  • The objective of this study was to analyze time-dependent changes in bite marks on pig skin. Bite marks produced by the average bite force of adults were analyzed three-dimensionally for 3 hours directly after its formation, at 1-hour intervals. The measured values were calculated by root mean square (RMS) and statistically analyzed by one-way ANOVA test (α = 0.05). The average bite sizes were 0.899 mm, 0.717 mm and 0.506 mm at the first, second and third intervals, respectively, and were significantly different between the three intervals (P < 0.05). A bite mark showed time-dependent changes in the compression level, showing the greatest change in the first interval. Changes in bite marks decreased over time, and bite marks were observed most prominently generated by the anterior dentition.

  • During the winter, the rice field-dwelling muddy loach Misgurnus mizolepis is buried in burrows constructed of mud and are subjected to exposure to air at times of shortage of water. To investigate the environmental factors that lead to changes of the skin mucus cells of the muddy loach in rice fields, we carried out an experiment where we artificially exposure the fish to air, duplicating as close as possible winter conditions in nature. During the summer, a water tank containing M. mizolepis was filled with mud, and the water was allowed to evaporate. After a month of evaporation, the loach constructed burrows similar to those in a winter rice field. The epidermis in the experimental fish was mostly occupied by large elongated mucus cells, whose numbers drastically increased in all observed regions of the dorsum, lateral region, and the occiput. Such features are typically seen in fishes in wild habitats during the winter season.

  • The histological morphology on the skin of Misgurnus anguillicaudatus was described in the three regions such as dorsal, lateral, occiput and subsequently morphological variations of the skin were monthly observed for a year. The skin consisted of epidermis having epithelial cell, club cell and mucus cell, and dermis of mainly connective tissue fiber, embedded scale and blood capillary. Unicellular mucus cells situated at the epidermis underwent seasonal change in its size, as well as number and amounts of mucus-secreting materials, which they greatly increased in winter, but did not in summer. As it is getting cold, the mucus cells' shape changed from initial spherical to oval or elongated form. Such considerable changes in the mucus cell were particularly most evident in the occiput during winter. Moreover, the dermis largely thickened about 2~3 times in winter than in summer. Based on these results, we discussed function for the mucus on what it mainly acts in nature and information on whether mucus cells' seasonal variations affect on hibernation and cutaneous respiration.

  • Non-invasive technologies in skin research have enabled to use a live image of living skin without a biopsy or histologic processing of tissue. Confocal scanning laser microscope (CSLM) operated at a near-infrared wavelength of 830 nm allows visualization of inner structure of skin as a non-invasive manner. According to previous researches using CSLM, melanin cap and papillary ring were clearly observed in pigmented areas between stratum basale and papillary dermis. In this study, conversional analysis of CSLM digital images into numerical estimation using scanning probe image processor (SPIP) software was attempted for the first time. It is concluded that a quantification of CSLM images can pave way to expand the field of applications of CSLM.

  • Today, modern people perceive skin care as part of their physical health care, and acne is a common skin disease problem that is found on the face. In this paper, an effective acne detection algorithm using CIE $L^*a^*b^*$ color space has been proposed. It is red when the pixel value of the component image $a^*$ is a positive number, so it is suitable for detecting acne in skin image. First, the skin image based on the RGB color space is subjected to light compensation through color balancing, and converted into a CIE $L^*a^*b^*$ color space. The extracted component image $a^*$ was normalized, and then the skin and acne area were estimated with the threshold values. Experimental results show that the proposed method detects acne more effectively than the conventional method based on brightness information, and the proposed method is robust against the reflected light source.

  • Recently, interests in mask-type skin care devices using light-emitting diodes have been increasing and optical stimuli at certain wavelengths have been known to have various therapeutic effects, such as skin whitening, acne treatment, elasticity and wrinkle improvement by controlling the exposure to wavelengths of light and irradiation time. In particular, light sources of different wavelengths are applied in masks for the purpose of suppressing skin aging, inducing cell proliferation, and alleviating skin inflammation. In this paper, we developed a light-emitting diode control system that is actively used in skin regeneration masks using a microcontroller. Optical stimuli with different manners were applied to skin fibroblast cells in a single or complex wavelengths, and then confirmed how they are effective in the cell differentiation. In addition, we found a specific wavelength that has a positive effect on cell proliferation rates, and confirm the effectiveness of cell proliferation by image processing based quantitative analysis.

  • In this study, exosomal-like nano-vesicles derived from probiotics were isolated and various physiological activities were evaluated on the skin. This study show that Lactococcus lactis subsp. lactis (LL) are incubated, and then isolated LL derived exosomal nanovesicles (LVs) at the range of 70 ~ 200 nm by high-pressure homogenizer and ultrafiltration. The vesicle numbers were an average of 1.81 × 1011 particles/mL. This study finds out the bacterial nanovesicles' beneficial effect on the skin. Fibrillin (FBN1) gene expression increased by 23% in fibroblast cells. Fibronectin (FN1) and filaggrin (FLG) gene expression increased by 65% and 400% in keratinocytes. We could see that cornified envelope (CE) formation ability was increased by 30% compared to the control group. Furthermore, collagen type I alpha 1 (COL1A1) protein expression increased by 83% compared to the UV-irradiated control group. These results suggest that LVs could help skin barrier improvement and used as an ingredient for cosmetics or pharmaceuticals.
