  • For a marine bridge foundation construction, a large-circular-steel-pipe has been proposed for supporting vertical load and preventing water infiltration. However, a ship collision can adversely affect the structural stability. This paper presents a fundamental study on dynamic responses of the large-circular-steel-pipe by an impact load. In laboratory experiments, small-scaled steel pipe is installed in a soil tank. The soil height and water level are set to 23 cm and 25~70 cm, respectively. The upper part of the steel pipe is impacted using a hammer to simulate the ship collision. The dynamic responses are measured using accelerometers and strain gauges. Experimental results show that the strain decreases as the measured location is lowered. The higher frequency components appear in the impact load condition compared to the microtremor condition. However, the higher frequency components measured at the strain gauge located below the water level do not appear. For the accelerometer signal, the maximum frequency under the impact load is higher than that of the microtremor. The maximum frequency decreases as water level increases but it is larger than the maximum frequency of the microtremor. This study shows that strain gauge and accelerometer can be useful for evaluating the dynamic responses of large-circular-steel-pipes.

  • The IMO has adopted emission standards through Annex VI of the International Convention for the Prevention of Pollution from Ships (MARPOL) that strictly prohibit the use of bunker C oil for vessels. In this study, we have adopted the turret-moored Floating LNG-Bunkering Terminal (FLBT) which is designed to receive the LNG from LNGCs and transfer it to LNG-bunkering shuttles in side-by-side moored condition. Numerical analyses were carried out using the high-order boundary-element method for four vessels at various relative distances. Mean wave drift forces were compared in an operational sea state. A model test was performed in the ocean engineering basin at the Korea Research Institute of Ships & Ocean Engineering (KRISO) to verify the safety of the berthing/unberthing operation. In the model test, a jig was designed to simulate tug boats pushing or pulling the bunkering vessels, so that the friction force of the g operation was not affected. Safety depended on the environmental direction, with more stable operation possible if the heading-control function of FLBT is applied to avoid beam-sea conditions.

  • In this study, an artificial neural network (ANN)-based damage detection algorithm using acceleration signals is developed for real-time alarming locations of damage in beam-type structures. A new ANN-algorithm using output-only acceleration responses is designed tot damage detection in real time. The cross-covariance of two acceleration-signals measured at two different locations is selected as the feature representing the structural condition. Neural networks are trained lot potential loading Patterns and damage scenarios of the target structure for which its actual loadings are unknown. The feasibility and practicality of the proposed method are evaluated from laboratory-model tests on free-free beams for which accelerations were measured before and after several damage cases.

  • In the case of excavating ground backfilled with soft ground, ground destruction occurs owing to the discharge of groundwater from excavated back ground in spite of earth retaining wall. To minimize this, indoor model test was implemented applying stabilizing pile as a solution for ground destruction. The unreinforced case was compared with the reinforced case and the comparison demonstrated that the ratio of the gap in settlement of the two cases is about three to one, which proves the reinforcement effect (Kim, 2014). This study has carried out the evaluation of appropriate pile spacing ratio, according to the confirmed effect of stabilizing pile. In the evaluation test the case with pile spacing ratio of 0.66 (5 stabilizing piles) was compared with that of 0.76 (3 stabilizing piles), and it has been shown that applying stabilizing pile has effect on ground destruction reduction, but may rather work as load when pile spacing ratio is narrower than a certain interval. So it was found that adjustment for appropriate pile spacing ratio is required at the stage of design. This study has shown that the pile spacing ratio is appropriate at around 0.7~0.8, which reduces ground destruction and does not function as the load of excavated back ground.

  • A new mode synthesis method using Lagrange multipliers and substructure hybrid interface modes is presented. Substruture governing equations of motion are derived using Lagrange equations and the constraints of geometric compatibility between the substructures are treated with Lagrange multipliers. Fixed, free, and loaded interface modes can be employed for the modal bases of each substructure. In cases of the fixed and loaded interface modes, two successive modal transformation relations are used. Compared with the conventional mode synthesis methods, the suggested method does not construct the equations of motion of the coupled structure and the final characteristic equation becomes a polynomial. Only modal parameters of each substructure and geometric compatibility conditions are needed. The suggested method is applied to a simple lumped mass model and parametric study is performed.

