A comparative micromorphology of petal and sepal of 15 species of Lycopus was undertaken to assess their usefulness in species identification and to evaluate their significance in the taxonomy using scanning electron microscope and stereo microscope. Five types of trichome are found within the genus: unicellular cylindrical trichome, unicellular trichome with papillae, simple multicellular trichome, capitate glandular trichome, and peltate glandular trichome. The types, distribution, and density of the trichomes show considerable variation among the taxa. The distributional pattern of the unicellular cylindrical trichomes on inner side of corolla is differed among the investigated taxa, and can be classified into four patterns. The apex shape of sepal and the incised position of calyx are also various and be recognizedas four patterns. The shape of cell composing in both outer and inner sides of petal and sepal are shown variously. Finally, the taxonomic significance of micromorphology of the petal and sepal in identification and elucidation of the genus Lycopus, especially among the species is also briefly discussed.
In this study, the distribution of lectin receptors in culutured fibroblast was explored using colloidal gold label complexed with lectin WGA purified from wheat germ (Triticum vulgare). The lectin WGA gold complex, shown to recognize GlcNAc (N-acetylgalactosamine) and NeuNAc (N-acetylneuraminic acid) regions, was applied to detect binding sites in Lowicryl HM 20 sections viewed under electron microscope Labeled sections of the culutured fibroblast revealed gold particles specifically distributed on the cytoplasm and cell surface of the fibroblast. Labeling of 24 hours culutured fibroblast was then quantified and compared to that of 72 hours culutured fibroblast. 24 hours culutured fibroblast sections resulted in specific gold particle distribution on the cytoplasmic vesicle of the culutured fibroblast. These results indicate that lectin WGA receptors are located in the cytoplasmic vesicle and cell surface of the 24 hours culutured fibroblast, and on the cell surface of the 72 hours culutured fibroblast. Therefore, the GlcNAc and NeuNAc regions on the cell surface appear to be functionally associated with cell-recognition and protection from other cell of the tissue, and linked with secretion and exocytosis of the fibroblast cytoplasm.
Effects of modification of silver nanoparticles on the polymerization rate and morphology of poly(methyl methacrylate)(PMMA)/silver microspheres prepared by suspension polymerization of MMA were investigated. The silver nanoparticles and their surface hydrophilicity played an important role in the polymerization rate and the morphology of poly(methyl methacrylate) (PMMA)/silver microspheres. The polymerization rate increased slightly with modified silver nanoparticles. PMMA/silver microspheres with conversion up to 85% were obtained in spite of the low polymerization temperature. Due to the change of hydrophilicity of silver nanoparticles, different appearances of the microspheres having golf ball-like convex surfaces or concave surfaces were observed. As the hydrophilicity of silver was decreased, stable nanocomposites were prepared.
Defined spatial localization of biomolecules on the polymer surface Is potentially powerful method to generate biocompatible surface. Photolithography and photochemistry can be used to immobilize peptides only al a given region of the surface. In this study, peptide RGDS, one of the endothelial cells recognition sites of fibronectin, was covalently immobilized on the polystyrene coated surface with micropattern. It was performed by photochemical reactivity of a synthesized N-hydroxysuccinimidyl phenyl azide. The micropatterning was confirmed by staining with fluorescent dye, aminoacetamido fluorescein. Endothelial cell adhesion was observed only on the RGDS immobilized areas.
Anatomical and ultra-structural investigations on the vegetative and reproductive characters include stem, leaf, ovary, sepal, corolla, stigma, and seed surface on 10 taxa of the Korean Gentiana (Gentianaceae) were carried out to clarify the section and species limitation, As the results, taxonomic boundaries of the section, subsection, and series were recognized by using characters such as stem, leaf, sepal, ovary, and corolla. Also the seed morphology and testa surfaces were well defined at the species level.

Ultrasonic imprinting is a micropattern replication technology for a thermoplastic polymer surface that uses ultrasonic vibration energy; it has the advantages of a short cycle time and low energy consumption. Recently, ultrasonic imprinting has been further developed to extend its functionality: (i) selective ultrasonic imprinting using mask films and (ii) repetitive ultrasonic imprinting for composite pattern development. In this study, selective ultrasonic imprinting was combined with repetitive imprinting in order to replicate versatile micropatterns. For this purpose, a repetitive imprinting technology was further extended to utilize mask films, which enabled versatile micropatterns to be replicated using a single mold with micro-prism patterns. The replicated hybrid micropatterns were optically evaluated through laser light images, which showed that versatile optical diffusion characteristics can be obtained from the hybrid micropatterns.
