Facing the challenge of a high-tech revolution being progressed globally in this period, theological seminaries as the Christian-affiliated institute of higher education see the necessity to nurture their learners' competency of holistic personality comprehending cognitive, affective, behavioral, and more spiritual maturity as well as specialty in each subject matter. The holistic character capability of seminarians is closely related not only to their own self-realization, but also social community's well-being. This research had the following content and results. Chapter 1 brought up a subject to educational needs of the holistic character formation in the theological seminaries to meet the rapidly changing times. Chapter 2 considered the importance of character formation in the curriculum of the universities and theological seminaries in the times of high-tech revolution through the literature reviews related to. Chapter 3 clarified the elements of character education to be placed emphasis on theological seminaries and established the way of course planning. Chapter 4, using a course of Christian social education for illustration, described in order the whole process of course planning comprehending the need of planning, description of course concept, establishment and definition of learning outcomes, organization of learning experience(course content), teaching-learning activities, evaluation of learning outcome, and course improvement, which was visualized with the chart of the process of course design. Also, it provided a practical illustration of the conceptual map, an outline of content and an organization of units, and scope-sequence chart. Finally, chapter 5 gave an syllabus example in an integrative and digestive form as the course plan to be distributed to the students, which is the final result produced through the whole process of course planning. • In order to live up to public expectations, universities dedicate their best efforts to cultivating all Essential Competencies for outstanding individuals, especially reorganizing and improving their general education curricula and methods of teaching and learning, in light of the fact that a cutting-edge technology in a specific field does not bear a long span in the modern society. Through a Grounded Theory approach, the aim of this research is to study undergraduates' Experience Process of Action Learning designed to foster their Essential Competencies. With broadly selected 15 students from the courses for Essential Competencies, the method of theoretical sampling was employed so as to secure the diversity of the subjects' characteristics and backgrounds. After in-depth interviews, the data from the subjects were analyzed on the basis of Grounded theory approach of Strauss and Corbin. The conclusions of this analysis are as follows; Firstly, a learning coach should play a different role depending on the levels of Action Learning. Secondly, some time for introspection should be taken for the effective operation of Action Learning. Thirdly, learners ought to solve the problems faced during the learning process on their own. Fourthly, the aims of courses for Essential Competencies are also needed to be focused.

  • This study aimed to develop an educational program for improving the learning competencies of major courses for Chinese graduate students who account for more than 70% of international students in Korea. In this study, the program was developed using Caffarella and Daffron's interactive model. Due to the internationalization of education, the number of foreigners who study in Korea for degree courses has already exceeded 100,000, but the dropout rate has increased due to the maladjustment to university life. More specifically, they face difficulties in academic achievement because of a lack of understanding lecture contents, conducting research, and presenting in class. Therefore, this study surveyed the Chinese students in the graduate course to identify the difficulties and needs in their study of major courses and to reflect those needs (major knowledge, communication, assignment writing, and presentation) in program development. This study focused on developing an educational program for improving their learning competencies of major courses rather than simply improving Korean language skills or adapting to university life. The results of the study are expected to help Chinese Graduate students perform well in their major course studies and make their study abroad successful.

  • Even though measurement is an important strand of elementary mathematics education, there has been lack of research in this field. This study analyzed topics related to length and time in a series of mathematics textbooks aligned to 2007 or 2009 revised mathematics curriculum. The analysis was focused on three aspects: (a) overall instructional components of measurement, (b) instructional components specific to the topics of measurement, and (c) key competencies in mathematics. The results of this study showed that many topics dealing with length and time were represented with relation to real-life contexts or other subjects. The meanings of measurement terms and the necessity of calculation were well explained but other aspects still had room for improvement when it comes to the necessity of measurement units, appropriate choice of units, and use of students' common misconceptions. Another noticeable result was that problem solving, communication, and reasoning among key competencies in mathematics have been emphasized in the mathematics textbooks. Based on these results, this study provides textbook writers with implications on what to further consider in dealing with length and time.
