  • Dynamic behavior of flexible rectangular liquid containers is analyzed by a two-dimensional coupled boundary element-finite element method. The irrotational motion of inviscid and incompressible ideal fluid is modeled by boundary elements and the motion of structure by finite elements. A singularity free integral formulation is employed for the implementation of boundary element method. Coupling is performed by using compatibility and equilibrium conditions along the interface between the fluid and structure. The fluid-structure interaction effects are reflected into the coupled equation of motion as added fluid mass matrix and sloshing stiffness matrix. By solving the eigen-problem for the coupled equation of motion, natural frequencies and mode shapes of coupled system are obtained. The free surface sloshing motion and hydrodynamic pressure developed in a flexible rectangular container due to horizontal and vertical ground motions are computed in time domain.

  • This paper deals with the free vibration of horizontally curved beams with transition currie. Based on the dynamic equilibrium equations of a curved beam element subjected to the stress resultants and inertia forces, the governing differential equations are derived for the out-of-plane vibration of curved beam with variable curvature. These equations are applied to the beam having transition curve in which the clothiod curve is chosen in this study. The differential equations are solved by the numerical methods lot calculating the natural frequencies and mode shapes. For verifying theories developed herein, the frequency parameters obtained from this studs and ADINA are compared with each other. As the numerical results, the various parametric studies effecting on natural frequencies are investigated and those results are presented in tables and figures.

  • Split Hopkinson pressure bar(SHPB) is used to obtain compressive stress-strain data and deformation characteristics of brittle materials such as rock and concrete. SHPB demands both dynamic stress equilibrium condition and nearly constant strain rate before the failure of the specimen. Pulse shape technique, which places a thin metal disk between launched impact bar and incident bar, should be adopted to satisfy both conditions. In this study, metallic disks with various shapes were used to control the incident impact wave. The results show that the peak value of stress and the length of waves increased with decreasing thickness and diameter of the pulse shaper. In order to investigate shape and strain rate-dependency of the pulse shapers, dynamic compressive stress-strain curves were obtained and analyzed.

  • In this study, the new solubility data at high pressure condition applicable to pre-combustion $CO_2$ capture system were found. Experiments were conducted within the temperature range of $40{\sim}80^{\circ}C$ while increasing the pressure from 0 to 50 bar. The effect of MDEA (N-methyldiethanolamine) concentration was studied by varying the concentration from 30 to 50 wt%. In order to improve the absorption rate of MDEA, piperazine was added in ranging of 5~10 wt% into the MDEA solution as a activator. From this experiment, the equilibrium partial pressure was increased with increasing MDEA concentration in absorbent and reaction temperature. Also absorption rate was increased with increasing the reaction temperature. It was noted that the mixture of piperazine and MDEA aqueous solution showed faster absorption rate by 2.5 times than only the MDEA aqueous solution with 40 wt% cencentration at initial reaction stage and also increased absorption capacity by 16%.

  • The present study proposes a simple equation to straightforwardly determine the potential plastic hinge length in boundary element of reinforced concrete shear walls. From the idealized curvature distribution along the shear wall length, a basic formula was derived as a function of yielding moment, maximum moment, and additional moment owing to diagonal tensile crack. Yielding moment and maximum moment capacities of shear wall were calculated on the basis of compatability of strain and equilibrium equation of internal forces. The development of a diagonal tensile crack at web was examined from the shear transfer capacity of concrete specified in ACI 318-11 provision and then the additional moment was calculated using the truss mechanism along the crack proposed by Park and Paulay. The moment capacities were simplified from an extensive parametric study; as a result, the equivalent plastic hinge length of shear walls could be formulated using indices of longitudinal tensile reinforcement at the boundary element, vertical reinforcement at web, and applied axial load. The proposed equation predicted accurately the measured plastic hinge length, providing that the mean and standard deviation of ratios between predictions and experiments are 1.019 and 0.102, respectively.

