  • A large amount of radioactively-contaminated gravel can be produced on the demolition/restoration of facilities related the back end of fuel cycle. However, because of the lacking in basic knowledge for decontamination of radioactive-contami-nated gravel, this study has performed the basic tests using for soil-washing. To find effective decontamination condition, several experiments were carried out for the selection of optimal decontamination agents. Washing by 0.1 M nitric acid was proved to be more effective than that by distilled water or surfactant for decontamination of uranium-contaminated gravel. In addition, crushing/grinding of uranium-contaminated gravel prior to washing was contributed to increase in of removal efficiency of uranium and reduction of decontamination time. The smaller the sizes of crushed gravel was, the more the removal efficiency increased. Also, small the sized particles improved chances for meeting the clearance requirement of the treated gravel.

  • This study was performed to obtain the basic data on current situations and challengeable aspects of vermicomposting industries in Korea and to develope foodwaste treatment technology using earthworm. Pre-treatment process of food waste consists of cleaning, grinding, mixing and others, and salinity of food waste was 0.7% on average, thus not suitable for feed of worms. When applying wash water and going through the cleaning process, however, salinity was dropped to 0.38%, indicating that cleaning process applying wash water is necessary to control the proper salinity for growth of worms. In the food waste processing experiment applying worms, it has been presented that smaller particles induce higher processing efficiency. As a result, food waste processing by worms is possible through maintaining the suitable environment for survival of worms from input process to generation of cast. Cast generated after processing food waste was proved to be most suitable for product standard of compost thus cast is presented to be recycled after processing the food waste applying the worms.

  • For an efficient remediation of Pb-contaminated soil (S-1) in a clay shooting range, a soil washing test was performed with mineral acid, organic acid, chelating agent, and chloride. The Pb extraction efficiency of extractant (0.1 M) used in the washing test showed the order of HCl > $Na_2$-EDTA > NTA > DTPA > citric acid > malic acid > succinic acid > acetic acid > $CaCl_2$ > $MgCl_2$, for S-1 soil. As compared to initial Pb concentration, extraction efficiency by the concentration of extractant was 93.35%, 80.80%, 73.92%, and 24.57% in S-1 soil for HCl (0.5 M, pH 1.10), $Na_2$-EDTA (0.01 M, pH 3.99), citric acid (0.5 M, pH 1.27), and $MgCl_2$ (0.1 M, pH 8.82), respectively. S-1 soil had 56.83% of residue form and 43.17% of non-residue form (18.04% of exchangeable form), respectively. Although the concentrations of these fractions sharply decreased after HCl washing, since the exchangeable forms with relatively large mobility are still distributed as high as 18.78% (to Pb total content in residual soils) in S-1 soil, it is necessary to devise a proper management plan for residual soils after soil washing application.

  • Pot experiments were conducted to assess the applicability of ferric chloride ($FeCl_3$) as a washing agent for laboratory scale in-situ soil washing of paddy soil contaminated with Pb. During the monitoring period for nearly 90 days, the concentrations of Fe and Mn in the soil solution were lower than that of control soil due to lime ($Ca(OH)_2$) amendment for pH recovery. Lime amendment also affected solubility and fractionation of Pb into soil matrix. The result showed that Pb concentrations of soil solution were consistently lower than that of control soil, and the concentration in the exchangeable fraction in washed soil decreased from 13 to 2 mg/kg. There was no significant difference of biomass yield of rice plant in each pots, and Pb contents in rice roots and grains in washed soil decreased to 50 and 78%, respectively, of the control soil. Therefore, $FeCl_3$ could be used as an acceptable in-situ washing agent for agricultural paddy soil if appropriate soil pH management is subsequently practiced.

  • In accordance with the view on remediated soil as a resource, this study assessed the applicability of soil washing with the neutral phosphate for remediation of arsenic (As)-contaminated soil. Three soil samples of different land uses (i.e., rice paddy, upland field and forest land) were collected from the study site, and the aqua regia-extractable As concentrations were 59.2, 30.8 and 53.1 mg/kg, respectively. Among the neutral phosphate reagents, ammonium phosphate showed the highest As washing efficiency. The optimized washing condition was 2-hr washing with 0.5M ammonium phosphate solution (pH 6) and soil to liquid ratio of 1 : 5. The extraction efficiencies of As did not guarantee the residual soil As concentrations to satisfy the Korea soil regulatory level (i.e., Worrisome level) in the three soil samples. To enhance washing efficiency, the As-contaminated soil was submerged in washing solution (1 : 1, w/v) for 24 hr and 1-hr washing with 0.5M ammonium phosphate solution was tested. As extraction efficiencies of 36.1 (rice paddy), 21.4 (upland field) and 26.4% (forest land) were attained, which satisfied the Worrisome level for Region 1 (25 mg/kg of As) in rice paddy, but not in upland field and forest land.

