  • There have been many instances of damage to buildings with soft stories, and it is important to consider vertically irregular buildings when evaluating the seismic performance of existing buildings. However, because conventional methods do not easily reflect vertical irregularities with sufficient accuracy, it is possible to underestimate or overestimate the seismic performance of buildings with vertical irregularities. This study aims to develop a seismic performance evaluation method for vertically irregular buildings using the stiffness-based soft story ratio (SSR), which is a parameter that represents the ratio of the demand and the capacity for displacement and refers to the ratio of displacement concentration in buildings. The seismic performance evaluation method developed in this study is compared with the conventional seismic performance evaluation method for four piloti buildings, using the first-floor column as a variable. Conventional seismic performance evaluation methods often overestimate the seismic performance for models in which vertical irregularities are maximized. However, results of the proposed seismic performance evaluation method are identical to those from a detailed evaluation for all models. Therefore, it is considered that the proposed seismic performance evaluation method can provide more precise seismic performance evaluation results than conventional methods in the case of piloti buildings, where vertical irregularities are maximized.

  • This study proposed a BCM(Binding Column Method) that can reinforce the insufficient seismic force of piloti buildings that are not designed for seismic resistance. In addition, 4 reinforcement specimens and 1 reference specimen were manufactured for the proposed seismic reinforcement method. The effect of improving seismic performance before and after reinforcement was examined through repeated loading tests. As a result of experiment, seismic reinforcement specimen with BCM system showed hysteretic characteristics of a large ellipse with great energy dissipation ability and increased strength and stiffness, while reference specimen showed rapid reduction in strength and brittle shear failure column. In addition, it can be seen that the reinforcing effect is improved as the gap is narrow, the torque is large, and the thickness of the L-shaped steel sheet is thicker. The SC4 specimen showed the best seismic performance reinforcement effect.

  • The fire at the pilotis parking lot shows the fire propagation paths that are propagated to the ceiling materials and insulation materials and propagated through the external walls. In addition, there is a high risk of fire caused by vehicles with high combustion loads spreading throughout the parking lot. In particular, the omission of the ceiling materials at the parking lot in recent fire cases has contributed to the spread of the fire. In this study, the combustion performance of the ceiling materials between the insulation material and the vehicle is considered to prevent fire from spreading. Based on field research, the type of ceiling material used in the piloti structure showed that SMC ceiling materials have the highest percentage. Combustion performance test (KS F ISO 5660-1) was carried out on the SMC ceiling materials and the AL ceiling materials to review the fire safety of the ceiling finish based on the field investigation. The results of the test showed that the SMC ceiling materials has a THR 28.973[MJ/㎡] and peek HRR 273.93 [kW/㎡], while the AL ceiling material has a THR 0.584[MJ/㎡] and peek HRR 15.215[kW/㎡].

  • It became clear that Korean peninsula is not a safe region anymore from an earthquake disaster after Gyeongju and Pohang Earthquake in 2016-2017. Unfortunately, building industry in Korea has not been well prepared for an earthquake disaster and the following problems exist. First, the rate of buildings with proper seismic performance is relatively low. Second, the number of piloti buildings which are vulnerable to earthquake and fire disaster has increased recently. Third, the proportion of small-scale buildings excluded from the application of the building law for securing safety is too high. Fourth, widespread corruption and poor construction impede safety. Therefore, measures to prepare for earthquake disaster are as follows. First, methods of reinforcing building structures and reducing the seismic load acting on a building should be utilized in order to secure the insufficient seismic performance of buildings vulnerable to earthquakes. Second, whistleblowers should be encouraged and protected to prevent defective construction due to corruption. To this end, whistleblowers should be recognized as an effective means of protecting public interest not the traitor to the organization.

  • On November 15, 2017, an earthquake($M_L5.4$) occurred in Pohang. Pohang earthquake was the second largest earthquake since earthquake was observed in Korea, but structural damage caused by earthquake was biggest. Structural damage caused by Pohang earthquake was mainly caused by schools and pilotis, above all damage to pilotis was outstanding. This is because area where pilotis structures are concentrated is located near epicenter, and seismic performance of pilotis structures is not excellent compared with general structures. In this study, described results of damage investigation and analysis of damage causes through analysis of pilotis Structures on 131 buildings that were investigated immediately after Pohang earthquake. In addition, cause of damage was analyzed through analysis of seismic wave. Investigation site was selected to Jangseong-dong, where damage occurred in large numbers. Damage level was classified into A, B, and C level by measuring residual crack width and story drift of structural members.