  • There exist residual stresses and deformations in welded structures because of nonuniform temperature distribution. The thermal elasto-plastic analysis is necessary to describe the behavor of the structure during welding. In this paper, we calculated the residual stresses and deformations of the welded beam using the I-dimensional layered beam theory. In the previous 1-dimensional analyses, there were restrictions that the equilibrium conditions which were effective only on beams with infinite length were used, and the boundary conditions could not be considered adequately. But, the layered beam theory based on the incremental finite element method, can overcome these restrictions. On the other hand, in the 2-dimensional analysis, the computing time is large because of many degrees of freedom, and there was inaccuracy in the calculation of welding deformations. However, the layered beam theory can take into account the variation of properties along the depth, and can reduce the degrees of freedom considerably in comparision with the 2-dimensional analysis, and shows good agreement with the experiments.

  • Solvent extraction behaviors of iron(III) from chloride solution at high ionic strength condition between Alamine336 and TBP were compared by using MaCabe-Thiele diagram. Extraction isotherms of iron by the two extractants were obtained by calculating the equilibrium concentrations of iron in both phases from the initial extraction conditions. In calculating the equilibrium concentration of iron, chemical equilibria in the aqueous phase and mass balance together with the solvent extraction reaction were considered. MaCabe-Thiele diagram of iron by 1M Alamine336 indicated that two extraction stages could lead to complete extraction of 0.5M iron from 3M HCl solution at an A/O ratio of 6/5. The extraction power of 1M Alamine336 was found to be the same as 2-3M TBP. MaCabe-Thiele diagram together with the physical properties of the two extractants indicated that Alamine336 is superior to TBP in extracting ferric iron from chloride solution.

  • It is usual that underground structures are constructed within a multi-layered medium. In this paper, an efficient numerical modelling of multi-layered structural systems is studied using coupled analysis of finite elements and boundary elements. The finite elements are applied to the area in which the material nonlinearity dominates, and the boundary elements are applied to the far field where the nonlinearity is relatively weak. In the boundary element modelling of the multi-layered medium, fundamental solutions are not readily available. Thus, methods which can utilize existing Kelvin solutions are sought for the interior multi-layered domain problem. The interior domain problem which has piecewise homogeneous layers is analyzed using boundary elements with Kelvin solution, by discretizing each homogeneous subdomain and enforcing compatibility and equilibrium conditions between interfaces. Developed methodology is verified by comparing its results with those from the finite element analysis and it is concluded that coupled analysis using boundary elements and finite elements can be reasonable and efficient.

  • In this study, a slope stability chart for assessing stability of homogeneous simple soil slopes is proposed. Most existing slope stability charts are based on limit equilibrium method, which is not rigorous in mechanical standpoint. Meanwhile, limit analysis based on the principle of virtual work and the bound theorems of plasticity is suitable for evaluating the stability of geotechnical structures such as slope due to its simplicity in computation and mechanical rigor. Numerical limit analysis taking advantage of finite elements and linear programming can consider various slope conditions and, in addition, find the optimum stability solution with effeciency. In this study, a numerical limit analysis program in terms of effective stress is developed and a mechanically rigorous slope stability chart is proposed by performing stability analyses for various slope conditions. Pore pressure ratio, commonly used in stability charts, is applied to consider the effects of pore pressure for effective stress analysis. As a result of comparison between proposed stability chart and Spencer's stability chart, it was found that Spencer's chart solutions are biased to lower bound which means conservative in design.

  • The behaviors of the reinforced concrete membrane elements are expected by Navier's three principles of the mechanics of materials. The adopted cyclic stress-strain curves of concrete consist of seven different unloading and loading stages in the compressive zone and six other stages in the tensile zone. The curves took into account the softening of concrete that was influenced by the tensile strain in the perpendicular direction of cracks. The stress-strain relationships for steel bar embedded in concrete subjected to reversed cyclic forces considered the tension stiffening effect and Baushinger effect. The predicted results of the analysis based on Navier's principles were in good agreement with the observed shear stress-strain relationships as well as transverse and longitudinal strains.
