  • Boundary element method is applied to simulate nonlinear water waves using Green's identity formula in a numerical wave flume. A system of linear equations is formulated from the governing equation and free surface boundary conditions in order to calculate velocity potential and water surface elevation at each nodal point. The velocity square terms are included in the dynamic free surface boundary condition. The free surface is treated as a moving boundary. the vertical variation of velocity potential being considered in calculating the time derivative of the velocity potential at the free surface. The present method is applied to simulate solitary wave and Stokes 2nd order wave, and shows excellent agreements with their theoretical values.

  • This study was purposed to elucidate the best optimum sites by ecophysiological response measurements of Kalopanax pictus samplings of plantation. The diurnal changes of the stomatal transpiration, water use efficiency, water potential, and intercellullar $CO_2$ concentration of leaves were measured by the portable IR $CO_2$ analyzer. The results obtained are summarized as follows. 1) The daily stomatal transpiration rate was highest at 10:00 a.m. After 16:00, the stomatal transpiration rate rapidly decreased. 2) The daily water use efficiency was maximum at 8:00 a.m., and then rapidly decreased until midday with decreasing water potential. 3) The daily $C_i/C_a$ ratio rapidly decreased until 9:00 a.m., and then showed a stable value until 16:00, and then rapidly increased. The daily intercellullar $CO_2$ concentration ($C_i/C_a$ ratio) showed the same tendency as water potential changes. Consequently, stomatal transpiration and water use efficiency was increased with high water potential of leaves at am, and then remarkably decreased with low water potential at pm.

  • When the thickness becomes so small as in the case of the trailing edge of the propeller blade or when the curvature of the surface varies rapidly as in ship stem, the existing panel method employing a flat-surface panel, obtained by collapsing the original non-planar surface into its mean location, suffers the leakage problem and also gives inaccurate induction upon the field point very close to the panel. The hyperboloidal panel deals with the induction from the dipole distributed on the non-planar surface without approximation, overcoming the defects of the flat-surface panel. This paper introduces two distinct derivations of the formulae to compute the integral for the potential induced by a dipole of uniform density distributed on a non-planar hyperboloidal surface element. One method is based on the Gauss-Bonnet theorem and the other is based on the transformation of the surface integral into a line integral.

  • An analytical method for predicting the velocity potential around a pulsating bubble close to a free or rigid wall was established using an image method. Because the velocity potential should satisfy two boundary conditions at the bubble surface and rigid wall, we investigated the velocity in the normal direction at the two boundaries by adding the image bubbles. The potential was analyzed by decomposing the bubble motion as two independent motions, pulsation and translation, and we found that when the number of image bubbles was greater than ten, the two boundary conditions were satisfied for the translation term. By adding many image bubbles after the approximation of the pulsation term, we also confirmed that the boundary condition at the wall was satisfied.

  • The radiation potential of a ship advancing in waves is studied using the 3D time-domain forward-speed free-surface Green function and the Green integral equation. Numerical solutions are obtained by making use of the 2nd order BEM(Boundary Element Method) which make it possible to take account of the line integral along the waterline in a rigorous manner. The 6 degree of freedom motion memory functions of a hemisphere and the Wigley seakeeping model obtained by direct integration of the time-domain 3D potentials over the wetted surface are presented for various Froude numbers.

  • A mathematical model for the hydrodynamic forces acting on the ship manoeuvring in waves is formulated and a numerical method for the problem is developed. The motion of a ship, which manoeuvres in waves, may be thought to have two components; one is a high frequency component due to encounter waves, and the other is a low frequency component due to manoeuvring motion. So the method of two time scale expansion is used to divide linear boundary value problem. For the effects of waves on the manoeuvring motion of a ship, only the second order drift forces are considered. The integral equation for the velocity potential is solved by 3 dimensional panel method and hydrodynamic forces are calculated by direct integral method.

  • In case of application of electrophoresis method for leakage restoration of waste impoundment, main points of consideration were to evaluate the mobility of clay particles by electrophoretic force and capacity of leakage repair in leachate electrolyte system contained with various chemical species. However, the flocculation phenomena of clay particles induced by electrochemical interaction between various chemical species and clay particles would cause the big problems in electrophoresis method. Therefore, a series of laboratory tests such as one-dimensional electrophoresis and gravitational experiments were carried out in order to identify the specific chemical species affected flocculation of clay particles and the range of chemical concentration in leachate. In addition, the characteristics of clay particle behavior with chemical species and concentration range in leachate were analized using the concept of the settling velocity, zeta potential, and electrophoretic velocity.

  • In this paper, we investigate a collision avoidance algorithm for unmanned aerial vehicles using potential field based on the relative velocity of obstacles. The potential field consists of the attraction force and the repulsive force that are generated for the target and the obstacles. And the field can be classified into the attractive potential field generated by the target and the repulsive potential field generated by the obstacle, respectively. In this study, we construct an attractive potential field as a function of the distance between the UAV and the target position. On the other hand, a repulsive potential field is created by a function of distance and the relative velocity of the obstacle with respect to the UAV. The proposed potential field based collision avoidance algorithm is evaluate through simulations.

  • Information theoretic learning (ITL) methods based on random symbols (RS) use a set of random symbols generated according to a target distribution and are designed nonparametrically to minimize the cost function of the Euclidian distance between the target distribution and the input distribution. One drawback of the learning method is that it can not utilize the input power statistics by employing a constant stepsize for updating the algorithm. In this paper, it is revealed that firstly, information potential input (IPI) plays a role of input in the cost function-derivative related with information potential output (IPO) and secondly, input itself does in the derivative related with information potential error (IPE). Based on these observations, it is proposed to normalize the step-size with the statistically varying power of the two different inputs, IPI and input itself. The proposed algorithm in an communication environment of impulsive noise and multipath fading shows that the performance of mean squared error (MSE) is lower by 4dB, and convergence speed is 2 times faster than the conventional methods without step-size normalization.
