  • This paper is intended to solve the technical problem that fails in large-capacity induction motor starting due to serious voltage drop during starting period. One induction motor that is established already can reach in steady-state using reactor starting method but the voltage magnitude of PCC (point of common coupling) has dropped down a little. When the same capacity induction motor is installed additionally in the PCC, where the existing induction motor is operating, voltage drop becomes more serious by starting of additional induction motor. As a result, the additional induction motor fails in starting. Therefore, voltage compensation method is proposed so that all of two induction motors can be started completely. First, modeling technique is described in order to implement starting characteristics of large induction motor. And then, this paper proposes strategic starting scheme by proper voltage compensation that use no-load transformer tap control (NLTC) and step voltage regulator (SVR) for starting of two large induction motors successfully and improving the feeding network voltage profile during the starting period. The induction motor discussed in this paper is the pumped induction motor of 2500kVA capacity that is operating by KOWACO (Korea Water Resources Corporation). Modeling and simulation is conducted using PSCAD/EMTDC software.

  • The wound induction motor can provide high starting torque and reduced starting current simultaneously by inserting large resistor externally when starting. And this technique is one of the well known methods among the induction motor starting methods and generally used for heavy load starting such as crane and cement factories. The conventional PI controller has been widely used in industrial application due to the simple control algorithm and is generally used for control of current torque, position, and speed for the wound induction motor drive system. However, the conventional control system for wound induction motor may result in poor performance because sensors have to be used but are often limited by the environmental condition. Recently, to overcome these problems, many sensorless vector control methods for the wound induction motor have been studied. This paper presents a MRAS method for sensorless vector control of the wound induction motor drive. In the conventional MRAS method, in low frequency, the stator resistance variation may result in poor performance. Therefore, this paper presents a MRAS method with stator and rotor resistance tuning for sensorless vector control of the wound induction motor to overcome several shortages of the conventional MRAS caused by parameter variation and to enhance the robustness of the sensorless vector control. The validity and effectiveness of the proposed method is verified through digital simulation.

  • The respiratory tract is an essential part of the respiratory system involved in the process of respiration. However, if stenosis occurs, it interferes with breathing and can even lead to death. Asthma is a typical example of a reversible cause of airway narrowing, and the number of patients suffering from acute exacerbation is steadily increasing. Therefore, it is important to detect airway narrowing early and prevent the patient's condition from worsening. Optical coherence tomography (OCT), which has high resolution, is suitable for observing the microstructure of tissues. In this study we developed an endoscopic OCT system. We combined a 1300-nm OCT system with a servo motor, which can rotate at a high speed. A catheter was pulled back using a linear stage while imaging with 360° rotation by the motor. The motor was selected considering various requirements, such as torque, rotational speed, and gear ratio of pulleys. An ex vivo rabbit tracheal model was used as a sample, and the sample and catheter were immobilized by acrylic structures. The OCT images provided information about the structures of the mucosa and submucosa. The difference between normal and stenosed parts in the trachea was confirmed by OCT. Furthermore, through a three-dimensional (3-D) reconstruction process, it was possible to identify and diagnose the stenosis in the 3-D image of the airway, as well as the cross-sectional image. This study would be useful not only for diagnosing airway stenosis, but also for realizing 3-D imaging.

  • This paper presents the verified results from the examination of the control algorithm, logic composition, and vehicle condition of the engine that has been adapted for DME fuel. It introduces the development process of the control structure and the logic control based on control map and auto-code generation, and finally verifies the reliability and performance of the overall control. The control structure largely consists of the injection control part that implements driver demand into an engine net torque and the air control system part that satisfies characteristics of exhaust gas and power performance. The control logic is designed with feedforward and feedback control for each of its control functions for an enhanced response. Moreover, the control map of the feedforward controller is created by the use of an engine model created by test data of mass product diesel engine, and it was subsequently calibrated in the test process of the engine and vehicle state. A test mode was completed by attaching the developed controller to the vehicle, and a reduction in gas emission is confirmed by the calibration of EGR, VGT, and injection times.

  • Hydrodynamic aspects on three-dimensional effects were investigated in this study for simple and convenient conversion of tidal stream energy using a Vertical-Axis Turbine (VAT). Numerical approach was made to reveal the differences of flow physics between 2-D estimation and rigorous 3-D simulation. It was shown that the 3-D effects were dominant mainly due to the variation of tip vortices around the tip region of rotor blade, causing the loss of lift for steadily translating hydrofoil and the reduction of torque for rotating turbine blade. The 3-D effect was found to be rather prominent for the typical VATs considered in this paper. Simple and yet efficient 2-D approach with the correction of its three-dimensionality was also proposed for practical design and analysis of VAT.

