  • This study was designed to obtain basic data for the globalization of Korean food and the expansion of food exports through contract foodservices. A survey of dietary habits and attitudes toward school foodservices was given to students in three American international schools served by a domestic contract foodservice management company located in Seoul and Gyeonggi area. The results showed an average of three meals taken daily 3.39 times for male students and 2.95 times for female students and the time required for a meal was about 24~26 minutes. The average breakfast frequency was 5.10 times(4.59 times for male students and 5.35 times for female students) and many students reported skipping breakfast due to a lack of time. The average weekly frequency of dining out was 1.78 times(2.15 times for male students and 1.60 times for female students). In all schools, irrespective of gender and grade, students responded that a desire for snacking was 'why they want to have cookies', and snacking hours were frequently listed as 'between noon and evening'. Many also responded that an unbalanced diet is the reason some snacks are 'not to their taste'. Overall, students were highly satisfied with the foodservice menu, although there was a significant difference in what was considered proper food temperature, proper food seasoning, suitable amounts of food, and freshness of food. Male and female students were specifically highly satisfied with the 'freshness of food materials' and 'variety of menu' respectively. Overall, all students were highly satisfied with the foodservice, including the 'cleanliness of tables and trays'.

  • The purpose of the study was to estimate the trajectories of elementary school adjustment in grades 1 through 4. For the purpose, the Korean Children's Panel data were analyzed using potential growth model and the growth mixture model. As the result, the linear model was selected as the optimal model. The four potential groups were derived as trajectories: high-level maintenance, low-level maintenance, low-level increase, and high-level decrease. In terms of group distribution, the most children were in high-level maintenance group and then low-level maintenance, low-level increase, and high-level decrease in order. Based on the findings that trajectories of elementary school adjustment changes as children growth, we suggest that schools and families need to carefully investigate and support their school adjustment in individual levels.

  • This study examined the effects and continuity of simulation-based KALS education training on the knowledge and self-efficacy of nursing students. The study participants were 41 nursing students in 4th grade in Gyeonggi-do. KALS education was conducted in January 2018. Data collection was conducted one month before and after KALS education and three months later to check the continuity of education. As a result, the knowledge of KALS before education, after education, and three months later were 8.65, 16.34 (p<.001), and 13.36 (p<.001), respectively. The self-efficacy of KALS before education, after education, and three months later were 2.37, 4.07, and 3.40 (p<.001), respectively. Therefore, simulation-based KALS education training is a suitable teaching method for enhancing the knowledge and self-efficacy of nursing students. On the other hand, re-education measures must be performed after three months to maintain the effectiveness of education.

  • Learning efficiency can be maximized by careful matching of text features to expected reader features (i.e., linguistic and cognitive abilities, and background knowledge). The present study aims to explore whether this systematic principle is reflected in the development of science textbooks. The current study examined science textbook texts on 20 measures provided by Auto-Kohesion, a Korean language analysis tool. In addition to surface-level features (basic counts, word-related measures, syntactic complexity measures) which have been commonly used in previous text analysis studies, the present study included cohesion-related features as well (noun overlap ratios, connectives, pronouns). The main findings demonstrate that the surface measures (e.g., word and sentence length, word frequency) overall increased in complexity with grade levels, whereas the majority of the other measures, particularly cohesion-related measures, did not systematically vary across grade levels. The current results suggest that students of lower grades are expected to experience learning difficulties and lowered motivation due to the challenging texts. Textbooks are also not likely to be suitable for students of higher grades to develop the ability to process difficulty level texts required for higher education. The current study suggests that various text-related features including cohesion-related measures need to be carefully considered in the process of textbook development.

  • The purposes of this study were to examine trends in Korean middle school students' attitudes toward science and the differences in boys' and girls' attitudes toward science as well as to analyze Korean middle school students' attitudes toward science compared to those in Singapore, Chinese-Taipei, Hong Kong, and Japan. In order to achieve these purposes, we analyzed students' survey data on self-confidence in science, interests in science, external motivation for science, and career preference for science collected from TIMSS 1995, TIMSS 1999, and TIMSS 2003. Korean students' interests in science and external motivation for science reduced in TIMSS 1999 and increased again in TIMSS 2003. The amount of change was greater in interests in science. On the other hand, self-confidence in science and career preference for science consistently declined from TIMSS 1995 to TIMSS 2003. Self-confidence in science among boys and girls was similar in TIMSS 1995 and 1999. But self-confidence of girls in science declined rapidly from TIMSS 1999 to 2003, while self-confidence of boys in science remained almost the same. Trends of interests in science were similar between boys and girls; they declined in TIMSS 1999 and increased again in TIMSS 2003. External motivation for science of both boys and girls increased, and the increase among girls was greater. The percentage of boys who wanted to have a job using science consistently declined from TIMSS 1999 to TIMSS 2003, while the percentage of girls declined in TIMSS 1999 and increased in TIMSS 2003 again. The results from an international comparison with other Asian countries having similar cultures showed that Korean students' self-confidence in science, career preference for science of middle school students was the lowest.

  • The Trends in International Mathematics and Science Study (TIMSS) announced the TIMSS 2015 results at the end of 2016. In this research, we analyzed the relationship between Korean eighth grade students' attitude toward science and science achievement, trends in students' attitude toward science based on common items used in three to four cycles of TIMSS, and trends across grades in students' attitude toward science. According to the results, Korean eighth grade students showed the lowest level of confidence with science, interest in learning science, and valuing science among the 15 top performing countries as well as all the participant countries. In addition, according to the analysis result of common items, Korean students' confidence with science and interest in learning science have decreased, whereas students' valuing science with instrumental values has increased between TIMSS 2011 and TIMSS 2015. According to trends across grades, the cohort of students, assessed at the fourth grade in TIMSS 2011 and moved to the eighth grade four years later in 2015, decreased in their confidence with science and interest in learning science. Discussed in the conclusion are further studies and ways to improve science teaching and learning to improve students' attitude toward science.

  • Recently, the Ministry of Education stipulates in the distance class operation regulations that student lecture evaluations for distance learning subjects should be conducted at least twice per semester and the results should be disclosed to students. Therefore, the lecture evaluation of D college was compared with the first semester of 2020 and the first semester of 2021. As for the multiple-choice evaluation result of the distance learning mid-course evaluation, the overall average of the mid-course evaluation of the distance class in the first semester of 2020 increased from 4.1819 to 4.4000 in the mid-course evaluation in the first semester of 2021.In the case of the first semester of 2020, due to Corona 19, all non-face-to-face classes were held, but in the first semester of 2021, face-to-face classes increased. The overall satisfaction level rose from 4.18 points in the first semester of 2020 to 4.39 points in the first semester of 2021. The screen composition, sound and picture quality, playback time, face appearance, lecture material provision, and frequency of use of the top 3% and bottom 3% also increased. Despite the changes caused by the LMS replacement, which was a concern, student attendance, assignments, and test submission rates also increased compared to the previous year. The null hypothesis that 'the difference between the two scores is the same' is the null hypothesis because the probability of significance is 0.000 and less than 0.05 in the case of the best 3% of the test result of the test result of the mid-course evaluation of distance classes in the first semester of 2020 and the evaluation of the intermediate lectures in the first semester of 2021. As this was rejected, it can be seen that the best score for the 2021 school year has significantly increased compared to the first semester of 2020. Also, in the case of Worst 3% or less, the significance probability is 0.000, which is less than 0.05, so the null hypothesis that 'the difference between the two scores is the same' was rejected, indicating that the Worst score for the 2021 school year was significantly higher than that for the first semester of 2020.
