  • This paper proposes a solution to the problems of constructing and installing sway braces for existing standpipes in narrow spaces and pits. The study develops a floor-fixed sway brace for a narrow space that can support the ground area under horizontal seismic loads (X-axis, Y-axis) as well as vertical seismic loads (Z-axis). The results of structural analysis using SolidWorks simulation showed that the eccentric load was generated in the first design according to the anchored position along the vertical direction, and the problem of exceeding the allowable stress of the material along the horizontal and vertical directions. In the second design model, deformation caused by the eccentric load along the vertical direction, similar to the first design model, did not occur. The maximum strain rate was 0.17%, which is approximately 12.84% less than the first design model (Maximum strain rate of 13.01%). It was confirmed that the structural stability and durability improved. Compressive and tensile load testing of the prototypes showed that all of them meet the performance criteria of the standard.

  • Membrane materials are very flexible, thus wrinkling, uniaxial state, can be occurred. The wrinkling are due to lots of various factors as eccentric force, construction errors, and fabrication errors. These wrinkled membrane elements are in status of uniaxial stress. In the paper, a method which be able to check the wrinkling is proposed. The stress-deformation analysis of membrane structures for given external load will be carried out, and here the membrane elements are regarded as wrinkled state if the principal stress 2 is smaller than 0. With proposed method, two existed construction examples, Suwon auditorium and Okinawa 75 Expo, are analyzed.

  • There are many restrictions in the application of high-strength HSSs, including yield strength and yield ratio for the 600-MPa steel. The AISC and Canadian codes recommend that the yield strength and yield ratio of HSS members be 360 MPa and 80%, respectively. It is important to understand the true buckling behaviors of HSSs using high-strength steel at the limit states. There are many experimental data regarding the rectangular HSSs, and the circular ones are not enough for high-strength steel. Therefore, this study was conducted to create a better understanding of the buckling behaviors of the 600- and 400-MPa steels based on the results of the finite-element analysis that was done before the experiment. To understand the structural behaviors of the aforementioned steels, the width-to-thickness ratios, the angle of the web members, the yield strength, and the gap of the web members were selected as the main parameters in this study, and ABAQUS, a general finite-element program, was used.As a result, the compression web member reached elastic buckling in the 600-MPa steel and inelastic buckling in the 400-MPa steel. A brittle fracture occurred in the case where the yield ratio was greater than 80%. At the same time, it was found that the limit strength determined via FEM analysis had a higher value compared to the code evaluation with the variation of the width-to-thickness ratio in the main code member. The change in the connection load in high-strength steels was not identified by the other factors.

  • This paper investigates an experimental behavior of circular columns and beam-columns made of HSB600 high strength steel as a fundamental study to enhance the applicability of HSB steel. The applicability of the current Standard such as KBC and Eurocode 3 is also evaluated. A total of six specimens are fabricated and tested. The main parameters are slenderness ratio(KLe/r = 12, 14, 40, 65), diameter-to-thickness ratio(D/t = 25, 40), and eccentricity ratio(e/D = 0, 0.5). It is drawn from the experiment that both the KBC and Eurocode 3 can be used to predict the strength of circular columns and beam-columns made of HSB600 high strength steel.

  • Structural tests were performed to investigate the structural performance of concrete-filled steel tube column using different strength steels in their flange and web with high-strength steel HSA800 and mild steel SM490, respectively. The test parameters included the strength of column flange and infill concrete, and effect of concrete infill. Connection between different grade steels were welded using the electrode appropriate for mild steel and verified its performance. To evaluate the behavior of test specimens, eccentric loading tests were performed and the results were compared with the prediction by current design codes. Axial load and moment carrying capacity of test specimens increased with the yield strength of compression flange and weld fracture occurred after the specimen shows full strength. The prediction result for axial load-bending moment relationship and effective flexural stiffness gave good agreement with the test result.

