Genotype Frequencies of the Sex-Linked Feathering and Their Phenotypes in Domestic Chicken Breeds for the Establishment of Auto-Sexing Strains (자가성감별 계통 조성을 위한 국내 토종 닭의 깃털 조만성 양상과 유전자형 빈도)

  • The method of sexing based on differences in the rate of feather growth provides a convenient and inexpensive approach. The locus of feather development gene (K) is located on the Z chromosome and can be utilized to produce phenotypes that distinguish between the sexes of chicks at hatching. To establish the auto-sexing native chicken strains, this study analyzed the genotype frequency of the feathering in domestic chicken breeds. The method of classification of slow- and rapid-feathering chickens was also investigated. In the slow-feathering chicks, the coverts were either the same length or longer than the primary wing feathers at hatching. However, the rapid-feathering chicks had the primary wing feathers that were longer than the coverts. The growth pattern of tail feather also distinctively differed between the rapid- and slow-feathering chicks after 5-days. The accuracy of wing feather sexing was about 98% compared with tail sexing. In domestic chicken breeds, Korean Black Cornish, Korean Rhode Island Red, and Korean Native Chicken-Red had both dominant (K) and recessive ($k^+$) feathering genes. The other breeds of chickens, Korean Brown Cornish, Ogol, White Leghorn, Korean Native Chicken-Yellow, -Gray, -White and -Black had only the recessive feathering gene ($k^+$). Consequently, feather sexing is available using the domestic chicken breeds. Establishing the maternal stock with dominant gene (K-) and paternal stock with recessive gene ($k^+k^+$), the slow-feathering characteristic is passed from mothers to their sons, and the rapid-feathering characteristic is inherited by daughters from their fathers.

Comparison on Performance, Carcass Yield and Meat Quality Characteristics of Korean Indigenous Commercial Chicken (토종닭 실용계의 생산성, 도체율 및 육질특성 비교)

  • This study was conducted to compare performance, carcass yield, and meat quality of 4 Korean indigenous commercial chickens (Hanhyup 3: G, Sorae 1: V, Woorimatdak 1: S, Woorimatdak 2: W). A total of 384 chickens were divided into 4 treatments with 4 Korean indigenous commercial chickens, 6 repetitions per treatment, and 16 birds per treatment (♀ 8 birds, ♂ 8 birds). For 12 weeks, body weight was significantly higher in G and V breeds than S and W breeds (P<0.01), but body weight gain lower in S breed (P<0.05). Feed conversion ratio was significantly higher in W breed at 8~10 wk of age (P<0.05). There was no significant difference on livability among four treatments. Carcass yield and fresh meat ratio were highest in V breed at 12 wk of age (P<0.05). On breast meat, shear force was lower in G breed (P<0.05), and higher in male than in female (P<0.05). Lightness (L*) of breast meat was higher in female except V breed, and redness (a*) was significantly higher in breed G (P<0.05). Yellowness (b*) of breast meat was higher in G and V breeds, and higher in male than in female except breed G. In conclusion, G and V breeds showed superior performance, and S and W breeds showed superior meat quality.

Association between Paternal Telomere Length and Offspring Production Performance in Korean Native Chickens (토종 종계 부계의 텔로미어 길이와 자식의 생산능력 간의 연관성 분석)

  • The effect of paternal telomere length on reproductive performance, relationship between paternal and offspring telomere length, and association between paternal telomere length and offspring production performance were investigated in Korean native chickens. Using 22 paternal chickens and 329 offspring, the paternal reproductive performance such as fertility, embryo mortality, and hatchability, as well as the offspring production performance such as survival rate, body weight, and weight gain were analyzed. Telomere length was analyzed through quantitative fluorescence in situ hybridization using lymphocytes. No significant differences were observed in fertility, embryo mortality, and hatchability between paternal chicken telomere lengths (P<0.05). These results indicate that paternal telomere length had a weak negative correlation with fertility and embryonic death rate but a weak positive correlation with hatchability. The correlation coefficient between paternal telomere length and offspring survival rate was r=0.17 (P>0.05). The group of offspring with long paternal telomeres showed relatively poor growth performance. Moreover, a significant negative correlation was estimated between paternal telomere length and offspring growth performance (P<0.05). The correlation coefficient between paternal and offspring telomere lengths was r=0.075 (P>0.05). In conclusion, there was a weak association between paternal telomere length and reproductive performance, offspring survival rate, and offspring telomere length, respectively. However, paternal telomere length and offspring growth performance showed a negative relationship. Such results could be due to the re-extension of telomere length by telomere reprogramming in the early embryonic stage and the different degree of telomere shortening between individuals with increasing age after birth.

