  • The traffic sign on the road should be easy to distinguishable even from far, and should be recognized in a short time. As traffic sign is a very important object which provides important information for the drivers to enhance safety, it has to attract human's attention among any other objects on the road. This paper proposes a new method of detecting the area of traffic sign, which uses attention module on the assumption that we attention our gaze on the traffic sign at first among other objects when we drive a car. In this paper, we analyze the previous studies of psycophysical and physiological results to get what kind of features are used in the process of human's object recognition, especially color processing, and with these results we detected the area of traffic sign. Various kinds of traffic sign images were tested, and the results showed good quality(average 97.8% success).

  • This paper describes prototype Aids to Navigation Simulation System (AtoNSiS) that we have recently developed Aids to Navigation (AtoN) training equipment based on the virtual reality technology. To produce an enhanced AtoN simulation experience, three-dimensional (3D) cardinal and lateral buoys are created, and then build up the virtual 3D waterway world according to the guidelines of IALA (International Association of Lighthouse Authorities) in region B. The AtoNSiS have Simulation Module (SM) and Explanatory Module (EM). SM is to learn about the IALA-B system using virtual navigation world varying with environmental factors. EM is to view more detailed marker characteristics using 3D objects. In this work, we present system design concepts, development processes, and simulation experiments of prototype AtoNSiS. Results from tests and evaluations with five subjects provide practical insight on the importance of AtoNSiS.

  • This study aims to evaluate the legibility distances of variable speed limit sign(VSL) for different sizes, luminances, and fog conditions through a field experiment. For this, extensive fog simulated environment has been constructed, and legibility distances are tested and recorded among test subjects for different luminances and sizes of VSL in control. Results showed that legibility distance increased as the size of VSL increased in the given illumination conditions, but it was not an exact linear trend. The size was also an important factor for determining legibility distance as the fog density increased, especially heavy fog conditions. In addition, the legibility distance also increased as the given illumination levels of VSL improved.

  • In recent, the enhancement of guide signs system for expressway were studied. And newly suggested signs in that research show left-right bilingual (Korean/English) configuration of 2 destinations whereas existing signs showed top-bottom configuration. However the new configuration have not been evaluated with discreet examination. In this study, several bilingual configuration designs are developed and evaluated with human factors experiment. Therefore the design with the shortest legibility time were chosen as a best design. As a result, the fact that the change of Korean/English configuration shows different results of the legibility time was confirmed. The guide sign with left-right bilingual (Korean/English) configuration of 2 destinations showed less legibility time than that of the existing signs with top-bottom configuration.

  • As a strategy to enhance traffic management, roundabouts come to the fore recently to decrease traffic accidents, streamline traffic flows, and expedite the realization of green transportation. As local governments introduced roundabouts, new road sign standards have to be established because the existing road sign regulations cannot be applied to roundabouts. Prior to trying to make suitable specification of sub-destination signs in roundabouts, regulations of other countries were examined and modified. The legend and location was calculated so that drivers could turn in time. Two specifications were determined by simulation experiments. As a result, drivers could read signs at right side better than at traffic island, and turn in time at 15cm legend size. Consequently, we proposed the minimum specifications and optimal locations of sub-destination signs.

  • Effective installation and operations of traffic safety signs in the advance warning area is of considerable interest for safer traffic management at freeway work zones. This study evaluated the feasibility of traffic safety sign installation based on a driving simulation experiment to take drivers' responsive characteristics into consideration. Both the compliance rate for speed limit and a lane-changing safety index were used for evaluating a set of driving simulation scenarios. It was identified that providing speed limit signs to reduce speed in advance and afterward guiding lane-changing could lead to safer maneuvering of vehicles entering work zones. The outcomes of this study are expected to be useful for revising freeway work zone management policies toward crash prevention.

  • In this paper, we suggest an automatic technique to obtain 3-D road information in complex urban areas using road pavement markings. This method is composed of following three main steps. The first step is extracting the pavement markings from aerial images, the second one is matching the same pavement markings in two aerial images, and the last one is obtaining the 3-D coordinates of those using EOP(exterior orientation parameters) of aerial images. Here, we focus on the first and second step because the last step can be performed by using the well hewn collinearity condition equation. We used geometric properties and spatial relationships of the pavement markings to extract the lane line markings on the images and extracted arrow lane markings additionally using template matching. And then, we obtained 3-D coordinates of the road using relational matching for the pavement markings. In order to evaluate the accuracy of extraction, we did a visual inspection and compared the result of this technique with those measured by digital photogrammetric system.

  • In this thesis, the color information is used to extract the traffic sign territory, and for recognizing the extracted image, it proposes the traffic sign recognition system that applies the error back propagation algorithm. The proposed method analyzes the color of traffic sign to extract and recognize the possible territory of traffic sign. The method of extracting the possible territory is to use the characteristics of YUV, YIQ, and CMYK color space from the RGB color space. Morphology uses the geometric characteristics of traffic sign to make the image segmentation. The recognition of traffic signs can be recognized by using the error back propagation algorithm. As a result of the experiment, the proposed system has proven its outstanding capability in extraction and recognition of candidate territory without the influence of differences in lighting and input image in various sizes.

  • With the advent of the 4th industrial revolution era, interest in autonomous driving technology is increasing. Accordingly it is necessary to seek safe driving by recognizing surrounding situations using sensors attached to autonomous vehicles along with the applicability of existing traffic facilities to autonomous driving lanes and the utilization of HD maps. In this study, in order to deduce the role of sensor only physical facilities which recognized through a laser scanner on an autonomous vehicle developed to improve road and traffic infrastructure, through comparative analysis with existing road facilities such as road signs, safety signs, and gaze guidance facilities. Sign facilities can promote driving safety by allowing autonomous vehicles to perform specific actions directly. In order to promote safe driving by recognizing sign facilities by using sensors for autonomous vehicles, it is necessary to prepare standards for installation, management, and use, and it is considered that management and supervision should be carried out continuously according to the standards.

  • The purpose of this study is to estimate the effectiveness of newly proposed guide sign system. Existing guide sign system on expressways in South Korea have point-based system with city, district names or land marks. They have also several problems as excessive amount of information, low use of exit number, and lack of lane designation arrows. Efficiency of existing guide sign system is deteriorated from these problems. The enhanced guide sign system is proposed to alleviate problems. The best alternative sign system is chosen from three different designs with preference survey and human factors evaluation. The new signs showed reduced time compared to existing signs with statical significance. The existing sign system conveys more information in farther distance and less information in nearer distance. Nevertheless new systems imparts more information i nearer distance. It is also suggested that lane designation signs should be established with overhead installation at 0m point for efficient direction choice.
