Study on Optimal Control of Stochastic Invasive Species and Infectious Disease (확률적 확산모형을 이용한 외래종과 전염성 질병의 최적제어에 관한 연구)

  • The problem of invasive species has been recently emerged as one of complicated issues due to increasing globalisation and its consequence of species immigrations. Since in most cases of invasive species it is less likely to fully eradicate them through human efforts, it is often interested in reducing the possibility of ecological disaster caused by the invasive species. This paper provides an optimal control model to minimize such possibility while allowing the stochastic nature of biological growth of the invasive species. Conditions under which the partial eradication effort is optimal are derived. Simple numerical illustration is provided using H1N1 data which is categorized as an invasive disease in microorganism level.

Demonstration of the second intermediate hosts of Clinostomum complanatum in Korea (새인두흡충 제2중간숙주의 발견)

  • A species of metacercariae recovered from the fresh-water fish, collected from Kaumji (Pond), Kaechonji (Pond) and Ssanggyechon (River), Uisong-gun, Kyongsangbuk-do, Korea, was identified as Clinostomum compzcnatum by morphological observation and experimental infection to chicks. The excysted metacercariae, tongue-shaped and progenetic, were 3.28-4.27 mm in length and 0.94-1.46 mm in width. The adult flukes recovered from the chicks four days after infection were 4.20-4.86 mm long and 1.14-1.49 mm wide. Twelve species of the fresh-water fish were found to be infected with the metacercariae. The infection rate ranged from 1.6% (Zacco temminkii) to 88.9% (Acheilognathus rhombec and Microphwsogobio voluensis) . The intensity was highest in Cnrqssius curatus (13.0/fish infected) and the abundance (relative densityl was highest in A. rhombea (7.8/fish examined). This survey demonstrated for the first time the source of human infection by C. complnnntum in Korea.

  • This study produced the serious game based of Sacheonwang for the smart phone. The popularization of smart phone has expanded the contents market. However the game content made of various Korean traditional cultures is just few. According to this problem, it considered Sacheonwang (Dongbang Jigukcheonwang, Bukbang Damuncheonwang, Namban jungcheonwang, Seobang Gwangmokchoenwang) and tried to develop the serious game application of smart phone based on the Korean traditional culture. It modernized the 4 types of Sacheonwang analyzed the characteristics, and it was created to super deformed characters. It suggested the production and development of game using Sacheonwang character and the Buddhist image. This study looked at the contents of the Buddhist and developed the Buddhist civilization and applied on the game contents to extend Korean traditional culture and interact Korean traditional culture. This study, therefore, will develop the Korean traditional characters and the game content using the research of the Buddhist cultural elements.

Effect of Invasive Species on Reservoir Fish Communities: For Joongchosan and Bukchosan (외래종 배스가 저수지 어류군집에 미치는 영향: 중초산과 북초산 저수지를 대상으로)

  • In this study, we wanted to obtain the information of the ecological impact of alien species on native fish communities. The Ichthyofauna and fish community in Joongchosan Reservoir and Bukchosan Reservoir in Gunsan-si Korea were investigated over the period from March to October 2020. During the survey period, a total of 1,895 individuals representing eight species, five families, and four orders were caught in the Joongchosan Reservoir. In the Bukchosan Reservoir, a total of 171 individuals were caught, representing seven species, five families, and three orders. The dominant species and subdominant species of Joongchosan Reservoir were Pseudorasvora parva (661 individuals, RA: 34.7%), and Rhodeus ocellatus (660 individuals, RA: 34.7%). Conversely, Micropterus salmoides (77 individuals, RA: 45.0%), and Carassius auratus (60 individuals, RA: 35.1%), were the two most common species in the Bukchosan Reservoir. The community indices showed a dominance of 0.697, diversity of 1.483, evenness of 0.713, and species richness of 0.928 in the Joongchosan Reservoir. In comparison, the community indices in the Bukchosan Reservoir showed a dominance of 0.801, diversity of 1.304, evenness of 0.670, and species richness of 1.167. This study confirms that the number of native fishes and the associated community diversity have decreased due to the influence of Micropterus salmoides. This highlights the need for removal of alien species from reservoirs, while simultaneously preventing future introductions.

