  • Maruca vitrata is a main insect pest against crops of Vigna species (V. angularis and V. radiata) and Sesbania sesban in Fabaceae, but the life cycle of the insect is unclear in Korea. In order to know over-wintering possibility, its stage of the insect, over-wintering entry season, and the first adult emergence season of the next year, we investigated over-wintering rates of the insect in outdoor conditions in Suwon ($37^{\circ}16^{\prime}N$ $126^{\circ}59^{\prime}E$ 35ASL). In all colonies which the rearing for larvae, pupae and eggs started after mid-September, adults did not emerge within the year, and all insects died before next June. In several trials for over-wintering of larvae and pupae in soil, all insects died, too. Larvae stored during specified periods at low temperatures (10 and $13^{\circ}C$) did not emerge. From the results, it was postulated that M. vitrata does not have an adaptability to temperature below zero, and cannot over-winter in Suwon area.

  • Control effects of carbofuran soil incorporation just before transplanting on the early occur-ring rice insect pests were studied in the rice field. Also, its residual effects on the brown planthopper (BPH) were studied by pot experiments. Carbofurn soil incorporation in late May was much more effective in controlling the early occurring rice insect pests such as small brown planthopper, green leafhopper and rice stem borer than carbofuran broadcasting or diazinon (3G) + BPMC (50% EC) treatment in mid June. Residual effects of carbofuran soil incorportaion on the female adult BPH decreased ca. a half one month after treatment. However, its residual effects on the next generation of the BPH lasted much longer; control effects on the next generation were above 90 and 70% on 37 and 46 days after treatment, respectively. From these results, it is thought that carbofuran soil incorporation just before rice transplanting can be a good control method to the early occurring rice insect pests and the brown planthopper immigrating during June. Also, it can suppress immigrating BPH popula¬tion moderately in early July.

  • The developmental process of Paracolopha morrisoni's galls on Zelkova serrata until the emergence of alatae from the galls was studied at Chonju, Korea. The galls were formed from late April to early May, 1997 and the galls began to open in early June. The length and width of galls and leaves were measured during the period from gall formation to opening. The length and width of galls have been increased until mid May continuously. The galls stopped growing at 12th of May. Fundatrices (the first generation in the gall) began to larviposit from May 15th and the second generation developed in late May. The alatae of the second generation arrived at the final stadium, that was escaped from the gall, in early June. Thus, there were only 2 generations in the gall. The close correlationship between gall growth and leaf growth suggests that leaf growth force may have a great influence on gall development.

  • Congenital aglossia is a very rare condition. The oral manifestations of an aglossia include micrognathia, high arched or cleft palate, defects of the lower lip, an absence of lateral incisors and a mandibular growth deficiency. Although the etiology of congenital aglossia is unclear, both genetic and teratogenic mechanisms have been proposed. Treatment of aglossia patients depends on the nature and severity of the condition which includes surgical rehabilitation of the tongue tip to some extent, orthopedic expansion of the mandible to guide mandibular growth, and mandibular expansion by a distraction osteogenesis. In the present case, a 6 year old female aglossia patient with situs inversus was treated. A bonded hyrax screw was used to increase her mandibular primary intercanine width and intermolar width. A second phase orthodontic and surgical treatment will be possible after some retention phase.

  • Present experiment has been carried out in order to make clear the abnormalities of the female gametophyte formation and its relation to fertility, using the short-style of F. koreana, the results of which are summarized as follows : (1) Anatropous ovule has single integument with thick cell-layer and tiny nucellus consisting of nucella-epidermis and megaspore mother cell. (2) Meiotic division of megaspore mother cell takes place around middle or latter part of March, while that of microspore mother cell occurs from the end of September to the beginning of October. (3) Megaspore mother cell stage is long, and ranges from October to March next year. (4) Formation of mature embryo sac is not completed until the beginning of May, approximately one month after blooming. (5) Normal embryo sac is rare, most of the nucellus being devoid of embryo sac.

