This study empirically analyzes the relationship between market structure and R&D activities. Especially, the outcome of R&D activities could be imitated or plagiarized by nearby competitors before it is protected legally through patenting, it would work as a club good and its market structure need to be defined at the geographic level of city, county or ward rather than the whole nation. According to the regression results of this study using Survey on Technology Statistics of Small- and Medium-Sized Firms, individual firms' R&D investment is more active when market structure of area(city, county, or ward)-industry(two-digit industry) is monopolistic or oligopolistic rather than competitive. However, as the variable representing market structure is redefined over a geographic scope of 16 metropolitan areas or provinces, 6 regions, or the whole nation, the relationship between market structure and R&D activities seems to become weak. Moreover, when the R&D expenditure is divided by its source, more active R&D spending in a less competitive market is observed as long as it is procured by internal fund of the firm in question.
This study is a part of the research on measuring and developing the creativity of college students, especially of engineering college students. This study was done in the class of imaginative design engineering which was a creativity training program integrated with engineering majors, including idea generation skills, creative problem solving, patent applications, design, manufacturing and marketing. Participants in this program were 75 freshman strudetns in engineering college. The achievements in this program were measured by the figural form of TTCT(Torrance Tests of Creative Thinking), as well as MBTI(Myers-Briggs Type Indicator). The results are as follows. First, TTCT scores of the participants in imaginetive design engineering increased significantly. Second, type indicator scores of MBTI varied significantly, to the directions of extrovert, feeling, and perception. Therefore, according to the results of this study, we can conclude the imaginative design engineering class had significant positive effects on the creativity of the engineering students.
The standard is a nation's one of the most important industrial issues that improve the social and economic efficiency and also the basis of the industrial development and trade liberalization. This research analyzes the enactment and the utilization of Korean industrial standards(KS) of various industries. This paper examines Korean industries' KS utilization status based on the KS possession, enactments and inquiry records. First, we implement multidimensional scaling method to visualize and group the KS possession records and the nation's institutional issues. We develop several hypothesis to find the decision factors of how each group's KS possession status impacts on the standard enactment activities of similar industry sectors, and analyzes the data by implementing regression analysis. The results show that the capital intensity, R&D activities and sales revenues affect standardization activities. It suggests that the government should encourage companies with high capital intensity, sales revenues to lead the industry's standard activities, and link the policies with the industry's standard and patent related activities from R&D. Second, we analyze the impacts of each KS data's inquiry records, the year of enactments, the form and the industrial segment on the utilization status by implementing statistical analysis and decision tree method. The results show that the enactment year has significant impact on the KS utilization status and some KSs of specific form and industrial segment have high utilization records despite of short enactment history. Our study suggests that government should make policies to utilize the low-utilized KSs and also consider the utilization of standards during the enactment processes.
Although the investment scale and the qualitative performance of national research and development project in Korea have been increased, the practical use of the performance is still insignificant. Thus it becomes more important to understand and analyze factors that affect commercialization of national R&D project. Most of prior literatures have done with qualitative research rather than data-based analysis; however, mostly focusing on influential factors in between R&D inputs and outputs and it remains as limitation. The important key to avoid the limitation in this study is using data-based analysis of factors (such as research performance, types of research institution, scale of the government fund, project structure, competency in the researcher, and technical field) that affect commercialization with the case of the Competitiveness Enhancement in Material and Component Industries. As a result, patents performance, scale of the government fund, and technical field turned out to be influential factors of commercialization. On the other hand, research performance, types of research institution, project structure, and competency in the researcher did not show statistically significant results. To increase commercialization in project scheme, process, and assessment of national R&D project, including the Competitiveness Enhancement in Material and Component Industries project, it is required to design scientific research with better understanding of causal relationship.
