  • Purpose: The purpose of the Activation of Public Transportation by Analysis of Factors Influencing Satisfaction of Commuting Hours in the Metropolitan Area. Method: This study analyzed the factors affecting wide-area commuting time and satisfaction for office workers who perform wide-area commuting. Result: in the case of commuting satisfaction for wide-area commuting hours by region, commuting time satisfaction was relatively low in the metropolitan area as the average commuting time was high, and commuting time satisfaction was relatively high in the non-metropolitan area as the average commuting time was low. Conclusion: In the future, the government will establish or improve express railways and wide-area buses to reduce wide-area commuting time, and build urban highways to shorten passenger car use time, which will reduce commuting time, but qualitative indicators are more important. In other words, even if commuting time is long, life satisfaction increases, so quality of life is important, and it is necessary to improve commuting time satisfaction rather than simple indicators of commuting time, so both qualitative and quantitative aspects of commuting time need to be improved.

  • As the era of autonomous driving approaches, it is expected to have a significant impact on our lives. When autonomous driving cars emerge, it is necessary to develop an index that can evaluate autonomous driving cars as it enhance the productive value of the car by reducing the burden on the driver. This study analyzed how the autonomous driving era affects commuting time and commuting time satisfaction among office goers using a car in Gyeonggi-do. First, a nonlinear relationship (V) was derived for the commuting time and commuting time satisfaction. Here, the factors affecting commuting time satisfaction were analyzed through a binomial logistic model, centered on the sample belonging to the nonlinear section (70 minutes or more for commuting time), which is likely to be affected by the autonomous driving era. The analysis results show that the variables affected by the autonomous driving era were health, sleeping hours, working hours, and leisure time. Since the emergence of autonomous driving cars is highly likely to improve the influencing variables, long-distance commuters are likely to feel higher commuting time satisfaction.

  • We examine the major factors governing the travel time for commuters in the Seoul metropolitan area. To identify the determinants of the commuting time for residents with jobs in the city centre, a multiple regression analysis is performed using household survey data. The results reveal that commuters in Seoul place higher value on time than on living space. Thus, we may conclude that recent trends in income segregation in Seoul are not the result of increased housing demand but of dispersed jobs and better amenities offered in the suburbs.

  • This study focused on Japanese families engaging in childrearing to discover changes in their daily lives, such as in the role division between husband and wife and hours spent on housework and childcare, caused by the unexpected crisis of COVID-19. An empirical analysis attempted to determine whether changes in the working environment, such as working and commuting hours, affected the role division between husband and wife, as well as housework and childcare hours spent. The data analyzed were extracted from the 2021 "3rd Survey on Changes in Lifestyle Awareness and Behavior Due to the Impact of COVID-19" conducted by the Japanese Cabinet Office. A total of 983 couples aged 20 or older, living with their spouse, having at least one child under the age of 18, and both employed were selected. The analysis results were as follows: First, the division of roles between husband and wife changed in the direction of increasing the husband's role in housework and childrearing. Second, the decrease in working and commuting hours increased the husband's role. Third, housework and childcare hours were more clearly related to changes in the working environments of husbands and wives than to changes in role division between husband and wife. In conclusion, changes in men's working and commuting hours had a greater impact on role division, as well as housework and childrearing hours in the family, than changes in women's working and commuting hours. In the future, an analysis that considers labor market factors is necessary.

  • The purpose of this study is to identify the factors that influence commuting patterns of Seoul residents after the construction of new towns. To find the determinants of commuting time for residents with jobs in Seoul, a multiple regression analysis is performed using household survey data. Overall, the findings present a plausible picture of the spatial configuration in Seoul, where younger residents with growing families move out to the suburbs to become owners of apartment homes, and drive or use mass transportation to get to work. As they get older and wealthier, other things being equal, they gravitate towards the city centre in order to reduce the time wasted on commuting. While their occupations appear to play little role, it seems that the entrapment hypothesis on female workers is supported as well. In addition, excess commuting is still prevalent due to jobs-housing mismatch in Seoul, although it is less severe than in the past. Based on these results, planners should devise better strategies to solve the inefficient commuting problem.

  • This study aims to test the spatial mismatch hypothesis by exploring the relationship between income and commuting time in Seoul, Korea. For this purpose, we analyze the commuting times of individuals who commute to Seoul, using the data for the metropolitan household survey. We employed a hierarchial linear model(HLM) to capture the effects of both individual attributes and regional attributes, and their interactions. The results show that the commuting time decreases with household income controlling for the regional attributes, and the effect of income increases with the housing price of the location of a commuter's firm. This implies that the spatial mismatch holds for Seoul as follows: Lower personal income and housing affordablility extend individuals' commuting times, and the destinations' characteristics such as housing type and land use also have impacts on commuting time. These results have some policy implications for achieving social equity in terms of spatial structure of the city.

  • This study is aimed at identifying the association of commuting behavior with health for workers in the Korea Capital Region. The study surveyed a total of 1,285 commuters whose major work is deskwork-oriented; the authors obtained their health status on body form, blood pressure and cholesterol as well as their commuting behavior. The measures of the latter were comprised of a main commuting mode, a use term, out-of-vehicle time, total travel time, transit transfer, and alternative mode in order to identify the amount of physical activity obtained through commuting behavior. The results indicate that non-automobile commuters are positively associated to improve their health status, as compared to car commuters. Specifically, bus commuters and walkers had decreased weight, blood pressure, and cholesterol, while rail commuters are only correlated to relieving cholesterol. In addition, the measures for health are improved as out-of-vehicle time increases. For commuters who drive to work, their health status tends to be worse.

  • Long-distance commuting is a problem as people living in Gyeonggi-Incheon contitue to commute to Seoul in the Seoul metropolitan area. To solve this problem, policies in the region are aiming for a self-sufficient zone formation plan and a compact city. However, urban problems caused by such long-distance commuting continue. This appears to be due to excessive density and Seoul-dependent networks. However, existing studies have focused on individual cities despite the importance of inter-city interactions, and had limitations in not considering the characteristics of the Seoul-dependent networks. Therefore, the purpose of this study is to empirically analyze the effect of the compactness on commuter travels by comprehensively considering the interactions between cities within the region using multiple regression. As a result of the analysis, it was found that that commuting efficiency increases when a network of more than a certain size is formed, and the results imply that policies should focus on fostering network centers in Incheon and Gyeonggi regions, which are outside the metropolitan area, and consider to expand the transportation networks at the regional level.