Stabilization of Heavy Metals using Ca-Citrate-Phosphate Solution: Effect of Soil Microorganisms (구연산/칼슘/인산염 용액을 이용한 토양 중금속 안정화: 토양 미생물이 미치는 영향)

  • A farming area located near an abandoned copper mine in GuPo-ri, Choongchung province is heavily contaminated with heavy metals such as As, Pb, Cd, Cu and Zn of which concentrations are higher than the values typically detected in Korean soil environment. In this work, laboratory and field studies were conducted to examine feasibility of using Ca-citrate-phosphate solution in stabilizing heavy metals in the polluted soils. In laboratory batch experiments with field soil, the addition of Ca-citrate-phosphate solution resulted in decrease of aqueous phase concentration of phosphate and improvement of heavy metal stabilization, compared to those for sterilized soil samples. This indicates that microbial uptake of phosphate may have provided positive effects on availability of phosphate toward heavy metal stabilization. According to microbial community analysis for the field experiment, the use of Ca-citrate-phosphate led to increased diversity of microbial populations, and strict anaerobic microorganisms such as Anaerofilum and Treponema became the most dominant populations in the solution-amended field experiments. These findings suggest that, when Ca-citrate-phosphate is used for heavy metal stabilization in soils, microbial processes may have important roles in improving the stabilization of heavy metals by providing reducing conditions to the treatment locations or/and by making phosphate available to heavy metal stabilization.

Symbiotic Potential of Bradyrhizobium japonicum Indigenous to Arable Land in Southern Parts of Korea (남부지방 농경지 Bradyrhizobium japonicum의 질소고정잠재능)

  • To obtain the basic information for suitable use of soybean-Bradyrhizobium japonicum symbiosis, on soybean cv. Danweonkong and Namhaekong the symbiotic potential of B. japonicum indigenous to plain upland (PU), plain paddy(PP), and mountainous upland(MU) soils in southern part of Korea were surveyed and discussed. Populations of B. japonicum in soils were the highest in MU soils with $5.7{\times}10^4\;cells/g.soil$ followed by PU with $5.0{\times}10^4$ and PP soils with $4.0{\times}10^3\;cells/g.soil$. Shoot dry weight at flowering stage and grain yields at harvesting stage, which mutually showed an high correlation $(P{\leqq}0.001)$, were high in the order of PU > MU > PP soil inocula. Amongst PU soils, Namhae acid Seonsan soils were prominent inocula for shoot dry weight and Kimhae for grain yields at P 0.05, respectively. In cases of nodule number and nodule mass surveyed at the flowering stage, shoot dry weight gave an higher correlation with the latter $(r=0.439^*)$ than the former $(r=0.383^*);$ grain yields with the former $(r=0.505^{**})$ that flue latter $(r=0.449^{**})$. In comparison with Namhaekong showed 1.7 and 1.4 fold higher values in shoot dry weight and grain yields per nodule mass, respectively.

An Evaluation of Plant Growth Promoting Activities and Salt Tolerance of Rhizobacteria Isolated from Plants Native to Coastal Sand Dunes (해안사구의 토착식물로부터 분리된 근권세균의 내염능과 식물성장촉진능 평가)

  • Coastal sand dunes are important for ecosystems due to the variety of rare species that can be found in this kind of habitat, and the beautiful landscapes they create. For environmental remediation, a potential strategy is phytoremediation using the symbiotic relationship of plants and microbes in the rhizosphere, which has proven ecologically sound, safe, and cost effective. Ninety-five colonies were isolated from the rhizosphere soil (RS) or rhizoplane (RP) of Rorippa islandica, Rumex crispus, Artemisia princeps var. orientalis, Lilium sp Stellaria media, and Gramineae. These colonies were then tested for plant growth promoting activities (PGPAs) such as 1-aminocyclopropane-1-carboxylic acid (ACC) deaminase activity, and siderphores synthesis ability. In addition, salt tolerance was evaluated at 4% and 8% salt concentrations. It was observed that amongst the test subjects about 50% of the strains had a high resistance to salinity. Many of them could produce indole-3-acetic acid (IAA) IAA (in RS 13.9% and in RP 7.6%), exhibited ACC deaminase activity (55.8% in RS and 36.6% in RP), and could synthesize siderphores (62.7% in RS and 50% in RP). Correlation coefficient analyses were carried out for the three kinds of plant growth promoting abilities (PGPA) and salt tolerance. A positive correlation was found between an ability to synthesize siderphores and ACC deaminase activity (r=0.605, p<0.037). Similarly, positive correlations were noted between salt tolerance and ACC deaminase activity (r=0.762, p<0.004, r=0.771), and salt tolerance and an ability to synthesize siderphores (r=0.771, p<0.003).

