The effects of Acanthopanacis cortex water extract on allergic contact dermatitis (ACD) in Sprague-Dawley male rats treated with 2.5% 1-chloro-2,4-dinitrochlorobenzene (DNCB) on the dorsal skin were evaluated. The concentration of TBARS in plasma and liver was increased in ACD rats and was significantly decreased in Acanthopanacis cortex fed group (ACFG) compared to CG (control group). Serum Ig E level was significantly increased in CG compared to normal group, while that of ACFG was significantly decreased. The epidermal thickness of CG was significantly increased compared to that of normal group, while that of ACFG was significantly decreased compared to that of CG These results indicated that the Acanthopanacis cortex water extract administration improved lipid preoxidation, antioxidative activity, serum Ig E level and epidermal thickness in rats with ACD.
Preharvest treatment with 4% ethyl oleate on 'Merlot' ($Vitis$$vinifera$ L.) grape reduced the thickness of the epidermal and hypodermal layers with significantly enhanced pigmentation. Thickness of the skin in treated berries was $90-107{\mu}m$, whereas those in control berries were $126-189{\mu}m$. Decreases in the thickness of epidermal and hypodermal cell layers seemed to be due to cellular death or dehydration by rapid senescence after the treatment. Immediate change observed in treated berries was the deformation of the wax that appeared melted resulting in color improvement. Total anthocyanin was also increased by ethyl oleate treatment. Separate forms of anthocyanins, acylated and methoxylated anthocyanins increased, whereas hydroxylated anthocyanins tended to decrease.

After allergic contact dermatitis (ACD) elicited by application of 1 mL of 2.5% 1-chloro-2,4-dinitrochloro-benzene (DNCB) onto dorsal skin, Sprague Dawley male rats fed Scutellaria baicalensis water extract were observed to investigate the mitigative effect of Scutellaria baicalensis water extract on ACD. The Scutellaria baicalensis water extract (100 mg/kg/day) was daily administered to rats suffered from ACD. Concentrations of TBARS in plasma and liver were increased in rats with ACD. The concentrations of TBARS in liver were significantly decreased in Scutellaria baicalensis-fed group (SBFG) compared to control group (CG), but not in plasma. Liver SOD activity was significantly increased in SBFG compared to that of normal group and CG. Serum Ig E level was significantly increased in CG compared to normal group, while that of SBFG was significantly decreased. The epidermal thickness of CG was significantly increased compared to that of normal group, while that of SBFG was significantly decreased compared to that of CG. These results indicated that the Scutellaria baicalensis water extract administration was effective for antioxidative activity in liver, serum Ig E level and epidermal thickness of rats with ACD.
A numerical simulation program based on the finite elerrent method is developed for calculating electromagnetic field of the cylindrical electromagnetic pump. The calculated results by the developed program show that Lorentz forces show maximum peak at an optimum length ($L_c$) of the induction coil. The value of $L_c$ depends on the radius of the molten metal when the skin depth is large. On the other hand, the value of $L_c$ depends on the skin depth when it is small.
The present study was performed to observe the ultrastructure of the integument of adult Paragonimus westermani. Dogs experimentally infected with 60 metacercariae of F. westermani were autopsied 4 months after the infection. Adult p. westermani were extracted from the dogs and the fine structure was studied by means of scanning and transmission electron microscope. The findings are as follows: 1. Scanning electron microscopic findings showed that the spines and the papillae are distributed at whole body surface but the well developed spines or papaillae are shown around the oral sucker and ventral sucker. 2. At the end of the body, excretory pore was found, the shape was irregular. 3. Transmission electron microscopic findings showed that plasma membrane, tegument, basal lamina, connective tissue, circular muscle layer, longitudinal muscle layer. nerve axon and tegumental cell were observed. 4. In higher magnification, plasma membrance and bar-shaped granules were found at the outer surface of the tegument.
An acephalic budding Cysticercus of 1.2 cm long was removed surgically at the abdominal wall of a Korean man. The worm revealed abnormal buds on the bladder wall and absence of suckers and hooklets in the scolex body. The buds were of two histologic types; branching bud covered with normal tegumentum and with subtegumental cells of normal density, and buds of proliferated subtegumental cells with lacunae formation. On the bases of the morphologic features, it was identified as a racemose cysticercus. This case confirms that its extracranial location is possible.
Histological observations on the barbels of catfish (Siluridae) in Korea are reported. The mandibular barbel of Far Eastern catfish, Silurus asotus, has epidermis and dermis surrounding an axial rod of cartilage. The stratified epidermis embodies mucous cells, club cells, and taste buds. The mucous cells, which are thin rims of basophilic cytoplasm, and the taste buds, which are basophilic, are located at the surface and the distal portion of the epidermis, respectively. The basement membrane lies between the epidermis and dermis except in places of dermal papillae. The dermis is made up of loose connective tissue fibers enclosing nerve bundles and blood vessels. The central region of cartilage is innermost and enclosed within muscle layers. The mandibular barbel of slender catfish, S. microdorsalis, has an identical structure to those of the Far Eastern catfish however, the percentage thickness of epidermis in the upper and lower parts of the barbel and the number of taste buds in the upper and middle parts of the barbel are different from those of Far Eastern catfish. This study shows that the mandibular barbels in Far Eastern catfish and slender catfish are of a stiff and flexible type.
In this study, we studied the effect of dissolved cement powder on Carassius auratus by analysis of the morphophysiological changes. The gill exposed to dissolved cement powder showed the thickened primary lamellae and the activity of chloride cells and mucous cells was also significantly increased and the proliferation, separation and clubbing of gill filament was observed in the secondary lamellae. In the kidney tissue, the space in Bowman's capsule was widen and the arrangement of dermis was irregular due to the thinned epidermis in the integument tissue. The activities of antioxidant enzymes and LDH tended to increase with the duration of cement exposure. It was confirmed that the up-regulated proteins were identified as involved in glycolysis and energy metabolism and down-regulated proteins were myofibrillar proteins which were involved in muscle contraction by the cement exposure to the integument. With these results, dissolved cement powder was thought to be a big threat to the survival of the fish because it causes the morphological changes and weakens the physiological activity in C. auratus tissues.
The epidermal recovering-effects of the Cnidium officinale extract after inducing contact-dermatitis by 1-chloro-2,4-dinitrochlorobenzene (DNCB) showed by measuring thickness of skin, identifying IgE amounts in plasma, and activities of anti-oxidant enzymes using histochemical and biochemical methods. By three-time applications of the extract, morphological changes of dermatitis in impaired region were recovered dramatically and shape of skin surface and thickness of epidermis were restored to be normal. Also, lipid content was recovered to the level of normal state. We suggested that extract treatment lowered a hypersensitive reaction by decreasing of IgE level in blood and restored activities of superoxide dismutase and catalase. In conclusion, we proposed that C. officinale extract might be used as natural resources for treating effectively allergic contact-dermatitis.
