  • In this study, the behavior of breasting dolphin caused by the maximum wave height in the coastal area of Incheon has been investigated. The dynamic deflection, shear stress and moment of pile are analyzed using the coefficient of horizontal subgrade reaction resulted from loading tests for different DWT (Dead Weight Tonnage). The dynamic characteristics of pile in accumulated and dredged soils show almost the same pattern. It is shown that the resistance of dolphin to external load increases as the diameter of pile increases. The bettered pile dolphin is more than 10 times stable than the vertical pile type based on the study of dynamic characteristics of dolphin.

  • In this study, the prediction of landslide probability was performed to the study area located in ${\bigcirc}{\bigcirc}$ area of Muan-gun, Jeonnam Province around Honam railway using the computer program SHAPP ver 1.0 developed by a decision tree model. The soil samples were collected at total 8 points, and soil tests were performed to measure soil properties. The thematic maps of soil properties such as coefficient of permeability and void ratio were made on the basis of soil test results. The slope angle analysis of topography was performed using a digital map. As the prediction result of landslide probability, 435 cells among total 15,552 cells were predicted to be in the event of landslides. Therefore, the predicted area of occurring landslides may be $43,500m^2$ because the analyzed cell size was $10m{\times}10m$.

  • In this study, the prediction of slope hazard probability was performed to the study area located in Hadae-ri, Woochun-myeon, Hoengsung-gun, Gangwon Province around Youngdong express way using the computer program SHAPP ver 1.0 developed by a decision tree model. The soil samples were collected at total 10 points, and soil tests were performed to measure soil properties. The thematic maps of soil properties such as coefficient of permeability and void ratio were made on the basis of soil test results. The slope angle analysis of topography was performed using a digital map. As the prediction result of slope hazard probability, 2,120 cells among total 27,776 cells were predicted to be in the event of slope hazards. Therefore, the predicted area of occurring slope hazards may be $53,000m^2$ because the analyzed cell size was $5m{\times}5m$.

  • In this study, the soil characteristics are analyzed using the result of various soil tests as an object of the soil layer of natural slopes in landslides areas. Also, the relationship with landslides and interrelation with each soil properties are analyzed. The landslides in three areas with different geological condition are occurred due to heavy rainfall in same time. The geology of Jangheung area, Sangju area and Pohang area is gneiss, granite, and the tertiary sedimentary rock, respectively. However soil characteristics have a little differentiation to geological condition, the soils sampled from landslide area have higher proportion of fine particle and porosity, and lower density than those from non landslide area. In case of same geological condition, landslides are occurred in the terrain slope with high permeability. The permeability is mainly influenced by the soil characteristics such as particle size distribution, porosity, particle structure, and the geological origins such as weathering, sedimentary environment. The soil layer with high internal friction angle is more stable than that with low internal friction angle in all geological condition. The permeability is mainly influenced by effective particle size, coefficient of uniformity, coefficient of gradation, porosity, density and so on. Also, those have interrelation with each factor. These interrelations are similar in all study area. Meanwhile, in proportion as the void ratio and the porosity rises the permeability increases.

  • Comprehensive review on the determination of critical state parameters in sandy soils from standard triaxial testing was performed to facilitate the application of critical state soil mechanics to the shear behavior of sandy soils. First, semantic differences in literature were clarified, inferring that critical state should be considered as the ultimate state at large deformation. Second, the characteristics of critical state parameters were discussed, and also the uniqueness of critical state line and the sensitivity of quasi-steady state condition were verified in relation to initial state, fabric, loading condition, and drainage condition. Third, as an example, the critical state soil mechanics was applied to evaluate the post-liquefaction shear strength, i.e. the reliable ultimate shear strength in liquified soils, in terms of critical state parameters.

  • Many researches have been devoted to developing a model fur bridge scour analysis which can consider both of the erosive potential of flowing water and the relative ability of the soil to resist erosion. The scour rate apparatus that can quantify the erosion rate of the soil has been developed by virtue of the extensive efforts. The scour rate tests were performed on 3 types of the remolding clay samples using the scour rate apparatus. The erosion characteristics of the fine-grained soil samples according to the variation of the remolding loads are examined and the correlation between the soil properties and erosion rates is also analyzed. The results of the tests and analyses show that the soil properties, especially the dry unit weight and the shear strength of the soil have great influence on the erosion characteristics.

  • A probabilistic approach for evaluation of prediction of the strains using Lade's single surface constitutive model was employed, based on first-order approximate mean and variance. Several experiments such as isotropic compression and drained triaxial compression tests were conducted to examine the variabilities of soil parameters for Lade's model. By taking into account the results of the experimental data such as mean values and standard deviations of soil parameter's, a new probabilistic approach, which explains the uncertainty of computed strains, is applied. The magnitude of the COV for each parameter and the correlation coefficient between the two parameters can be effectively used for reducing the number of the parameters for the model. It is concluded that Lade's single surface constitutive model is surperior model for the prediction of the strain, because the COV of strains is under the "0.51".

  • The laboratory methods for compaction of soil (KSF 2312) and for moisture of soil (KSF 2306) in combination with the soil density in place by the sand-cone method (KSF 2311) are generally used for compaction control of soils. However, these methods have limitations in number of test and in accuracy. ]n addition, they are time-consuming. Therefore, they are not adequate for speedy control of embankment compaction in a project with huge amount of earthwork. The RI (Radioisotope) gauges for measurement of soil density and/or of soil moisture are widely used for the compaction control of soils in many countries. But in Korea, they have had a limited usage and available informations for uses of RI gauges are insufficient. Therefore, this study promotes efficient and safe use of RI gauges in geotechnical engineering. In this paper, fundamental aspects such as the priciples of RI gauges, gauge inspection techniques and the applicability and limitations of RI gauges for field usage were reviewed. And a new calibration curves suitable for the Korean soils were suggested.

  • Domestic design manuals provide various empirical relationships of design parameters of soils with N values from the Standard Penetration Test (SPT), which can be widely used in the basic design process as well as during the construction process. However, the currently used empirical relationships are based on the data from foreign countries and are rarely evaluated with domestic data with currently used site investigation techniques. Therefore, in this study, those empirical relationships and conversion tables are evaluated with the geotechnical information in the Integrated DB Center of National Geotechnical Information and new empirical relationships are newly proposed with the consideration of domestic geotechnical conditions.