Characterization of CO2 Biomineralization Microorganisms and Its Mineralization Capability in Solidified Sludge Cover Soil in Landfill (매립지 복토용 슬러지 고화물내 이산화탄소 생광물화 고정균 분석 및 생광물화능 평가)

  • This study was performed to determine whether biomineralization microbes were actively present underneath landfill cover soil producing biocalcification. From this, various types of microbes were observed. Among them, two species were dominantly found; Bacillus megaterium and Alkaliphilus metalliredigens that were known as biominerlization bacteria. With those microbes, $CO_2$ was more highly consumed than without bacteria. In response, the calcium carbonate mineral was produced at 30% (wt) greater than that of the control. At the same time, TG-DTA was successfully used for quantification of $CO_2$ consumed forming calcium carbonate minerals resulting from biocalcification. It was decided that the presence of solidified sewage sludge cake utilized as a cover soil in the landfill could efficiently contribute to possible media adaptably and naturally sequestering $CO_2$ producing from the landfill.

Current Status and Future Perspectives of Natural Enemy Research in Korea: Analysis of Research Papers Published in the Korean Journal of Applied Entomology from 1990 to 2020 (우리나라 천적 연구의 현황 및 미래 전략: 1990년부터 2020년까지 한국응용곤충학회지 게재 논문 분석)

  • Since 1995, researches on natural enemies have been conducted extensively in Korea. Research papers on natural enemies published in the Korean Journal of Applied Entomology from 1990 to 2020 were 130, which is 8.4% of all published papers during the same period. In 1990s, most research papers study the searching and biological characteristics of natural enemies, whereas the proportion of research papers related to the field application using the developed natural enemies has been increasing since 2010s. A total of 37 excellent natural enemies have been developed including 24 indigenous and 13 introduced natural enemies. In addition, 28 kinds of booklets and/or manuals were developed for field application of natural enemies. Although successes in research and development have been achieved since that period, more researches on search for and/or introduction of excellent natural enemy suitable for the Korean cultivation environment, mass production technology that can reduce cost, and quality control program in producing and distributing natural enemy remain to be pursued in the future. Furthermore, there is a need to develop the technology that can be used in compatible way with natural enemies and other crop protection agents including synthetic insecticides.

Changes in Resident Soil Bacterial Communities in Response to Inoculation of Soil with Beneficial Bacillus spp. (유용한 바실러스의 토양 접종에 따른 토착 세균 군집의 변화)

  • Beneficial microorganisms are widely used in the forestry, livestock, and, in particular, agricultural sectors to control soilborne diseases and promote plant growth. However, the industrial utilization of these microorganisms is very limited, mainly due to uncertainty concerning their ability to colonize and persist in soil. In this study, the survival of beneficial microorganisms in field soil microcosms was investigated for 13 days using quantitative PCR with B. subtilis group-specific primers. Bacterial community dynamics of the treated soils were analyzed using 16S ribosomal RNA (rRNA) gene amplicon sequencing on the Illumina MiSeq platform. The average 16S rRNA gene copy number per g dry soil of Bacillus spp. was $4.37{\times}10^6$ after treatment, which was 1,000 times higher than that of the control. The gene copy number was generally maintained for a week and was reduced thereafter, but remained 100 times higher than that of the control. Bacterial community analysis indicated that Acidobacteria ($26.3{\pm}0.9%$), Proteobacteria ($24.2{\pm}0.5%$), Chloroflexi ($11.1{\pm}0.4%$), and Actinobacteria ($9.7{\pm}2.5%$) were abundant phyla in both treated and non-treated soils. In the treated soils, the relative abundance of Actinobacteria was lower, whereas those of Bacteroidetes and Firmicutes were higher compared to the control. Differences in total relative abundances of operational taxonomic units belonging to several genera were observed between the treated and non-treated soils, suggesting that inoculation of soil with the Bacillus strains influenced the relative abundances of certain groups of bacteria and, therefore, the dynamics of resident bacterial communities. These changes in resident soil bacterial communities in response to inoculation of soil with beneficial Bacillus spp. provide important information for the use of beneficial microorganisms in soil for sustainable agriculture.
