest, self-regulation ability, and task-commitment and reported their science test scores on mid-term/final exams. Results revealed that students' grit and interest were indirectly associated with their science achievement with the mediation of their self-regulation and task-commitment. We also found that task-commitment was highly correlated with interest and self-regulation. Furthermore, we found different patterns of correlations within the five variables between female and male students. From these results, we suggested that researchers need to investigate whether students' grit and task-commitment can explain their interest decreasing as they move to higher grade levels, how teachers can help students to maintain their interest in learning science from early childhood, and relationships of these non-cognitive variables and science achievement.

  • This study was conducted to serve as a basis for education by identifying the correlation of college admission type, college-life satisfaction and academic achievement of radiologic science students. Data were collected from 2 universities and 2 colleges located in Gyeonggi Provice, North Chungcheong Province, North Gyeongsang Province. A total of 371 questionnaires were collected, 363 of which were included in this study. The results showed that there were no differences in academic achievement according to the type of college admission. It could be able to interpret that since department of radiologic science is popular, students with high academic records applies the department of radiologic science and there are less deviation of academic records among students. A correlation analysis of academic achievement showed learning attitude is a statistically valid factor. Learning attitudes can be changed by exposure to the environment. This will require a variety of program development for improving learning attitudes. In addition, academic achievement of radiologic science students is associated with license acquisition. It need to be made together research on determinants and development of learning method to improve the learning attitude.