  • This paper is a part of a research aimed at the verification of basic design rules of high-strength concrete columns. A total of 32 column specimens were tested to investigate structural behavior and strength of eccentrically loaded reinforced concrete tied columns. Main variables included in this test program were concrete compressive strength. steel amount, eccentricity, and slenderness ratio. The concrete compressive strength varied from 356 kg/$cm^2$ to 951 kg/$cm^2$ and the longitudinal steel ratios were between 1.13 % and 5.51 %. Test results of column sectional strength are compared with the results of analyses by ACI rectangular stress block, trapezoidal stress block, and modified rectangular stress block. Axial force-moment-curvature analysis is also performed for predicting axial load-moment strength and compared with the test results. The ACI rectangular stress block provides over-estimated column strengths for the lightly reinforced high strength column specimens. The calculated strengths by moment-curvature analyses are highly affected by $k_3$ values of the concrete stress-strain curve. Observed failure mode. concrete ultimate strain, and stress block parameters are discussed.

  • In this paper, we proposed the standard test specification for safety and function of hiking stick for the elderly. We have concluded nine factors representing specification of hiking stick through analysis of hiking patents and research papers, products survey of business market, case studies for damaged hiking stick and expert surveys. To test the factors, we designed three different kinds of apparatus to examine twist resistance, stick and tip durability and stick straightness. The sample of hiking sticks purchased from market based on Naver sales ranking top to fifteenth. As a result, we concluded six-standard test specification based on eccentric load, adjustable parts load, hand strap load, basket load, tip load and pull load of hiking stick.

  • On the basis of the strain-based shear strength model developed in the previous study, a strength model was developed to predict the direct punching shear capacity and unbalanced moment-carrying capacity of interior and exterior slab-column connections. Since the connections are severely damaged by flexural cracking, punching shear was assumed to be resisted mainly by the compression zone of the slab critical section. Considering the interaction with the compressive normal stress developed by the flexural moment, the shear strength of the compression zone was derived on the basis of the material failure criteria of concrete subjected to multiple stresses. As a result, shear capacity of the critical section was defined according to the degree of flexural damage. Since the exterior slab-column connections have unsymmertical critical sections, the unbalanced moment-carrying capacity was defined according to the direction of unbalanced moment. The proposed strength model was applied to existing test specimens. The results showed that the proposed method predicted the strengths of the test specimens better than current design methods.

  • An alternative design method for interior flat plate-column connections subjected to punching shear and unbalanced moment was developed. Since the slab-column connections are severely damaged by flexural cracking before punching shear failure, punching shear was assumed to be resisted mainly by the compression zone of the slab critical section. Considering the interaction with the flexural moment of the slab, the punching shear strength of the compression zone was evaluated based on the material failure criteria of concrete subjected to multiple stresses. The punching shear strength was also used to evaluate the unbalanced moment capacity of the slab-column connections. For verification, the proposed strength model was applied to existing test specimens subjected to direct punching shear or combined punching shear and unbalanced moment. The results showed that the proposed method predicted the strengths of the test specimens better than current design methods in ACI 318 and Eurocode 2.

  • This paper's objective is to evaluate the experimental behavior of gap N-joints made of cold-formed, square, hollow steel sections, with a connection plate as a tension member. The principal parameters for testing included the ratio of chord width to thickness, the ratio of brace width to chord width, eccentric ratio, the shape of the compression member, the branch angle, and the stiffening plate of the chord flange. The strength and failure mode were examined through the test for the gap N-joint, consisting of several parameters. Based on the results of the test, the gap N-joints were determined according to the capacity preceding the displacement of the tension, regardless of the width ratio, and the split failure mode-connected surface for a chord in joints. The strength of the gap N-joints increased proportionally as the $2\gamma$(B/T) ratio decreased, and as the width ratio(${\beta}$) of branch to chord increased. Particularly, $2\gamma$(B/T) decreased as the capacity of gap N-joint increased. The results of the test were summarized for the capacity, initial stiffness, ductility, and change of the failure mode of each gap N-joint.
