  • The gap in academic achievement owing to entrance age in elementary school has been used as important basic data to formulate policies on school entrance system and other educational policies. Other countries have made further studies to prove the effect on academic achievement of age gap between students in the same grade. This study identified the clear difference in a component ratio in the participants and the successful candidates based on the by entrance age during the entrance examination of the "K" science education center for the gifted. Also, this study analyzed the difference in success in an examination depending on the season of birth between the participants and the successful candidates during the entrance examination. It also compared the birth ratio by season of each group including common students. Some preceding studies with common or backward students show the result that students who entered the school in full age have higher level of academic achievements than students in younger age. But the results of this study proved that gifted students who entered the school in full age did not have a high level of academic achievements. Like these studies, this study show the result that school entrance age works as an important factor of selection of gifted students. Students who entered the school in full age entered much more the "K" science education center for gifted students than students in young age.

  • This paper explores the effect of relative age at elementary school entry, which is determined by birth date and school entrance law, on college entrance. First, I compare the college entrance rate between students born in January or February and those born in other months. Second, I estimate the effect of age at school entry on college entrance. Relatively older students at school entry are likely to have better educational outcomes during the first college entrance. However, these differences in educational outcomes seem to decrease the more that younger students repeat taking the college entrance exam.

  • This study aims to analyze the impact of vocational training received by learning workers through the degree-linked work-study program on their learning outcomes. Specifically, we explore the causal relationship between various factors considered during university degree program admission and selection, and the average GPA (Grade Point Average) after admission. To achieve this, we conducted regression analysis and variance analysis using historical admission data and GPA records of 976 students from three undergraduate programs at a domestic K university that implements the degree-linked work-study model. Additionally, we included company information from publicly available databases that could potentially influence the academic performance of learning workers. Our analysis revealed significant causal relationships across various factors, including the classification of the high school attended, gender, family background, subject-specific grades in high school, duration of employment at the company, and age at the time of admission. Based on these findings, we anticipate that universities operating similar degree programs can enhance their selection procedures for learning workers. Furthermore, the results of this study can serve as foundational data for future policy recommendations related to degree-linked work-study programs.

Especially, I try to find out the foreign language policy of the Joseon Dynasty and the comparative superiority between six foreign language schools - Japanese School, English School, French School, Russian School, Chinese School, and German School - through the traits of teachers and the change of students numbers at the Regulation Period. As a part of Kabo Reforms, the government had abolished the of Civil Service Examination System and status system, and foreign languages worked as a cultural capital to acquire modern civilization and to escalate one's social status. The results were as follows: Firstly, the OFLS have to be regarded as one of the highest educational institute during the Regulation Period. The eligibility of the OFLS was over 15 years old, but most of the incoming students were over 20 years old. Secondly, many of the OFLS's teachers were specialists of military, diplomat and mechanics. Especially, Martel, the teacher of French school played an important role for the neutral diplomacy policy of the Great Korean(Dae-Han) Empire during the Regulation Period. Thirdly, the recruit of new members of the OFLS was affected by the political and social circumstances at that time. Fourthly, the statistics of incoming students during the Regulation Period was concentrated on Chinese school, French school, and English school in due order. Thus, it differed from the commonly accepted ideas of students' statistics which was concentrated on English School and Japanese School. Fifthly, the OFLS were not only for the training of official interpreters(譯官通事), but also the cultivation of civil servants who could become statesman.

  • This study is conducted to analyze the difference among college students' department satisfaction, career maturity, and career stress, and to examine the influence of department satisfaction and career maturity on career stress. A survey was done among 824 college students using the scales on department satisfaction, career maturity, and career stress and the following results were found. First of all, department satisfaction, career maturity, and career stress had statistically significant differences based on students year, age, academic records, entrance motive, peer relation, and health condition. Secondly, the subfactors of department satisfaction, namely, course satisfaction, relationship satisfaction, general satisfaction, and recognition satisfaction, showed statistically significant differences according to age, gender, academic records, entrance motive, peer relation, and health condition. Thirdly, the subfactors of career maturity, namely, determinacy, participation, independence, tendency, and compromise, had statistically significant differences according to year and age. Lastly, career maturity and department satisfaction considerably influenced career stress: when department satisfaction and career maturity were lower, career stress was higher. These results indicate that department satisfaction and career maturity correlate with career stress. Therefore, in order to decrease career stress, college students who maintain a low level of department satisfaction and career maturity should receive active guidance and education.

  • As the Korean school entry date changed in 2010, from March 1 to January 1, January-born children are older than their peers at school, and December-born children are the youngest. This implies that parents may have incentives to avoid giving birth in December, and a mother who gives birth in this month is likely to be a mother who is not very concerned with her child's education. This study finds that the mothers of December-born children are younger, have lower education level, and have a lower probability of being employed than other mothers. This means that December-born children are more disadvantaged because they are the youngest among their peers and are from families of low socioeconomic backgrounds.