  • The rheology of highly concentrated polymer bonded explosive (PBX) simulant was studied. An energy material, polyethylene plastomer (Exact$^{TM}$) having similar properties to poly(BAMO-AMMO) was selected as a binder. Dechlorane with similar properties to RDX (Research Department eXplosive) was chosen as a filler. Mixing behavior in a batch melt mixer was investigated. During mixing a large amount of heat of viscous dissipation was generated and a continuous decrease in torque was observed when the filler content was above 70 v%. It was believed due to wall slip phenomena. From the SEM images, the fillers were well dispersed and the effect of mixing condition affected slightly on the dispersion. Owing to distinct shear thinning behavior of the suspensions, measuring viscosity of highly filled suspensions was possible in a high shear rate capillary rheometer though it was impossible even in a low shear rate plateplate rheometer.

  • Most cars today use electronic control to control the state of the engine to achieve optimum performance. This study developed a device for maintaining fault diagnosis and optimal vehicle status by displaying the engine information of a car on the screen in real time using can communication. This system displays information generated from the engine to the driver in real time such as engine intake and exhaust temperature, current battery voltage, tire pressure, RPM, DPF collection amount, torque, and horsepower through the OBD2 socket. You can check immediately. It can help you to drive safely by measuring tire pressure and displaying it on the screen, and it provides a mode to set the shift timing to suit your taste. In particular, in the case of diesel engine cars, the problems caused by smoke can adversely affect the performance and environmental pollution. Therefore, the system was developed to display the DPF collection amount on the system screen to prevent environmental pollution and to manage the vehicle efficiently.

  • As the performance of engines improves, the temperature of engines is increasing, resulting in a high piston temperature. An excessively high piston temperature may result in torque drop or engine failure. An oil jet is used to reduce the piston temperature. In this study, to monitor the effect of oil jet, a templug was used to measure the piston temperature. A templug is a kind of sensor and the hardness of the templug changes according to the piston temperature. Using a templug, the maximum temperature of the piston was measured with and without an oil jet. The piston temperature was lowered using the oil jet. The highest temperature region changed from the center crown to the front/rear area. In addition, the temperature difference between the highest and lowest regions became smaller.

  • In this study the possibility of hydrogen as a fuel in a small-sized two-stroke SI (Spark ignition) engine was investigated. For this purpose, experimental setup including an engine, a dynamometer, equipments for hydrogen and lubricant oil supply was prepared. And then preliminary experiments for the hydrogen-fueled engine combustion were conducted. In the case of hydrogen-fueled engines comparing to gasoline backfire occurs when the excess air ratio is lower than a specific value. This can cause engine power reduction and damage to the engine parts. The engine was controlled to operate at lean conditions to prevent backfire. Through the control of excess air ratio, the maximum engine brake power output of 3 kW was achieved in a 210 cc engine, while it was 6 kW in case of gasoline fuel.

  • The aim of this study was to measure the initial dynamic modulus changes of light cured composites using a custom made rheometer. The custom made rheometer consisted of 3 parts: (1) a measurement unit of parallel plates made of glass rods, (2) an oscillating shear strain generator with a DC motor and a crank mechanism, (3) a stress measurement device using an electromagnetic torque sensor. This instrument could measure a maximum torque of 2Ncm, and the switch of the light-curing unit was synchronized with the rheometer. Six commercial composite resins [Z-100 (Z1), Z-250 (Z2), Z-350 (Z3), DenFil (DF), Tetric Ceram (TC), and Clearfil AP-X (CF)] were investigated. A dynamic oscillating shear test was undertaken with the rheometer. A certain volume ($14.2\;mm^3$) of composite was loaded between the parallel plates, which were made of glass rods (3 mm in diameter). An oscillating shear strain with a frequency of 6 Hz and amplitude of 0.00579 rad was applied to the specimen and the resultant stress was measured. Data acquisition started simultaneously with light curing, and the changes in visco-elasticity of composites were recorded for 10 seconds. The measurements were repeated 5 times for each composite at $25{\pm}0.5^{\circ}C$. Complex shear modulus G*, storage shear modulus G', loss shear modulus G" were calculated from the measured strain-stress curves. Time to reach the complex modulus G* of 10 MPa was determined. The G* and time to reach the G* of 10 MPa of composites were analyzed with One-way ANOVA and Tukey's test ($\alpha$ = 0.05). The results were as follows. 1. The custom made rheometer in this study reliably measured the initial visco-elastic modulus changes of composites during 10 seconds of light curing. 2. In all composites, the development of complex shear modulus G* had a latent period for $1{\sim}2$ seconds immediately after the start of light curing, and then increased rapidly during 10 seconds. 3. In all composites, the storage shear modulus G" increased steeper than the loss shear modulus G" during 10 seconds of light curing. 4. The complex shear modulus of Z1 was the highest, followed by CF, Z2, Z3, TC and DF the lowest. 5. Z1 was the fastest and DF was the slowest in the time to reach the complex shear modulus of 10 MPa.
