  • The study examines the quiet pavement using fine-size aggregates and warm-mix technique to reduce traffic noise. In order to evaluate the quality of pavement, mix design and laboratory tests were carried out. Test results showed that using 10mm aggregates can reduce the cantabro loss compared with 13mm aggregates due to increase contact area between aggregates. Mixing and compaction temperatures of warm mix quiet pavement should be determined by gyratory compactor test because it is used high viscosity asphalt binder. Using warm-mix additive could reduce compaction temperature by about $15^{\circ}C$. Noise measurement and permeability tests were conducted at the test road for evaluation of the field performance. All of quiet pavements meet the standard of permeability and have sufficient porosity. Noise reduction of the quiet pavement using fine-size aggregates is more effective than that using 13mm aggregates. In particular, the effect of noise reduction was noticeable at low speeds.

  • As the percentage of permeable ground is reduced due to the increased impermeable roads of major cities, a heat island phenomenon can be dominantly observed, resulting in increased temperature. In addition, rainfall that would have been naturally absorbed and retained by the permeable ground is overflowed due to large volumes of run-off water, resulting in more sewer failures and increased erosion. In terms of permeable pavement system, block paving has been used anywhere as well as provides many years of service. The permeable block paving is an effective alternative to the more traditional asphalt or plain concrete for minor roads; furthermore, it looks a lot better than other pavements. In this study, the functional drainage evaluation of block paving was carried out, considering the usage of experimental sludge and wheel tracking test, in order to simulate the field condition of roads.

  • This paper presents a fundamental findings of the functional and structural performance of the porous asphalt concrete coated with MMA resin. To evaluate the structural performance, cantabro, wheel tracking, moisture sensitivity and indirect tensile fatigue tests are performed. The tests results show that the cantabro loss is reduced three times and fatigue resistance is significantly increased after the specimens are coated with MMA resin. However there are little changes in the rutting and moisture damage resistances before and after the coating. Air voids, permeability and BPT(British Pendulum Test) tests are conducted to study the functional performance. It is observed form the tests that the air voids and permeability are slightly decreased after the coating. However, the changes in the air voids and permeability are negligible. The skid resistance of the coated specimens is lower than reference specimens. However, the skid resistance is maintained beyond the level of the reference specimens when silica sands are chipped on top of the coated surface.

  • Generally, a parking lot is constructed using asphalt or concrete. Such materials are impermeable, which means that a parking lot will directly release pollutants to any nearby water system during a rainfall event. An increased quantity of nonpoint source pollutants harms the ecohydrological system and causes further environmental damage leading to dysfunctional water circulation systems. Therefore, there is an urgent need for the design and application of Low Impact Development (LID) systems that allow more effective prevention of water circulation problems and management of nonpoint source pollution. This study aims to support such efforts by analyzing a permeable paver parking lot constructed using one of the LID techniques and comparing it to a conventional one in terms of the concentration of pollutants, nonpoint source pollution load and runoff rainfall lag effects during a rainfall event; it could serve as a reference for the construction of permeable paver parking lots in the future.

  • The Voids in the Mineral Aggregate (VMA) within asphalt mixtures play a crucial role in defining the mixture's structural integrity, durability, and resistance to environmental factors. Accurate prediction and optimization of VMA are essential for enhancing the performance and longevity of asphalt pavements, particularly in varying climatic and environmental conditions. This study introduces a novel machine learning framework leveraging ensemble machine learning model for predicting VMA in asphalt mixtures. By analyzing a comprehensive set of variables, including aggregate size distribution, binder content, and compaction levels, our framework offers a more precise prediction of VMA than traditional single-model approaches. The use of advanced machine learning techniques not only surpasses the accuracy of conventional empirical methods but also significantly reduces the reliance on extensive laboratory testing. Our findings highlight the effectiveness of a data-driven approach in the field of asphalt mixture design, showcasing a path toward more efficient and sustainable pavement engineering practices. This research contributes to the advancement of predictive modeling in construction materials, offering valuable insights for the design and optimization of asphalt mixtures with optimal void characteristics.

  • Porous pavements are recommended as a Low-Impact Development (LID) method which is a strategy to develop a water cycle as close to a natural state as possible, and to solve the urban impervious surface problems. Porous pavements can yield a solution if it provides a more permeable surface with extra space to contain extra water from building roofs. But there are few applications in Korea because of a lack of recognition and experience. Highway engineers are mainly concerned about the infiltration of water into pavement structures. They worry about the weakening of the asphalt mixture and subgrade, and freezing during the winter season due to the infiltration of water. Meanwhile, hydrological experts doubt the effects of the amount of water to control during the flooding season, and environmental experts prefer a non-point pollution treatment system established beside highway. In this study, from reviewing the history and the body of literature about porous pavements, conclusions regarding the most advanced technologies were made. First, traditional thickness designs can be used for porous pavement, no extra distresses was found by weakening and freezing during the winter season. Second, hydrological design can be made by controlling the thickness of the pavement and the outlet of water. Third, the treatment efficiency of non-point pollution of porous pavements is not worse than any other method. Importantly, it's a more eco-friendly solution because of its lower requirement for de-icing agents.

  • Porous pavements can provide road users with beneficial characteristics such as skid resistance and surface water drainage under rainy condition, and they cause less tire-road noise than conventional hot mix asphalt(HMA) pavements. However, voids of porous pavements are easily clogged by road debris at early stages, which leads to frequent maintenance works. Therefore, this study focused on the way of minimizing void clogging in porous pavements. During mixture design, the quantity of coarse aggregate has been increased to form many straight void conduits (SVCs) in porous HMAs. These SVCs were found to be effective resisting the void clogging problems. Four different porous HMAs(19mm, 13mm, 10mm, and 8mm) were developed and placed on highway roads. Their performances were validated with field tests during the past four years.

  • The increment of impermeable land area due to widespread land development caused the adverse impact on urban disaster prevention because it could decrease the peak rate of runoff as well as increase the runoff and peak flow during rainy period. To date, little research has been conducted on the infiltration characteristics and quantitative analysis because of their highly dependence on construction method, paving material, surface permeability, and field condition. Hence, this study was performed to investigate the infiltration characteristics of runoff-reducing facilities according to the type of paving material, which were examined using experimental apparatus with varying paving material and rainfall intensity, and thus to provide fundamental research data for runoff-reducing infiltration facilities. In this study, the infiltration characteristics were examined under the rainfall intensity of 20, 30, 50, 80, 100, 200 mm/hr for a variety type of paving materials such as concrete, asphalt, sand, grassland, and permeable paving material. The infiltration rate for permeable paving material was observed to be more than 93% under the condition of less than 200 mm/hr of rainfall intensity. For the compacted earth and grassland, the ultimate infiltration rate was estimated to be about 13% to 67%. The permeable paving material was concluded to be the most appropriate one for the runoff-reducing infiltration facilities because it has more favorable advantages than others in the light of infiltration volume, disaster prevention, and river training.

  • In this study, in order to improve the mechanical properties and durability of asphalt mixtures, a modifier (CSM, Cationized Silicate Modifier) was applied to asphalt to derive optimal mixing ratio conditions. Design of asphalt mixture using modified asphalt binder was conducted, and moisture resistance and dynamic stability were evaluated for optimal mixing conditions. The evaluation results showed that it exceeded the standards stipulated in the relevant guidelines, and as a result of conducting a water permeability test on the optimal mixing condition, it was confirmed that impermeable performance was secured. As a result of examining the noise reduction performance through field test, a noise reduction performance of about 10 dB was secured compared to before paving. It will be necessary to secure reliability through continuous noise generation evaluation in the future.