The Performance Test in Crossbreds of Korean Native Chickens for the Establishment of New Lines (새로운 계통 조성을 위한 한국 토종닭 교배 조합의 능력 검정)

  • The goal of this study was to evaluate the growth performance of crossbred strains using Korean native chicken (KNC). The data were collected from 2012 through 2013 at Poultry Science Division, National Institute of Animal Science, Korea. The number of chicks analyzed in this study was 375. Crossbred were (A) $R{\times}S$, (B) $D{\times}H$, (C) $D{\times}S$, (D) $C{\times}Y$ and (E) $Y{\times}H$. The fertility rates of strains were 94.9% in crossbred A, 91.9% in crossbred B, 91.8% in crossbred C, 89.7% in crossbred D and 93.8% in crossbred E, respectively. The fertility was highest in crossbred A, but crossbred C showed the lowest (p<0.05) based on the hatchability. The crossbreds B and C exhibited a superior performance on body weight gains during growing stages but crossbred D showed the lowest (p<0.05). The feed intake was to the pattern of body weight. The feed intake of crossbred D was significantly lower than other crossbreds. Also, feed conversion ratio of crossbred D showed the lowest (p<0.05). Egg production ratio of crossbred D was significantly higher compared to the other crossbreds. These results suggest that the development of new crossbreds of commercial Korean Native Chickens should be required for better performance.

Performance of Growing Period of Two-Crossbreed Parent Stock Korean Native Chickens for Producing of Korean Native Commercial Chickens (토종 실용계 생산용 2원교배 종계의 육성기 능력)

  • This study was carried out to investigate the performance of growing period of two-crossbred of Korean Native Chickens. A total of four hundred eighty female 2-crossbred chicks that restored strains and were aboriginal at National Institute of Animal Science. Treatments were four crossbreds (4 replications/crossbred, 30 birds/replication) as A) C strain ${\times}$ S strain, B) C strain ${\times}$ H strain, C) R strain ${\times}$ S strain, and D) L strain ${\times}$ H strain, respectively. Livability of C crossbred was the highest as over 90% and that of B crossbred was the lowest as 73~78% during growing period (P<0.05). Body weight of A crossbred was the highest at the 4 week and that of D strain was the lowest at the 4 and 8 week (P<0.05). Weekly body weight of B and C crossbreds were higher than A and D crossbreds (P<0.05). There was no significant difference among four crossbreds. Weekly feed intake of D crossbred was the highest among all crossbreds at 0~4 weeks (P<0.05). These results suggested the basic data on the record of growing phase of 2-crossbreed Korean Native Chickens.

The Study on Production and Performance of Crossbred Korean Native Chickens (KNC) (토종 순종계를 이용한 토종닭 생산 및 생산성 연구)

  • The current work was carried out to investigate the effect of crossbred Korean native chickens (KNC) on performance and carcass ratio. Seven hundred twenty 1-d-old chicks were divided into groups by strain (A, B, C and D) and sex (male and female). Strains were A) (KNC egg-meat type C strains $\times$ KNC meat type S strains) $\times$ KNC meat type H strains, B) (KNC egg-meat type C strains $\times$ KNC meat type H strains) $\times$ KNC meat type S strains, C) (KNC native R strains $\times$ KNC meat type S strains) $\times$ KNC meat type H strains and D) (KNC native L strains $\times$ KNC meat type H strains $\times$ Ross broiler. Experimental diets consisted of 3 phases such as starter(0~5 weeks; CP 20.0%, ME 3,050 kcal/kg), earlier (5~8 weeks; CP 18.0%, ME 3,100 kcal/kg) and finisher (8~12 weeks; CP 16.0%, ME 3,150 kcal/kg). Body weight (BW) and feed intake (FI) was measured every week and carcass ratio(CR) was calculated at 5 and 10 week after starting experiment. There was no difference in BW among strains until 5 weeks (P>0.05), however D strain resulted in a higher BW after 5 weeks (P<0.05). Body weight gain (BWG) and FI in D strain were also significant higher compared to the other strains for all periods. However, D strains showed the lowest (P<0.05) fee conversion ratio (FCR). The other strains except D showed a similar BW, BWG, FI and FCR among strains. In addition, there were no differences in carcass weight (CW) and carcass ratio (CR) among strains at 5 weeks, however D strain showed higher CW and CR at 10 weeks. These results suggested the basic data that needed to develope the new strains.