  • The purpose of this study is to investigate seismic performance of a bearing wall system for apartment buildings. An 1/3 scale three-story specimen was constructed and tested under cyclic lateral loads. The specimen was consisted of pierced walls and coupling elements as well as floor slabs. The bearing wall system is considered to have a adequate deformation capacity up to $2.0\%$ of roof drift ratio, and the experimental results showed the ductile load-deformation characteristics even though some walls were failed in shear Nonlinear analysis was peformed to compare the load-deformation curve obtained from the experimental program. The result of nonlinear analysis could be useful to predict the actual behavior characteristics of the bearing wall system subjected to lateral loads.

  • SUPER concrete poontoon is developed to overcome shortcomings about corrosion problem of steel pontoon and the insufficient freeboard line of concrete pontoon. Top slab of Pontoon resists truck load or sidewalk live load. The soffit slab and outer wall of Pontoon resist the horizontal and vertical components of wave pressure, and those were loaded along X and Y-axis of Pontoon. Global analysis for the Pontoon is carried out to design its cross-sections economically using a geometric non-linear time history analysis method by Strand7 and buoyance-stability calculated automatically on non-vertical boundary conditions. And the load-capacity of Pontoon is confirmed through mock-up tests.

  • A one-dimensional site response analysis program (KODSAP) was developed using cyclic soil behavior model by using the modified parallel IWAN model. The model is able to predict the cyclic hardening and degradation of soil through the adjustment of the internal slip stresses of its elements beyond the cyclic threshold, and satisfies Bauschinger's effect and the Masing rule in terms of its own behavior characteristics. The program (KODSAP) used the direct integration method in the time domain. The elasticity of the base rock was considered as a viscous damper boundary condition. The effects of cyclic hardening or degradation of soil on site response analysis were evaluated through parametric studies. Three types of analyses were performed to compare the effect of analysis and cyclic parameter on site response. The first type was equivalent linear analysis, the second was nonlinear analysis, and a third was nonlinear analysis using the cyclic hardening or degradation model.

  • A new non-destructive fatigue prediction model of the composite laminates is developed. The natural frequencies of fatigue-damaged laminates under extensional loading are related to the fatigue life of the laminates by establishing the equivalent flexural stiffness reduction as a function of the elastic properties of sublaminates. The flexural stiffness is derived by relating the 90-ply elastic modulus reduction, and using the laminate plate theory to the degraded elastic modulus and the intact elastic modulus of other laminates. The natural frequency reduction model, in which the dominant fatigue mode can be identified from the sensitivity scale factors of sublaminate elastic properties, provides natural frequency vs. fatigue cycle curves for the composite laminates. Vibration tests were also conducted on $[{90}_2/0_2]_s$ carbon/epoxy laminates to verify the natural frequency reduction model. Correlations between the predictions of the model and experimental results are good.

  • This study was conducted to provide reference data for designing an alarm system that can help prevent the overturning of a container crane under wind load. Two methods, namely, fluid-structure interaction (FSI) analysis and windtunnel test, were adopted in this investigation. To evaluate the effect of wind load on the stability of the crane, a 50-ton-class container crane that is widely used in container terminals was adopted as the analysis model and 19 values were considered as design parameters for wind direction. First, the wind-tunnel test for the reduced-scale container crane model was performed according to the wind direction by using an Eiffel type atmospheric boundary-layer wind tunnel. Next, the FSI analysis for the real-scale container crane was conducted using ANSYS and CFX. Then, the uplift force determined from the FSI analysis was compared with that determined from the wind-tunnel test. Finally, a formula to compensate for the difference between the results of the FSI analysis and the wind-tunnel test was proposed.
