In this study, a strain-controlled fatigue test of widely-used 316L stainless steel with excellent corrosion resistance and mechanical properties was conducted, in order to assess its fatigue life. Low cycle fatigue behaviors were analyzed at room temperature, as a function of the strain amplitude and strain ratio. The material was hardened during the initial few cycles, and then was softened during the long post period, until failure occurred. The fatigue life decreased with increasing strain amplitude. Masing behavior in the hysteresis loop was shown under the low strain amplitude, whereas the high strain amplitude caused non-Masing behavior and reduced the mean stress. Low cycle fatigue life prediction based on the cyclic plastic energy dissipation theory, considering Masing and non-Masing effects, showed a good correlation with the experimental results.
The overlay model is a certain kinds of numerical analysis method to present the material non-lineariy which is represented the baushinger effect and the strain hardening. This model simulates the complex behavior of material by controlling the properties of the layers which like the hardening ratio, the section area and the yield stress. In this paper, the constitutive equation and plastic flow rule of each layer which are laid in the plane stress field are obtained by using the thermodynamics. Two numerical examples were tested for the validity of proposed method in uniaxial stress and plane stress field with comparable experimental results. The only parameter for the test is the yield stress distribution of each layers.

Stress concentrations around discontinuities, such as a hole or a sudden change in cross section of a structural member, have great important cause in the most materials failure because the stress near the points of application of concentrated loads can reach values much larger than the average value of the stress in the member. This paper presents the stress concentrations between fillet and hole at different locations in a stepped plate under tensile loading. The analysis for interaction effect of stress concentration was performed by photoelasticity and ANSYS which is a commercial finite element software. From the analysis results, the circular hole located at the different position from the fillet radius can cause different values of stress concentration factor within interacting region.

This paper describes the extension of the numerical model, which was developed to simulate the nonlinear behavior of reinforced concrete (RC) structures subjected to monotonic in plane shear and introduced in the companion paper, to simulate effectively the behavior of RE structures under cyclic loadings. While maintaining all the basic assumptions adopted in defining the constitutive relations of concrete under monotonic loadings, a hysteretic stress strain relation of concrete, which across the tension compression region, is defined. In addition, unlike previous simplified stress strain relations, curved unloading and reloading branches inferred from the stress strain relation of steel considering the Bauschinger effect we used. The modifications of the stress strain relation of steel are also introduced to reflect pinching effect depending on the shear span ratio and an average stress distribution in a cracked RC element. Finally, correlation studies between analytical results and experimental studies are conducted to establish the validity of the proposed model.
This paper describes a proposal for average crack width and immediate deflection calculation in structural concrete members. The model is mathematically derived from actual bond stressslip relationships and tension stiffening effect between reinforcement and the surrounding concrete, and the actual strains of steel and concrete are integrated respectively along the embedded length between the adjacent cracks so as to obtain the difference in the axial elongation. With these, a model for average crack width and immediate deflection in reinforced concrete flexural members are proposed utilizing difference in the axial elongation and average steel strain and moment-curvature relationship with taking account of bond characteristics. The model is applied to the test specimens available in literatures, and the crack width and deflections predicted by the proposal equation in this study are closed to the experimentally measured data compared the current code provisions.
The concrete creep deformation of a hybrid composite section can cause additional deformation of the composite section and the stress relaxation of pre-compressive stress on the concrete section due to partial restraint of the deformation. In this study, the stress relaxation coefficient method (SRCM) is derived for simple analysis of complicate hybrid or composite sections for engineering purpose. Also, an equation of the stress relaxation coefficient (SRC) required for the SRCM is proposed. The SRCM is derived with the parameters of a creep coefficient, section and loading properties using the same method as the constant-creep step-by-step method (CC-SSM). The errors of the SRCM is improved by using the proposed SRC equation than the average SRC's which were estimated from the CC-SSM. The root mean square error (RMSE) of the SRCM with the proposed SRC equation for concrete with creep coefficient less than 3 was less than 1.2% to the creep deformation at the free condition and was 3.3% for the 99% reliability. The proposed SRC equation reflects the internal restraint of composite sections, and the effective modulus of elasticity computed with the proposed SRC can be used effectively to estimate the rigidity of a composite section in a numerical analysis which can be applied in analysis of the external restrain effect of boundary conditions.
In order to estimate the influence of wind stress in the southwestern coastal waters of the Japan Sea, the wind stress was estimated from the shipboard wind data of the Fisheries Research and Development Agency along the serial observation lines and Buoy No. 6 of the Japan Meteorological Agency. 5,100 wind data are used to construct a data set of monthly mean wind stress during 10 years from 1978 to 1987. The negative values of the mean zonal wind stress curl at Ulleung Basin in the study area seem to be responsible for the formation of the warm core. The volume transport of the East Korea Warm Current are estimated quantitatively by the variations of the Ekman transport associated with the reversing direction of the monsoon. And the distribution of the warm core is explained by the simple three layer model.

Turbulent Couette flow between coaxial cylinders with inner one rotating has been investigated experimentally and numerically. The radius ratio of the coaxial cylinders is 0.43. Mean velocity and turbulent stresses have been measured by hot-wire anemometer in the range of Reynolds number based on the velocity at rotating wall and the radial distance between walls, 60,900-187,000. For the numerical computation, the Reynolds stress model has been used as a turbulence closure model. Measurements of mean velocity show that the velocity profile of wall layer largely deviates from universal logarithmic law due to the effect of streamline curvature, especially in the region near the stationary outer cylinder. The results computed with the Reynolds stress model agree well with the experimental data in the prediction of circumferential intensity of turbulent fluctuations. However, the computed level of radial intensity is much higher than the measurement. Curvature-corrected versions of the Reynolds stress model improves the prediction of turbulent intensities, but the results are not fully satisfactory.

This paper assesses the suitability of existing standards for plastic material models and performance level evaluation methods in seismic performance evaluations of concrete dam piers during Maximum Credible Earthquakes (MCE). Dynamic plastic analysis was conducted to examine the applicability of the plastic material model under various conditions. As a result reveal that when the minimum reinforcement ratio is not met, the average stress-average strain method recommended in current dam seismic performance evaluation guidelines tends to underestimate pier responses compared to the predicted outcomes of dynamic elastic analysis. Consequently, the paper proposes an improvement plan that treats dam piers with an insufficient minimum reinforcement ratio as unreinforced and integrates fracture energy into concrete tensile behavior characteristics for performance level evaluation. Implementing these improvements can lead to more conservative evaluation outcomes compared to current seismic performance evaluation methods.
