  • In this study the characteristics of piled raft was investigated by using both centrifuge and numerical modeling. The ultimate bearing capacities of single pile, unpiled raft, freestanding pile group and piled raft were compared in order to investigate load sharing of each element : pile and raft. The comparison determined parameters to simply evaluate the ultimate bearing capacity of piled raft. Centrifuge test results were simulated by numerical simulation to verify the parameters.

  • Various micropiles have been developed through research related to micropiles, which have been carried out with the increased use of micropiles. Among the micropile construction methods being developed, the triaxial micropile (tmp), which is recently developed for the purpose of increasing the horizontal bearing capacity (seismic resistance), is representative. The three-axis micropile has the advantage of a method that can resist horizontal load more effectively because three micropiles installed inclined on each axis resist horizontal load. However, there is a problem in effectively using this pile method due to insufficient research on the support characteristics of the triaxial group micropile. In order to effectively utilize the triaxial group micropile (tmp), it is required to evaluate the bearing capacity for the factors that affect the horizontal bearing capacity of the pile. Therefore, in this study, field horizontal loading Tests were performed for each load direction, field loading Tests were verified through three-dimensional finite element analysis, behavioral characteristics of triaxial micropiles were evaluated, and appropriate horizontal bearing capacity was analyzed in consideration of horizontal load directions.

  • Based on the various test data acquired in the field, the large pressure chamber and the small pressure chamber, uplift behaviors and method of determining the ultimate uplift capacity of pile driven in small pressure chamber were studied. After uplift pile experienced 2 or 3 sudden slip due to increase of uplift load, complete pullout failure was occurred. Thus, it appears that the ultimate uplift capacity could be identified as the load at displacement where first slip occurs. The ultimate uplift capacity might be determined in every test and the disturbance after first uplift test could be recovered by adding one blow of the drop hammer, which had to depend on the model pile capacity.

  • In this study, the performance of group suction anchors installed in sand and subjected to pullout loading was investigated by numerical analysis. The group suction anchors consist of two or three units rigidly connected to each other in parallel array and the pullout resistances were compared with that of a single anchor. Parametric study was performed using numerical models to study the effect of the physical conditions of the group anchor. The parameters include the skirt length to diameter ratio of a unit suction anchor, the pad-eye location, inclination of loading and the spacing between unit suction anchors. The analysis shows that the ratios of the pullout capacity of double suction anchor and triple suction anchor to that of single anchor are 1.7 and 2.4, respectively. The ratio increases with the increase in the spacing between the unit anchors. The other parameters such as the skirt length to the diameter ratio, the location of the pad-eye and the loading inclination have negligible effect on the ratio of pullout resistances of the group anchor to the single anchor.

  • The bearing capacity of the prebored pile has been studied by many researchers. However, The bearing capacity of the prebored pile has been studied by many researchers. However, comparative studies between design data and pile load test data on the load sharing ratio and the settlement were insignificant. Therefore, the design data and the static load test results were compared for the prebored open-end steel piles. In the compressive static pile load test, the load sharing ratios of the base resistance and the shaft resistance were 13%~40% and 60%~87%, respectively and the settlements were measured 2.2mm~4.7mm. In the current bearing capacity calculation formula, the base resistance was shared between 54% and 75%, and the shaft resistance was shared between 25% and 46% and the settlements were calculated about 19.8mm~23.6mm. The settlement in the current bearing capacity calculation formula was 321% to 776% (average : 445%) larger than the settlement in the result of load test. When the settlement were calculated using the load sharing ratio in the pile load tests, it was 137% to 525% larger than the test settlement, and it was as large as 204% on average. It was confirmed that an appropriate evaluation of the load sharing ratio had an important effect on the calculation of pile settlement.

  • Laboratory model test results for the ultimate bearing capacity and allowable bearing capacity at various settlement levels conducted on a strip foundation supported by geogrid-reinforced clay soil have been presented. For mobilization of the maximum possible load-carrying capacity, the optimum width and depth of the reinforcement layers, and the location of the first layer of reinforcement with respect to the bottom of the foundation have been determined.

  • The bearing capacity of drilled shaft is affected by several factors, such as shaft length, shape, surface roughness, young's modulus of geomaterials and shaft, soil strength, confining stress and so on. However, there has been no design method of drilled shaft considering all factors mentioned above. Moreover, since geomaterials are simply classified as sand, clay and rock, there was no design criterion for IGM (Intermediate Geomaterials). Therefore, the rigorous design approach of drilled shaft was not possible by classical design method. However, since these characteristics were not considered in classical theories, bearing capacity was generally different ken practical value. In this study, the bearing capacity of drilled shaft with the IGM's theory was compared with those of classical theories. The results showed that classical method showed smaller values of bearing capacity than those of field load transfer data. Moreover, the evaluated value of bearing capacity with IGM theory corresponded fairly well with those of field data.

  • In recent years, vertical extension remodeling of apartment building is considered as one of the efficient ways to broaden and enhance the utilization of existing buildings due to the rapid development of population and decrement of land resources. The reinforcement of foundation is of great importance to bearing the additional load caused by the added floors. However, because of the additional load, the carried load by the existing piles would be in excess of its allowable bearing capacity. In this study, a conceptual construction method called preloading method was presented. The preloading method applies force onto the reinforcing pile before vertical extension construction. The purpose of preloading is to transfer partial load applied on the existing piles to reinforcing piles in order to keep each pile not exceeding the allowable capacity and to mobilize resistance of reinforcing pile by developing relative settlement. The feasibility and effect of preloading method was investigated by using finite numerical method. Two simulation models, foundation reinforcement with preloading and without preloading, were developed through PLAXIS 3D program. Numerical results showed that the presented preloading method is capable of sharing partial carried load of existing pile and develops the mobilization of reinforcing pile's frictional resistance.