In the Fourth Industrial Revolution era, global powers are enhancing R&D support to leverage innovations like AI, IoT, and big data for productivity gains and structural economic and social reforms. Yet, the declining R&D budget growth rate and the forecasted sharp cut in South Korea's R&D budget in 2024 highlight the critical need for national R&D performance management system discussions. Diverging from previous studies focused on quantitative analysis of performance determinants, this research utilizes fuzzy set qualitative comparative analysis(fsQCA) to explore the interplay of factors affecting research institutions' outcomes comprehensively. Analyzing data from 2018 to 2022, it examines three outcome types of research institutions, identifying factor combinations crucial for success. By pinpointing these factors' configurations, the study offers institution-specific performance enhancement guidelines and insights for national R&D policy management and performance evaluation efficiency.

Korean Economy has been developed by the Korean Government's Support for the Large-sized Firms. This Government Policy causes the Polarization between Large-sized and Micro-sized Firms Aggravated. Micro-sized Firms are distributed over the Whole Industry Area, and can also cause the Economic Crisis If They are crashed down. Therefore Government Policy for the Micro-sized Manufacturing Industry is very Important Issue. This Paper Focused on the Analysis of Current Status for the Shoes Micro Manufacturing Industry. For the Effective Analysis, This Paper uses the Statistical Data Open to the Public and also conducts the Survey for the Micro-sized Firms in Busan. Statistical Program is used for Analyzing the Collected Data and the Major Findings are as Follows. First, Shoes Industry is led by the Micro and Small & Medium sized Firms rather than the Large-sized. And the Micro-sized Firms are getting the High Rate among the Whole Shoes Industry. Busan is heavily populated Area as the Origin of Shoes Industry. Second, even though Most of the Owner of the Micro-sized Firms have the High Technology Skill Level, Worker's Aging Phenomenon gets Worse and causes the Technology Handing down to the Next Generation Difficult. Third, Because the Factory Facility of the Micro-sized Firms is Dirt and Unstable, the Modernized Manufacturing Infrastructure such as the Apartment Factory Facility is Necessary. Forth, as the Micro-sized Firms which have the Intangible Asset such as Patent is Few, the Government Policy for Encouraging the Patent Application is strongly Needed. Fifth, Entrepreneurship and Collaboration Mind between Micro-sized Firms are Lacked, so Establishment of the Cooperative Union is required. Finally, the Effort for the Systemic Planning for the Management is lacked, and the Introduction of the Management Innovation is strongly needed. The Limitation and Future Research Direction is also discussed.
The purpose of this study is to investigate the impact of university knowledge capital on the local business activity in the Korean local governments in the year 2015. We found that the increase of the standard deviation of university patent, scientific publications, incumbent firms, and industrial property rights raised the number of new knowledge-intensive firms to 15%, 11%, 54%, and 22%, respectively, in the local economy. In addition, the coefficient which reflects the interaction effects of the knowledge capital between universities and local industries was significant in the given area in the year. On the other hand, in the control variables, the coefficients for the size of local government, population density, and percentage of 20s~40s out of the total population in the local government were significant, showing above 90% level except for the variable of the distance between a local government and Seoul. In particular, when the knowledge capital of the university and industry coexists, the synergistic effect which has influence on the foundation of knowledge-intensive firms was meaningful despite the small scale, and these two types of knowledge capital could be complementary in creating new knowledge-intensive firms in the Korean local economy.

This study attempted to identify the relationship between the investment determinants of accelerators and investment performance through empirical analysis. Through literature review, four dimensions and 12 measurement items were extracted for investment determinants, which are independent variables, and investment performance was adjusted to the cumulative amount of subsequent investment based on previous studies. Performance data from 594 companies selected by TIPS from 2017 to 2019, which are relatively reliable and easy to secure data, were collected, and the subsequent investment cumulative attraction amount, which is a dependent variable, was hypothesized through multiple regression analysis three years after the investment. As a result of the study, 'industrial experience years' in the characteristics of founders, 'market size', 'market growth', 'competitive strength', and 'number of patents' in the characteristics of products and services had a significant positive (+) effect. The impact of independent variables on dependent variables was most influenced by the competitive strength of market characteristics, followed by the number of years of industrial experience, the number of patents, the size of the market, and market growth. This was different from the results of previous studies conducted mainly on qualitative research methods, and in most previous studies, the characteristics of founders were the most important, but the empirical analysis results were market characteristics. As a sub-factor, the intensity of competition, which was the subordinate to the importance of previous studies, had the greatest influence in empirical analysis. The academic significance of this study is that it presented a specific methodology to collect and build 594 empirical samples in the absence of empirical research on accelerator investment determinants, and created an opportunity to expand the theoretical discussion of investment determinants through causal research. In practice, the information asymmetry and uncertainty of startups that accelerators have can help them make effective investment decisions by establishing a systematic model of experience-dependent investment determinants.

