  • Balance measurement is widely used in fields of physiotherapy, neurology, sport medicine and rehabilitation medicine. This paper presents the development of balance measurement and rehabilitation training system. To this end, we have developed a prototype system using an 3-axis accelerometer sensor attached to the under surface of balance board. As a results, the system is stable and shows a good degree of balance function. Also, the various patterns for rehabilitation training can be added easily. This system can be used for daily balance monitoring and will contribute to increasing the effectiveness of training.

  • In this paper, a new rehabilitation training system was developed to improve equilibrium sense by combining virtual reality technology with a fixed exercise bicycle. The subjects consisted of two groups. A group of young people, was compared against a group of elderly. We measured three different running modes of virtual bicycle system with two successive sets. The parameters measured were running time, velocity, the weight movement, the degree of the deviation from the road, and the variables about the center of pressure. The repeated training, our results showed that the running capability of the elderly improve compared. In addition, it was found out that the ability of postural control and the equilibrium sense was improved with the presentation of the visual feedback information of the distribution of weight. From the results of this experiment, we showed that our newly developed system might be useful in the diagnosis of equilibrium sense or in the improvement of the sense of sight and, somatic, and vestibular sense of the elderly in the field of rehabilitation training.

  • The purpose of this study investigate the effects of 8 weeks plyometric training on power, dynamic balance and joint position sensory in Taekwoondo demmonstrators. Twenty healthy collegiate Taekwoondo demonstrators were randomly assigned to either an exercise group (Ex=10), and a control group (Con=10), Ex group completed the plyometric training in three times a week, 60 minute for 8 weeks. Testing before and after training include the Sargent jump, standing long jump, back muscle strength, Dynamic balance and joint position sensory. Sargent jump, standing long jump and back muscle strength were significantly development(p<.05). And dynamic balance were significantly exercise effect in posterolateral(p<.01) and posteromedial(p<.05). Not only but also, joint position sensroy were significantly exercise effect in left food 15°(p<.01) and 45°(p<.05). The results of the study showed that 8 weeks of plyometric training had a positive effect on the power, dynamic balance and joint position sensory in Taekwondo demonstrator.

  • The purpose of this study was to investigate the effect of somatosensory input on the gait ability and equilibrium sensory of elderly women. The subjects who participated in this study were 31 elderly women with a mean age of 75 years or older who no using a walking stick and had no abnormality in otolaryngology. The control group consisted of 30 elderly women who did not exercise regularly more than twice a week. Dependent variables consisted of 2.44m timed up and go test, 10m usual gait, 10m fast gait and 6minute gait. The equilibrium sensory test was performed using EquiTest (NeuroCom, USA). The results of the study on gait ability were not statistically significant for 2.44m timed up and go test, and 10m usual gait. However, 10m fast gait (P<.001) and 6min gait (P<.05) showed significant differences. According to the results of the study on equilibrium sensory ability, there was no significant difference between Condition 1 and Condition 5 however Condition 2 (P<.01), Condition 3 (P<.01), Condition 4(P<.01) and Condition 6 (P<.05) showed statistically significant differences. In conclusion, walking stick have beneficial effects on walking and equilibrium sensation, and elderly women need to actively use walking stick when going out and walking.

  • This paper describes the quantitative analysis on the improvement of equilibrium sensory using virtual bicycle system. We have used a virtual bicycle system that combines virtual reality technology with a bicycle. In this experiment, 10 subjects were tested to investigate the influencing factors on equilibrium sensory. Straight road and curved road driving at several factors including cycling time, number of times of path deviation, and center of pressure(COP) were extracted and evaluated to quantify the extent of control. Also, To improve the effect of balance training, we investigated the usefulness of virtual feedback information by weight shift. The result showed that the system could be effective for equilibrium sensory rehabilitation training device. The analysis method might also have wider applicability to the rehabilitation field.

  • This paper describes the development of the new type equilibrium sensation measuring system for human with handicap in the equilibrium sensation. The medium and small hospital could not use the developed equilibrium sensation measuring system, because it is very high prices. Therefore, the new type system should be developed to measure the numerical value of the equilibrium sensation in human with handicap. In this paper, First, two 3-axis force/moment sensors which can measure force Fz, moments Mx and My simultaneous were designed and manufactured, second, the high speed measuring device which can acquire the output from two 3-axis force/moment sensors, third, the new type equilibrium sensation measuring system was developed, then the characteristic test of the developed equilibrium sensation measuring system carried out, it is confirmed that the system could measure the swing body of human with handicap.