  • This study proposes a newly developed dry washing method for removing pollutants such as total petroleum hydrocarbon (TPH) and oxidized iron from the surface of ballast gravel. A batch-type dry washing method showed a good performance in a previous study. In this study, a continuous-type dry washing system, instead of a batch-type system, was prepared to improve the efficiency of the system. A drier and a separator were also applied to this system as pre-treatment process, and the performance of this system was evaluated. In this experiment, blasting media was blasted on the polluted gravels through 12 nozzles by a pressure of $5-6kg/cm^2$ for 20-30 mins to remove TPH and oxidized iron. It was found to be possible to remove 80-90% of TPH and oxidized iron by using this system. Several ways to improve the performance were suggested in this study.

  • In order to remediate heavy metal contaminated Nong island, Maehyang-ri shooting range soils through the batch reactor scale washing were evaluated. The experiment texture soil of N3 in the Nong island at north side incline was (g)mS containing 12.9% gravel, 47.0% sand, 35.1% silt and 5.0% clay. And the N3 soil area was contaminated with Cd($22.5\pm1.9$ ppm), Cu($35.5\pm4.0$ ppm), Pb($1,279.0\pm5.1$ ppm) and Zn($403.4\pm9.8$ ppm). The EDTA(ethylene diamine tetra acetic acid, $C_{10}H_{16}N_2O_8$) in the N3 soil was observed as most effective extractants among the 5 extractants(citric acid, EDTA, phosphoric acid, potassium phosphate and oxalic acid) tested. And chemical partitioning of heavy metals after washing N3 soil with EDTA was evaluated. Removal efficiency of residual fractions was higher than that of non-residual fractions. To choose EDTA extractant which is the most effective in soil washing technology using batch reactor process cleaning Pb and Zn contaminated sits; Pb and Zn removal rates were investigated 92.4%, 94.0% removal(1,000 mM, soil:solution=5, $20^{\circ}C$, 24 hour shaking, pH=2, 200 RPM), respectively. The results of the batch test showed that the removal efficiency curve was logarithmic in soil was removal. Thus, EDTA washing process can be applied to remediate the Pb and Zn contaminated soil used in this study.

  • Soil washing with ethylenediaminetetraacetic acid (EDTA) is highly effective in the remediation of soils contaminated with heavy metals. The EDTA recycling process is a requisite for reducing the operating cost. The applicability of Na2S addition on the precipitation of heavy metals from the spent soil washing solution and thereby recycling of EDTA was investigated. Addition of Na2S into the single metal-EDTA and the mixed metal-EDTA solutions ([Na2S]/[metal-EDTA] ratio = 30, reaction time = 30 min and pH = 7~9) was highly effective in the separation of Cu and Pb from metal-EDTA complexes, but not for Ni. The Zn removal efficiency varied with pH and slightly increased upto 40% as the reaction time increased from 0 to 240 min which was longer than those for Cu and Pb. Ca(OH)2 was subsequently added to induce further precipitation of Zn and Ni and to reduce the Na2S dose. At the [Na2S]/[metal-EDTA] ratio of 10, the removal efficiencies of all heavy metals excluding Ni were above 98% with the dose of Ca(OH)2 at 0.002, 0.006 and 0.008 g into 100 mL of Cu-, Pb- and Zn-EDTA solutions, respectively. However, Ca(OH)2 addition was not effective for Ni-EDTA solution. A further research is needed to improve metal removal efficiency and subsequent EDTA recycling for the real application in field-contaminated soils.

  • Cavitation generated by ultrasonic irradiation can enhance the diffusional transport of organic contaminants from soil surfaces or pores. Therefore, ultrasound soil washing can be an alternative of traditional soil washing process. In this study, soil was artificially contaminated with n-tetradecane, n-hexadecane and phenanthrene. A plate type ultrasonic reactor at 25 kHz frequency and 1000W power was used for laboratory soil washing experiments. Ultrasonic soil washing efficiency was compared with those of traditional soil washing using mechanical mixing. Various operational parameter such as soil/liquid ratio, irradiation time, particle size, and soil organic matter content was tested to find out the optimum condition. It was found that ultrasonic soil washing demonstrates better performance than mechanical soil washing. Optimum soil:liquid ratio for ultrasonic soil washing was 1 : 5. Desorption of organic contaminants from soils by ultrasonic irradiation was relatively fast and reached equilibrium within 10 minute. However, decrease in the soil particle sizes by ultrasonic irradiation results in re-adsorption of contaminants to soil phase. It was also observed that soil particle size distribution and soil organic matter content have significant effects on the efficiency of ultrasonic soil washing.
