  • A numerical model that can simulate the nonlinear behavior of ultra high strength fiber reinforced concrete (UHSFRC) structures subjected to monotonic loading is introduced. The material properties of UHSFRC, such as compressive and tensile strength or elastic modulus, are different from normal strength reinforced concrete. The uniaxial compressive stress-strain relationship of UHSFRC is designed on the basis of experimental result, and the equivalent uniaxial stress-strain relationship is introduced for proper estimation of UHSFRC structures. The steel is uniformly distributed over the concrete matrix with particular orientation angle. In advance, this paper introduces a numerical model that can simulate the tension-stiffening behavior of tension part of the axial member on the basis of the bond-slip relationship. The reaction of steel fiber is considered for the numerical model after cracks of the concrete matrix with steel fibers are formed. Finally, the introduced numerical model is validated by comparison with test results for idealized UHSFRC beams.

  • A number of true triaxial tests on rock samples have been conducted since the late 1960 and their results strongly suggest that the intermediate principal stress has a considerable effect on rock strength. Based on these experimental evidence, various 3-D rock failure criteria accounting for the effect of the intermediate principal stress have been proposed. Most of the 3-D failure criteria, however, are focused on the phenomenological description of the rock strength from the true triaxial tests, so that the associated strength parameters have little physical meaning. In order to confirm the likelihood that the intermediate principal stress dependency of rock strength is related to the presence of weak planes and their distribution to the preferred orientation, true triaxial tests are simulated with the transversely isotropic rock model. The conventional Mohr-Coulomb criterion is extended to its anisotropic version by incorporating the concept of microstructure tensor. With the anisotropic Mohr-Coulomb criterion, the critical plane approach is applied to calculate the strength of the transversely isotropic rock model and the orientation of the fracture plane. This investigation hints that the spatial distribution of microstructural planes with respect to the principal stress triad is closely related to the intermediate principal stress dependency of rock strength.

  • The object of this study is form finding, stress-strain analysis and cutting pattern analysis of membrane structures under the following assumptions : (1) material is linearly elastic (2) stress state is plane stress. The cable and membrane structures undergo large deformation because of its highly flexibility, therefore, we must take account of its geometric nonlinearity. The analysis procedure is consisted of three steps considering geometric nonlinearity unlike any other structures. First step is the form finding analysis to determine the initial equilibrium shape. Second step is the stress-strain analysis to investigate the behaviors of structures under various external loads. Once a stationary shape has been fount a cutting pattern based on the form finding analysis may be generated for manufacturing procedure. In this paper, form finding, stress-strain analysis and cutting pattern analysis is carried out for applying to Seoguipo worldcup soccer stadium roof structures and optimal cutting pattern analysis technique is proposed.

  • FEM requires the stress-strain relationship equations for numerical analyses. However, most formulations for the stress-strain relationship published up to the present are not satisfactory enough to properly express all the levels from the small strain to the peak. Tatsuoka and Shibuya (1991) suggested a new single formulation applicable not only to a wide range of geo-materials from soft clay to soft rock, but also to a wide range of strain levels from $10^{-6}$ to $10^{-2}$. The plain strain compression test is carried out to seven samples of research standard sand specimens and two samples of glass beads, which have been used at world-renowned research institutes. In this study, strains of the maximum principal stress (${\sigma}_1$) and the minimum principal stress (${\sigma}_3$) were thoroughly measured from $10^{-6}$ to $10^{-2}$, and the result, applied to Tatsuoka and Shibuya's new formulation, coincided closely with the measured data of the stress-strain relationship from the small strain to the peak.

  • The matrix method, as an effective FEM formulation for the analysis of rigid-plastic deformation, was applied to the bore expanding of anisotropic sheet metal. The effect of planar anisotropy on sheet metal deformation was studied for bore expanding process under the uniform radial stretching condition, and the results were compared with isotropic and normal anisotropic solutions. Experiments were carried out using a flat punch for cold-rolled sheet metal. The experimental results were compared with computations from the matrix method with the boundary conditions corresponding to actual experiment. Both in theory and experiment, it is found that the maximum thinning which results in necking occurs in the direction of the minimum R-value. The results also suggest that the matrix method is efficient for analyzing planar anisotropic sheet metal. The comparison between theory and experiment suggests that Hill's theory of planar anisotropy is somewhat exaggerated. However, the theoretical predictions are in qualitative agreement with the experimental results.

  • In this paper, the mongrel singular element with 6 node triangle and 8 node quadrilateral element with J-integral are developed and applied to the various plane crack problems for the isotropic material. The convergence nature is excellent for various crack size with even coarse mesh using the direct method. But the results of the mongrel element with J-integral are worse than the former's ones. Fracture tests were conducted on precracked CT specimens. Results show that, for 7075-T6 aluminum wing spar materials, the fracture toughness is 31.06 ksi.inch $\frac{1}{2}$ in the L-T direction.

  • In this study, friction angles on the surface of vertical rigid ground anchor in normally consolidated dry sand were measured by model pullout tests in laboratory. Friction angles were obtained from the normal and shear stresses measured along depth of the anchor stir face by attaching several 2-dimensional load cells. Model tests were conducted under the plane strain state and axial symmetric state. From the results of tests, it was concluded that the maximum friction angle on the anchor surface coincides nearly with the maximum angle of stress obliquity on the plane of zero-extension direction obtained by plane strain compression test. This result was made with regard to the strength anisotropy and stress dependency of sand. It showed that when angle of shear resistance of the sand is applied to the friction angle of the anchor surface, the design capacity could be less than the applied force, thus making the anchor unsafe.
