  • The purpose of this study is to clarify the effect of the monomer ratio on properties of the polymer-modified mortars using methylmethacrylate-butyl acrylate(MMA/BA) latexes, and to obtain basic data necessary to develop appropriate latexes for cement modifiers. From the test results, we knew that the pore volume of polymer-modified mortars using MMA/BA latexes at bound MMA contents of 60 and 70 percent is 7.5∼75nm and the fine pore volume is increased with an increase in the polymer-cement ratio. The total pore volume of polymer-modified mortars using MMA/BA latexes is linearly reduced with an increase in the bound MMA content and increased in the polymer-cement ratio. In general, the superior compressive strength of polymer-modified mortars using MMA/BA latexes is obtained at a bound MMA content of 70 percent and a polymer-cement ratio of 15%. And, the water absorption and chloride ion penetration depth are greatly affected by the polymer-cement ratio rather than the bound MMA content. The important factors affecting the properties of polymer-modified mortars using MMA/BA latexes polymerized with various monomer ratios are the variations of the pore size distribution with changing bound MMA content and the polymer-cement ratio.

  • In this study, we investigated the strength development and durability of geopolymer mortar using blast furnace slag only, and admixed with blast-furnace slag and fly ash as cementious materials in oder to develop cementless geopolymer concrete. In order to compare with the geopolymer mortar, the normal mortar using ordinary portland cement was also test. In view of the results, we found out that strength development, the resistance to freezing-thawing of the geopolymer mortar have better than the mortar using ordinary portland cement. Especially, using the combined with blast furnace slag and fly ash develop high strength of above 60 MPa, and improve the resistance of freezing-thawing of approximately 20%, but promote the velocity of carbonation of 2.2~3.5 times.

  • The objective of this study is to find the relationship between the tensile strength of the polymer film and the bond strength and tensile strength of the polymer-modified mortar using styrene (St) and butyl acrylate (BA), and porosity. In the test results, the bond strength and tensile strength of the polymer-modified mortar increased with increases in the tensile strength of polymer film and the fine pore volume.

  • Effect of the polymer-binder ratio and slag content on the properties of combined wet/dry-cured polymer-modified mortars using granulated blast-furnace slag are examined. Results shows that the flexural and compressive strengths of polymer-modified mortar using the slag tend to increase with increasing slag content, and reaches a maximum at a slag content of 40 %, and is inclined to increase with increasing polymer-binder ratio. Water absorption, carbonation depth and chloride ion penetration depth tend to decrease with increasing polymer-binder ratio and slag content. Accordingly, the incorporation of slag into polymer-modified mortars at a slag content of 40% is recommended for a combined wet/dry curing regardless of the types of polymer.

  • The effects of the monomer ratios on the typical properties of polymer modified mortars that contain styrene and butyl acrylate latexes was investigated. Basic data was also obtained that is necessary for the development of appropriate latexes for cement modifiers. Polymer modified mortars that contain styrene and butyl acrylate latexes polymerized with various monomer ratios were prepared for different polymer-cement ratios. They were then tested to obtain the particle size of the polymer latexes, air contents, water-cement ratios, flexural and compressive strengths, water absorption, and chloride-ion penetration. From the test results, the polymer modified mortars that have styrene and butyl acrylate latexes (with the mix proportions of synthesis having monomer ratios of between 40:60 to 60:40 for the appropriate mix proportions) could be recommended for practical applications. The basic properties of the polymer modified mortars were more affected by the polymer-cement ratio than by the monomer ratio, and were improved over unmodified mortar.

  • In this study, the characteristics of polymer-modified mortar which include UM resin, eco-friendly resin, was studied for improving the durability of concrete. UM and cement mortar were mixed with a certain percentage. Eco-friendly UM resin polymer-modified mortar was evaluated by compressive strength, splitting tensile strength, flexural strength, water absorption and chemical resistance experiments. The characteristics of eco-friendly UM resin polymer-modified mortar were evaluated by experiments. Performance of compressive strength and splitting tensile strength were decreasing. On the other hand, performance of flexural strength, water absorption and chemical resistance were increasing. Eco-friendly UM resin polymer-modified mortar reinforced concrete durability performance is excellent.

  • In this study, performance of fiber-reinforced polymer-modified mortar was studied for the development of eco-friendly materials for high performance repair and reinforcement. The general cement mortar and eco-friendly UM resin was mixed with a certain percentage for increased durability. To increase the strength of the polymer-modified mortar, PVA fiber, steel fiber and hybrid fiber were added at a constant rate. Hybrid fiber is contains the same percentage of PVA fiber and steel fiber. In order to determine the strength properties of fiber-reinforced polymer-modified mortar, the compressive strength test, the splitting tensile strength test and the flexural strength test were performed. And, in order to determine the durability properties of fiber-reinforced polymer-modified mortar, water absorption test and chemical resistance test were performed. From the experimental results, polymer-modified mortar using UM resin was improved durability. And the tensile strength and flexural strength increased, which were the vulnerability of fiber reinforced polymer-modified mortar. From this study, fiber-reinforced polymer-modified mortar using eco-friendly UM resin can be used to repair and reinforcement for the external exposure of concrete structures to improve the durability.

  • In this study, the fire resistance capabilities of polypropylene fiber-reinforced polymer-modified cement mortar were assessed to guarantee the fire resistance fo this materials, commonly employed in the repair of concrete structures. Experimental outcomes revealed that an increased water and polymer content heightened the likelihood of spalling, while longer polypropylene fibers and elevated polymer concentrations proved more effective in mitigating spalling.

  • Two main parameters were examined such as CSA content and polymer-binder ratio to find effects on the strength, water absorption, chloride ion penetration depth, carbonation depth, length change and chemical resistance of polymer-modified mortar with CSA and EVA polymer powder (EVAPP). As results, compressive, flexural, tensile, adhesive strengths, and length change of the polymer-modified mortar with CSA and EVAPP increases with increasing CSA content and polymer-binder ratio, although the water absorption, chloride ion penetration depth, and carbonation depth decrease with increasing polymer-binder ratio and CSA content, and also the chemical resistance decreases. Such strength and durability development is attributed to the high tensile strength of EVA polymer and the improved bond between cement hydrates and aggregates because of the addition of EVAPP and CSA.