Unicorn companies are attracting attention around the world as they are recognized for their high corporate value in a short period of time as an innovative business models. Their growth process presents good lessons for the startup ecosystem and have a positive impact on national economic development and job creation. However, previous studies related to unicorn companies are focused on 'event studies' and 'case studies' such as characteristics of founders, environmental factors, business models and success/failure cases of companies already recognized as unicorns rather than a multifaceted approach. The occurrence of unicorn companies and Macroscopic analysis of related factors is lacking. Against this background, this study are considering the characteristics of unicorns examined through previous research and the current status unicorns with a high proportion of technology companies, the purpose was to analyze the impact of the country's technological competitiveness, such as 'technology human resource index', 'R&D index', and 'technology infrastructure index', on the increase in unicorn companies. For statistical analysis, data published by various international organizations, the Bank of Korea, and Statistics Korea from 2017 to 2020 and unicorn company data compiled by CB Insights were used as panel data for 44 countries to be tested by multiple regression analysis. As a result of the study, it was confirmed that the number of science majors had a positive (+) effect on the increase of unicorn companies in the case of technology human resource index, and in the case of R&D index, the total amount of R&D investment had a positive (+) effect on the increase of unicorn companies, while the number of Triad Patents Families and the number of scientific and technological papers published had a negative (-) effect on the increase of unicorn companies. Finally, in the case of technology infrastructure index, it was confirmed that the number of the world's 500th-ranked universities had a positive (+) effect on the increase of unicorn companies. This study is the first to reveal the causal relationship between national technological competitiveness and unicorn company growth based on country-specific and time-series empirical data, which were insufficiently covered in previous studies. and compared to the UN's ranking of the global industrial competitiveness index and the OECD's total R&D investment by country, Korea is considered to have technological and growth potential, while the number of unicorn companies driving growth as leaders of the innovative economy is relatively small, so the research results can be used when establishing policies to discover and foster unicorn companies in the future.
Various innovation theories, such as innovation system, innovation cluster, triple helix model, are different in their focus. However they all emphasize the interaction between innovation actors in order to generate, diffuse, and appropriate technological innovations successfully. This study analyzes how the interaction of innovation actors in Daedeok Innopolis has been changed since the introduction of innovation cluster policy like the designation of Daedeok Innopolis. Based on the analysis of survey data, Innopolis statistics, and patent joint-application data, we come to the conclusions that the Daedeok Innopolis has characteristics of multi-level governance structure, in which innovation cluster, i.e. Daedeok Innopolis, regional innovation system, and national innovation system directly overlap under the framework of innovation system. In addition, from the perspectives of triple helix model, we are able to verify that the inter-domain interactions between innovation actors, such as tri-lateral network, have been constantly increased in the Daedeok Innopolis. Based on our analysis, we identify some policy suggestions in order to strengthen the competitiveness of the Daedeok Innopolis as well as other innovation clusters in Korea. First, the network activities between innovation actors within innovation cluster should be strengthened based on the geographical accessibility. Second, private intermediate organizations should be established and their roles should be extended. Third, the entrepreneurial activities of universities within innovation cluster should be strengthened. In other words, the roles of universities within the Innopolis should be activated. Finally, the government should provide relevant policy supports to activate the interactions between innovation actors within innovation cluster.