Estimation of Genetic Parameters for Growth and Egg Production Traits in Black Korean Native Chicken and Korean White Leghorn Populations (흑색한국재래닭, 한국화이트레그혼 집단의 산육 및 산란 형질 유전모수 추정)

  • This study was conducted to estimate genetic parameters for growth and egg production traits in Black Korean native chicken (L strain) and Korean White Leghorn (F, K strains) using a multi-traits animal model BLUP. Traits used for this study were body weight at 150 days (BW150) and 270 days (BW270), age at first egg (DAY1st), egg weight at first egg (EW1st) and 270 days (EW270), and number of eggs laid by 270 days (EP270), and included 68,688 pedigree and 123,905 performance records collected from 2001 to 2013. In L, F, K strains, heritability estimates of BW150 were high (0.48, 0.52 and 0.50, respectively); of BW270 were high (0.56, 0.57 and 0.56); of DAY1st were medium to high (0.45, 0.39 and 0.31); of EW1st were low (0.15, 0.16 and 0.15); of EW270 were high (0.58, 0.55 and 0.59) and of EP270 were moderate (0.22, 0.21 and 0.20). The genetic and phenotypic correlation of DAY1st with EP270 were highly negative (-0.73 to -0.63 and -0.48 to -0.42). The genetic and phenotypic correlation of EP270 with BW150 and BW270, respectively were low negative (-0.16 to 0.01 and -0.14 to -0.03) and low to moderate positive (-0.08 to 0.07 and -0.13 to 0.04). The genetic and phenotypic correlation of EW270 with BW150 and BW270, respectively were moderate to high positive (0.39 to 0.49 and 0.36 to 0.46) and (0.29 to 0.33 and 0.34 to 0.37). The study showed that there is a potential for genetic improvement of Korean Indigenous chicken through selection program.

A Study on Regional Native Chicken and Certification System in France - Focusing on Alsace, Bresse Region - (프랑스의 지역별 토종닭과 인증제도에 대한 연구 - 알자스, 브레스 지역을 중심으로 -)

  • Recently, the Korean government has been trying to conserve the genetic resources of native chicken. Although the production aspect is important, consumers should also value the native chicken in order for this market to grow. As certification systems are used to inform consumers about the value of a product, this study aims to investigate certification systems for chicken in France. Two regions were selected: Alsace and Bresse. We conducted a value-chain analysis of activities related to native chicken in each of these two regions, including hatching, breeding, slaughtering and processing, distributing, and marketing activities. We found that various certification systems were used not only to inform consumers about the value of the native chicken but also to protect biodiversity. Also, geographical indication, one kind of certification system, was utilized to establish higher quality based on the characteristics of each region. Implications pertinent to a domestic certification system for Korean native chickens were suggested.

Comparison of growth performance between crossbred Korean native chickens for hatch to 28 days (육성기 교배조합 토종닭 간의 성장률 비교에 관한 연구)

  • The study was conducted to determine the effect of corssbred Korean native chickens (CKNC) on growth performance indices for hatch to 28 days. A total of 192 1-day-old birds were divided into one of 4 CKNC groups by 5 Korean native pure strains. Diets used in the study consisted of 2 phases with corn and soybean meal basis as earlier (1~2 weeks; crude protein 18.5%, metabolizable energy 3,000 kcal/kg), and grower (2~4 weeks; crude protein 15.0%, Metabolizable Energy 2,850 kcal/kg). Body weight and feed intake were measured bi-weekly. Crossbred 1G (group of family line) had higher body weight and average daily gain whereas crossbred 5Y had greater average daily feed intake and feed conversion ratio than other crossbred Korean native chicken for hatch to 28 days. The results in the current study indicated that crossbred 1G had higher growth performance indices compared with other crossbred Korean native chicken for hatch to 28 days.

Optimization of process condition of boiled Korean native chicken by response surface methodology (반응표면분석법을 이용한 백숙용 토종닭 실용계의 가공조건 최적화)

  • This study was examined the optimization of processing conditions for taste-assurance factors of boiled Korean native chicken (KNC) through response surface methodology. The effects of two independent variables, including heating time ($X_1$) and water volume ($X_2$), were investigated using central composite design. Hypoxanthine content, lipid oxidation, texture, and sensory results were chosen as dependent variable. Results showed high reliability on hypoxanthine and texture property in leg meat (not breast meat) of boiled KNC. Statistical modeling revealed that 3.5 folds of added water (v/w) based on chicken weight and 73.5 min of cooking time was the optimum for producing characteristic taste and textural properties from the leg meat of KNC.