  • Daily rainfall data from 14 stations during 1941 to 2000 were analyzed in order to examine the characteristics of the variation of summer rainfall and the identify relationship between the variation of summer rainfall and the variation of SOI(Southern Oscillation Index) and NPI(North Pacific Index), global temperature. For further investigation, study period is divided into two 30 year intervals, 1941-1970 and 1971-2000. There are the trend of increase in August and decrease in September in the later period compared with the earlier one. It was Mid-west in August where there is the largest variation. It is related to the increase of the frequency of heavy rainfall. The second period of extreme rainfall by ten days is absent, or it change from early in September to late in August. According to the result, the dry spell in August disappears and Changma is continued to early in September. Gradually, there is change from negative (or positive) to positive (or negative) to the rainfall anomaly of the mid of August and the mid of September (or July). The correlation between the variation of rainfall and oceanic variation and global temperature is statistically significant.

  • Imago's flight activities of Protaetia brevitarsis were from mid June to early September, and those of Allomyrina dichotoma were from mid June to late August. These activities were mainly influenced by amount and duration of rain. They were more active when there was small amount and short period of rain in a year. Distribution depth of the 3$^{rd}$ larvae of P. brevitarsis were not affected to the temperature. But A. dichotoma were sensitively react to the temperature, almost larvae were near the surface when high temperature. The distribution of P. brevitarsis was not affected by humidity, but most of A. dichotoma were near the surface when high humidity. Larvae of P. brevitarsis usually ate their dead individuals. When we supplied as food the pork, chicken, fresh mackerel, bread, apple, and pear. They took all of these food but larvae of A. dichotoma took only bread. Two species were lived in similar environment but those feeding habit was very different.

  • The seasonal movements of Holotrichia morosa and H. diomphalia in soil were investigated during the period from 1984 to 1986 in Suwon. Most cf the eggs, active larvae and adults of the two species could be found at the soil depth of I-IDem. The larvae began downward movement in late October and early November in order for overwintering when soil tempe¬rature at 5cm below ground reached about $10^{\circ}C$. The overwintering depths of the larvae were 10-40cm for H. morosa and 30-80cm for H. diomPhalia. After the overwintering, pupation and adult emergence of H. morosa occurred at the overwintered sites, \vhereas H. diomPhalia larvae returned to near soil surface next April, and resumed feeding. H.diomphalia larvae began to move downward again in late June for pupation and adult emergence, and overwintered thereafter as adults at the depth of 1O-40cm.

  • The pollinating activity of bumblebee, Bombus ignitus was investigated at the blossom of Peach [Prunus persica (L.) Batsch] planted in vinyl house. The major time of foraging activity by B. ignitus was between 08:00 and 7:00, and the peak time of pollinating activity by B. ignitus was 11 :00 in the peach vinyl house from February 28 to March 5 in 2002. The rate of fruit set and the rate of marketable fruit by foraging activity of B. ignitus were much better than artificial pollination, and the effect of labor reduction by the pollinating activities of B. ignitus released against th ε artificial pollination was took remarkable profits over 93%. Therefore, the foraging activity of B. ignitus in peach vinyl house brought satisfactory results among the rate of fruit set, the rate of marketable fruit and the effect of labor reduction against the artificial pollination.

  • Occurrence of Liriomyza trifolii and its biological control efficacy using Neochrysocharis formosa were evaluated in two eggplant cropping systems of spring and autumn cultivation. L. trifolii adults began to be attracted on a yellow sticky traps from late April and they increased from early June. A high density of L. trifolii adults was maintained from middle June to middle July. The releases of two N. formosa per plant with 3 times as weekly intervals from May 25, 2004 for spring culture resulted control effect of 90.1% in parasitism to L. trifolii in late July. The releases of two N. formosa per plant with 4 times as weekly intervals from August 31, 2004 for autumn culture resulted control effect of 81.3% in population of L. trifolii with 64.4-69.9% in parasitism.
