Polydopamine coating is one of the most straightforward and widely used method for surface modification inspired by adhesiveness of mussel foot protein contributed by co-existence of catechol and amine. This technique has been utilized not only in surface modification but other numerous fields of study as well. For the past decade, the subject of polydopamine has been thoroughly studied since the initial polydopamine research published in 2007, including its chemical structure, coating conditions, and material characteristics. In this study, we report the current trends and progress of polydopamine coating methods, the newly developing areas of polydopamine related research such as using dopamine derivatives and polyphenolic compounds, improvement of various functionalization and application of polydopamine coating, and explain the state of current attempts to discover the chemical mechanism, structure, and properties of polydopamine.
Recently, a novel coating method using an aqueous doapmine solution was proposed, the deposited coating was found to have extraordinarily strong-adhesion to numerous materials such as metal and polymers. However, it has suffered from many controversy in scientific fields due to its final structure and deposited mechanisms. Here, we have proposed a new structure for final dopamine product coupling with solid state spectroscopic, thermal behavior, and gas transport behaviors of dopamine coated microporous polyethersulfone membranes. In its final analysis, the results represented that it is a supramolecular aggregated of monomers consisting of 5,6-dihydroxyindoline and its derivative in contrast to previously proposed polymeric structure.

Graphene oxide has been gathering interests as a way to exfoliate graphene. Since the oxidation group of graphene oxide can hydrogen bond with various functional groups, tremendous efforts have been actively conducted to apply various applications. However, graphene oxide alone cannot substantially possess the mechanical properties required for the practical application. Therefore, in this study, polydopamine, which is a bio-mimetic mussel protein-inspired material, was combined with graphene oxide to form a large-area composite membrane at the liquid-gas interface. In addition, the morphology of the polydopamine-graphene oxide composite thin film was also controlled to obtain a composite membrane having a nano-wrinkle structure. It can be expected to be used in the next generation seawater desalination membranes or carbon composites because it can form mechanically superior and sophisticated nanostructures.
Although carbon nanotubes(CNTs) have outstanding theoretical mechanical and electrical properties, CNT fibers(CNTFs) have not yet reached that level. Particularly, tensile strength is only about 10% or less, so studies for making up for it are being actively conducted. As a way for improving mechanical strength, methods such as synthesizing long CNT, orientation, chemical cross-linking, hydrogen bonding and polymer infiltration are being studied. In this review paper, we report preparation methods for highly conductive and strong CNTF/Carbon composites through coating and infiltration followed by carbonization of carbon precursor polymers such as polyacrylonitrile (PAN) and polydopamine (PDA) on CNTFs.

An environmentally-friendly nanocoating method that effectively adds flame retardant(FR) and gas shielding properties to combustible polymeric construction materials such as flexible polyurethane (PU) foam was studied. Naturally-driven two-dimensional(2D) nanomaterials such as graphene oxide (GO) can exhibit liquid crystalline (LC) properties in aqueous solutions, enabling uniform coatings on the various substrates including 3D-porous foams. LC phase-assisted coating serves as 3D-scaffold, facilitating the introduction of small molecules having antioxidant capabilities such as dopamine which is to form uniformly stacked FR coating. Additionally, the structural characteristics of the 2D-materials can effectively hinder the migration of toxic gases and flammable substances in the gas phase generated during combustion. This LC phase flame retardant coating technology could be a new approach to provide environmentally friendly and effective flame retardant and gas barrier properties to various types of polymeric materials.

Novel adhesive polyaspartamides containing catechol and primary amine pendent groups were synthesized through successive ring-opening aminolysis reactions of dopamine (DOP) and ethylenediamine (EDA) with polysuccinimide (PSI). The oxidative gelation of aqueous dopamine-modified polyaspartamide was observed by adding $NaIO_4$ as the oxidizing reagent. FTIR, UV-vis and oscillatory rheometry was used to elucidate the oxidative cross-linking toward gel formation. The prepared gel was characterized by the swelling degree, thermogravimetric analysis (TGA), and by scanning electronic microscopy (SEM).

T-cell deficiency may occur in various clinical conditions including congenital defects, cell/organ transplantation, HIV infection and aging. In this regard, the development of artificial thymus has recently been attracting much attention. To achieve this aim, the development of techniques for 3D culture of thymic stromal cells is necessary because thymocytes grown only in a 3D thymic microenvironment can be differentiated fully to become mature, immunocompetent T cells; the same cannot be achieved for thymocytes grown in 2D. This study aimed to develop a nanotechnology-based 3D culture technique using polymeric scaffolds for thymic epithelial cells (TECs), the main component of thymic stromal cells. Scanning electron microscopic observation revealed that the pores of both PCL and PCL/PLGA scaffolds were filled with TECs. Interestingly, TECs grown in 3D on polydopamine-coated scaffolds exhibited enhanced cell attachment and proliferation compared to those grown on non-coated scaffolds. In addition, the gene expression of thymopoietic factors was upregulated in TECs cultured in 3D on polydopamine-coated scaffolds compared to those cultured in 2D. Taken together, the results of the present study demonstrate an efficient 3D culture model for TECs using polymeric scaffolds and provide new insights into a novel platform technology that can be applied to develop functional, biocompatible scaffolds for the 3D culture of thymocytes. This will eventually shed light on techniques for the in vitro development of T cells as well as the synthesis of artificial thymus.
