  • Forest covers 30% of the Earth's land area and plays an important role in global carbon flux through its ability to store much greater amounts of carbon than other terrestrial ecosystems. The Gross Primary Production (GPP) represents the productivity of forest ecosystems according to climate change and its effect on the phenology, health, and carbon cycle. In this study, we estimated the daily GPP for a forest ecosystem using remote-sensed data from Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) and machine learning algorithms Support Vector Machine (SVM). MODIS products were employed to train the SVM model from 75% to 80% data of the total study period and validated using eddy covariance measurement (EC) data at the six flux tower sites. We also compare the GPP derived from EC and MODIS (MYD17). The MODIS products made use of two data sets: one for Processed MODIS that included calculated by combined products (e.g., Vapor Pressure Deficit), another one for Unprocessed MODIS that used MODIS products without any combined calculation. Statistical analyses, including Pearson correlation coefficient (R), mean squared error (MSE), and root mean square error (RMSE) were used to evaluate the outcomes of the model. In general, the SVM model trained by the Unprocessed MODIS (R = 0.77 - 0.94, p < 0.001) derived from the multi-sites outperformed those trained at a single-site (R = 0.75 - 0.95, p < 0.001). These results show better performance trained by the data including various events and suggest the possibility of using remote-sensed data without complex processes to estimate GPP such as non-stationary ecological processes.

  • We have carried out highway traffic noise prediction and measurement for 10 sites with representative road shapes and structures. A road traffic noise prediction model(NIER('99)) has been developed for environmental impact assessment in Korea. With the fitted regression analysis, the distribution ratio($R^2$) and Pearson correction coefficient(r) was 92.4% and 0.96 in $1^{st}$ floor, 38.7% and 0.66 in $3^{rd}$ floor, 42% and 0.65 in $5^{th}$ floor, 7.5% and 0.27 in $7^{th}$ floor, 28.4% and 0.53 in 10th floor, 35.6% and 0.60 in $13^{th}$ floor, 52.7% and 0.73 in $15^{th}$ floor, respectively. The measured values of the noise level except the 1st floor did not show a good agreement with the predicted noise level in the NIER('99) formula. Also, the NIER('99) formula demonstrated that the measured values weren't reasonably close to the predicted values, indicating the validity and adequacy of the predicted models with the fitted vs residual analysis in the 95% of confidence interval and 95% of predict interval. Using the equal variation on the basis of the residual vs fitted value, there was the significant difference for variation between $3^{rd}$ floor and $15^{th}$ floor except $1^{st}$ floor. The results suggested that the NIER('99) model obtained by the results according to the apartment floor must be improved and developed on the road traffic noise.

  • The purpose of this study was to assess the intra-rater, inter-rater and test-retest reliability and validity of frontal plane lower extremity alignment estimated from a rasterstereographic method using ABW-Mapper. Eighteen subjects participated in this study. The S angle (stereographic angle-frontal plane lower extremity alignment estimated from a rasterstereographic method) in standing was measured throughout the two sessions with one week interval by two different readers. In the first session, a reader measured S angle twice per subject with a short break in-between. The Q-angle (quadriceps angle) was measured using a standard goniometer from a photography taken through digital camera with the participant standing in the same position as in the S angle measurement. The HKA(hip-knee-ankle) angle was measured from a computer based digital radiograph with the computerized measurement software. Reliability was tested using intraclass correlation coefficients(ICC). Validity was tested using a Pearson's correlation coefficient. Excellent intra-rater(ICC=0.956~0.974), inter-rater(ICC=0.962), test-retest reliability (ICC=0.945) were demonstrated. There were strong negative correlations between S angle and Q-angle (r=-0.739), and between S angle and HKA angle (r=-0.702). Therefore, the S angle measured using a rasterstereographic mapper may be used to as a preliminary or supplementary tool to evaluate and study LE alignment in the frontal plane in relation to HKA angle or Q-angle.

  • This study investigates the correlations between the total prostate volume (TPV), using the prostate specific antigen (PSA) and prostate specific antigen density (PSAD) as the blood test results and transrectal ultrasound (TRUS), and the prostate transition zone volume (PTZV), as well as variables such as age; the findings can be used as clinical indicators. A retrospective analysis was conducted on 68 healthy men in their 30s who underwent TRUS and PSA and PSAD blood tests from June 2007 to April 2016, with no history of treatment in their prostate. Siemens Acuson sequoia 512 and the probe Siemens EC-10C5 Endocavitary were used as the ultrasound equipment. For statistical analysis, SPSS 18.0 was used to calculate the standard deviation and mean of each variable; Pearson's correlation analysis was also performed. The descriptive statistics of the variables were $24.27{\pm}6.60$ for TPV, $6.99{\pm}6.60$ for PTZV, $2.12{\pm}2.76$ for PSA, and $0.281{\pm}0.1$ for PSAD. The coefficients of correlations between PTZV and variables were 0.831 for PSAD, 0.707 for TPV, 0.398 for age, and 0.118 for PSA. While PSA and age were positively correlated, PSAD and TPV were highly correlated. Therefore, PTZV of men in their 30s without underlying diseases can be predicted using PSAD and TPV.