  • Recently, many apartment buildings in the shear wall system often has pilotis in the lower story to meet the architectural needs. If the lateral force resisting system consists of shear walls supported by columns and beams. the discontinuity at the lowest level with pilotis results in the vertical irregularity with strength and stiffness. So, there are needs to be considered tile analysis and design about column and beam bellow shear walls and the behavior and stress condition of structure by stiffness change being generated at shear walls. The purpose of this paper is to investigate the behavior of shear wall structures with pilotis using the floors modeled as rigid diaphragm or semi rigid diaphragm. Through analyses, after estimating values of the story drift, natural period, stress condition of shear walls and the forces of column, we inferred how the behavior of shear wall structures with pilotis was influenced by the floor stiffness.

  • The experiment was carried out to investigate lateral retrofitting effects by FRP and BRB (Buckling-Restrained Brace) for beam-column elements. These results were utilized to establish an analytical model using commercial nonlinear analysis software, PERFORM3D. Concrete and steel analytical models previously proposed by several scholars were adopted for this analytical study. A proposed analysis model showed reasonable accuracy compared with the test results on the beam-column elements strengthened FRP sheets and BRB, as well as with the non-strengthened element subjected to lateral cyclic loadings. Subsequently, the proposed modeling technique for nonlinear analysis would be helpful for preliminary analyses for retrofitting structures, by enabling engineers to estimate the improved capacity of retrofitted structural elements before performing construction.

  • Many of residential buildings, which have pilotis in lower stories to meet the architectural needs, are recently constructed in Korea. Usually, infill walls located in the upper stories of these buildings may cause a soft first story, which is very weak from the earthquake resistance. In the design of the buildings, the infill walls of upper stories are usually considered as non-structural elements and thus they are not included in the analytical model. However, the infill walls may affect the seismic behavior of the residential buildings. Therefore, the differences in seismic behaviors of RC buildings with and without masonry infill walls are required to be investigated. In this study, seismic fragility analyses were performed for masonry infilled low-rise RC moment-resisting frames. And seismic behaviors of RC moment-resisting frame with/without masonry infill walls were evaluated. Two types of structural system with the same frame and different allocation of infill walls are used to evaluate the influence of masonry infill walls on seismic behavior of RC moment-resisting frames. The infill walls were modeled as bi-equivalent diagonal struts. The fragility analyses show that the seismic performance of RC moment-resisting frames with soft story is below the desirable building seismic performance level recommended by current seismic codes, indicating high vulnerability of RC moment-resisting frames with soft story.

  • This study was conducted to examine experimentally the seismic performance of non-ductile reinforced concrete (RC) frames retrofitted with precast(PC) engineered cementitious composite (ECC) wall panels. The seismic performance was investigated through cyclic load tests on RC frame with different aspect ratio (hw/lw = 2 and 3) and installation position (center and both side of RC frame) of the PC ECC wall panels. Test results indicated that the seismic strengthening method using PC ECC wall panels is effective to improve significantly the strength, stiffness and energy dissipation capacity of non-ductile RC frame. Based on test results, it can be recommended to install PC ECC wall panel at the center of RC frame for improving the strength and to install slender wall panels at both side of RC frame for increasing ductility.

  • The objective of this study is to evaluate the seismic performance of the low-rise RC apartment buildings having piloties at ground level by using nonlinear static analysis with regards to the maximum considered and design earthquakes in Korea. To do this, the target displacement at roof was estimated according to FEMA356 (or ASCE/SEI-41), and the deformations of the critical members were compared with the failure criteria of Life Safety(LS) and Collapse Prevention(CP) given in FEMA356. The conclusions are as follows: (1) columns satisfy criteria of LS and CP, but (2) the shear wall in the longitudinal direction failed to satisfy those of both LS and CP while those in the transverse direction satisfy that of LS, but failed that of CP.