  • The purpose of this study was to investigate the relationship between neck pain and upper limb disability in patients with non-specific neck pain (n=132) recruited from physiotherapy departments in the Korea. Baseline neck pain/disability was measured using the Northwick Park Neck Pain Questionnaire (NPQ) and upper limb disability was measured using the Disabilities of Arm, Shoulder, Hand questionnaire (DASH). A range of baseline psychosocial variables were measured as potential confounding variables. Pairwise analysis revealed a positive correlation between NPQ score and DASH score (Pearsons' r=0.628, p<0.05). This study provides preliminary evidence that patients with severe neck pain/disability also report severe upper limb disability. The presence of severe neck pain or low pain self efficacy and high fear-avoidence beliefs questionnaire should clinicians towards a careful examination of upper limb function in patients presenting with neck pain. Our data suggest the upper limb disability may need to be addressed as part of the neck management process.

  • This study was attempted to confirm the effects of learning flow, academic stress, and resilience on self-efficacy in college students. This study targeted 304 university students in B and G cities. Data analysis was analyzed by descriptive statistics, t-test, ANOVA, Pearson's correlation coefficient, and multiple regression analysis using the SPSS 22.0 program. The average self-efficacy of the subjects was 3.14±0.62 points, and the difference in self-efficacy according to general characteristics was significant in gender(t=-2.533, p=.012) and satisfaction with major(F=5.687, p=.004). Self-efficacy of the subjects was positive correlation with learning flow(r=.574, p<.001), resilience(r=.525, p<.001), and negative correlation with academic stress(r=-.262, p<.001). Resilience of the subjects showed positive correlation with learning flow(r=.325, p<.001) and negative correlation with academic stress(r=-.291, p<.001). Learning flow showed negative correlation with academic stress(r=-.211, p<.001). Factors influencing the self-efficacy of the subjects were identified as academic commitment (β=.442, p<.001) and resilience (β=.363, p<.001) and the explanatory power was 45.6%. Therefore, in order to improve college students' self-efficacy, it is necessary to develop and apply education and programs that can improve learning flow and resilience.

  • An investigation of grain size, organic compounds and metal distribution in 23 sediment samples of the Geum-River basin (Korea) was conducted in two seasons of 2012 (dry season and rainy season). The samples of sediment were collected from the basin and investigated for concentrations of some metal and general indexes containing grain size. Concentrations of Pb, Zn, Cu, Cr, Ni, As, Cd, Hg, Al and Li have been determined by inductively coupled plasma spectrometer (ICP) and the sediments organic matter content was determined by the loss on ignition, and sediments were fractionated with three different nylon sieves. Correlation analysis was made for grain size, organic material and metal concentrations, and the Pearson correlation coefficients between their concentrations were determined. As a result, the higher metal concentrations were found in the period of the dry season than in another season. The metal concentrations showed high correlation with that of organic material (COD and TOC). Thereby, the high distribution of metal concentrations in sediment containing high organic compound is suggesting an interaction with organic matter.

  • The internal erosion due to poor compaction of the material was the main cause of collapse of the embankment in Korea. The assessment of the compaction state of the dam body was a very important check in the safety diagnosis of the embankment. In this study, the correlation between dynamic cone penetration test and plate loading test which is the most typical compaction evaluation technique was analyzed to verify the applicability of the dynamic cone penetration test in evaluating the compaction state of the dam body. The standard penetration tests were carried out six times to define soil properties and depth of the test site. The spatial distributions were obtained by the Kriging method after 15 times of plate loading tests and 47 times of dynamic cone penetration tests. The Pearson correlation coefficient between the spatial distribution of the plate loading test and the dynamic cone penetration test spatial distribution at the constant penetration depth was calculated. The load distribution in the plate loading test and the blow counts at penetration depths of 5 cm, 10 cm and 15 cm in the dynamic cone penetration test showed a weak positive correlation.

  • The purpose of this study was to identify relationships between metacogintion, problem solving process, and debriefing experience in S-PBL. Study participants were 102 nursing students who took the integrated S-PBL class in their last semester. Data were collected using a self-reported questionnaire and analyzed into descriptive statistics, t-test, ANOVA, Pearson's correlation coefficient, and multiple regression. The highest subscale of debriefing experience was 'appropriate facilitator guidance' 3.78 (out of 5). Problem solving process and metacognition were positively correlated (r=0.704, p<.001). Metacognition was positively correlated with debriefing experience(r=0.197, p<.05), especially area of 'learning and making connections'(r=0.235, p<.05) whereas, there was no significant correlation between problem solving process and debriefing experience. Multiple regression (enter method) showed that gender and metacognition explained 51.2% of problem solving process. This study offers a rationale on simulation debriefing and further studies are needed to support effects of experiences of debriefing and factors on problem solving process and debriefing in nursing simulation.
