The objectives of this study were to introduce the methods of soil respiration measurement, to review soil respiration studies conducted in Korea, and to suggest potential issues generated from using various methods for soil respiration measurement. According to the measurement principles, the methods of soil respiration measurements are classified as: alkali absorption method (AA), closed chamber method (CC), closed dynamic chamber method (CDC), and open flow method (OF). Based on the litereaure review on soil respiration studies in Korea, the CDC method was mostly used by the researchers (62%), followed by the AA (17%), OF (13%) and CC (8%) methods. Along with these methods, various instruments were used such as LI-6400-09, EGM-3, EGM-4, and automatic soil respiration chamber. Most of the soil respiration measurements were carried out in forest ecosystems and the reported soil respiration showed a wide range of variations from 130 to 900 mg $CO_2\;m^{-2}h^{-1}$. Continuous monitoring of soil respiration with minimal disturbance and the potential inconsistency in measurements are still the challenges facing the researchers, causing a paucity in quality datasets of sufficient quantity. Few attempts of intercomparison among different methods hinder the data users from synthetic analysis and assessment of the collected datasets. In order to better estimate soil carbon budget and understand their exchange mechanisms in key ecosystems of Korea, it is necessary to measure soil respiration at various plant functional types, soils, and climate conditions over a decadal time scale along with the study on the partitioning of soil respiration into autotrophic and heteorotrophic components.
The objective of this study was to examine effects of stand age on soil $CO_2$ efflux in plantation Pinus koraiensis, and to elucidate what extent plant (fine) root and soil microbial biomass contribute to the whole soil $CO_2$ efflux. In three age classes (20-yr-old. 40-yr-old, 70-yr-old) of plantation Pinus koraiensis, in-situ soil respiration, plant fine root biomass and soil microbial biomass were measured from April to November in 2004. Regardless of stand age, soil temperature and soil $CO_2$ efflux increased until July then slowly decreased. Soil respiration was higher in 70-yr-old stand than in 20- and 40-yr stands. Fine root biomass and soil microbial biomass was also higher in 70-yr-old stand. Root exclusion decreased soil respiration in 40-yr stand, but not in 70-yr stand. Soil microbial biomass was higher in 70-yr stand, but there was no monthly variation between July and November. The results suggest that soil respiration may increase as plant stand ages and microbial contribution could play more roles in older stands.
A trenching method was used to determine the contribution of root respiration to soil respiration in Quercus acutissima forest in the vicinity of Gongju, Chungnam Province, Korea. $CO_2$ efflux in soil respiration plot($R_{control}$, $R_c$) and microblal respiration plot($R_{trenched}$, $R_t$) in Q. acutissima forest were measured from June 2011 to May 2012 by using IRGA soil respiration analyzer. Seasonal $CO_2$ efflux in $R_c$ and $R_t$ were higher in summer season than in winter season. In August, maximun $CO_2$ efflux in $R_c$ and $R_t$ was 1.345 and 0.897 g $CO_2\;m^{-2}\;hr^{-1}$, respectively. $CO_2$ efflux in $R_t$ was lower by 33.31% than that in $R_c$(P<0.05). In January, $CO_2$ efflux in $R_c$ and $R_t$ was 0.097 and 0.032g $CO_2\;m^{-2}\;hr^{-1}$, respectively. $CO_2$ efflux in $R_t$ was lower by 67.01% than that in $R_c$(P<0.01). The amount of annual $CO_2$ efflux from $R_c$ and $R_t$ was 4.320, 2.834kg $CO_2\;m^{-2}\;yr^{-1}$, respectively. There was a significant correlations between soil temperatures and soil respiration. Contribution of root respiration to total soil respiration in this Q. acutissima forest was 34.40%.
Soil respiration and some environmental factors which affect soil respiration were studied in an oak forest, Kongju, Korea. Soil respiration was measured at midday of the 15th and 30th day at every month in control(Con), artificial forest gap (Gap) and litter removed area (Lr) with portable CO₂ Analyzer equipped soil respiration chamber. In July, maximum soil respiration in Con, Cap and Lr was 15.6, 11.2 and 7.7 CO₂μmol·m/sup -2/·s/sup -1/, respectively. Respiration in Gap and Lr decreased by 28.6% and 50.6%, respectively, compared with that in Con. Annual amount of soil CO₂ evolution from Con, Gap and Lr was 6.86, 5.84, 3.81 kg·m/sup -2/·yr/sup -1/, respectively. Annual amount of CO₂ evolution in Gap and Lr decreased by 14.8% and 44.5%, respectively, compared with that in Con. Soil respiration rates exponentially increased with temperature. Temperature of soil surface and at 5 cm depth was strongly related to soil respiration rates in Con (r₂=0.87, 0.93), Gap (r₂=0.81, 0.88) and Lr (r/sub 2/=0.89).
Timber harvesting impacts on soil microbial populations and respiration rates were examined in naturally regenerating trembling aspen(Populus tremuloides Michx.) stands on two contrasting soils, an Omega loamy sand (sandy mixed, frigid Typic Udipsamment) and an Ontonagon clay loam (very fine, mixed Glossic Eutroboralf). Five timber harvesting disturbances were simulated during winter of 1990 and spring of 1991, including commercial whole-tree harvesting(CWH), winter logging trail+CWH, logging slash removal+CWH(LSR), forest floor removal+LSR(FFR), and spring compaction+FFR. Regardless of soil types, total soil respiration rates of each stand decreased slightly or remained the same after harvesting while microbial population increased progressively during the first two years following harvesting. Microbial populations increased more rapidly and constantly at the sandy site than at the clayey site, which may indicate that the soil physical and chemical conditions changed more drastically for microbial activity following timber harvesting at the sandy site than at the clayey site. However, two kinds of treatment applications-three levels of organic matter removal and two levels of compaction-did not result in significant differences in microbial population or total soil respiration rate at each site during the first two post-harvest years. Total soil respiration of the aspen stands, sum of root respiration and microbial respiration, was a poor index for the microbial activity in this study because aspen kept an active root system for the successive root-sprouts even after harvesting, which resulted in a large portion of root respiration in total respiration.

To estimate the effect of rainfall on soil respiration, soil $CO_2$ efflux was measured with a manipulation of rainfall interception at a broad-leaved deciduous forest in western Japan from 20 February to 19 November 2001. The diurnal patterns of soil respiration observed at the intercepted subplot ($F_c$) were quite similar to those of soil temperature at 0.2 m depth with a maximum around midnight and a minimum from noon to early afternoon. Such diurnal patterns have not been observed in the previous studies at the same study site under natural conditions (which manifested no clear diurnal variations). Furthermore, the magnitudes of $F_c$ showed substantial differences (e.g., ~50% reduction under water-limited conditions) compared to those of the potential soil respiration under natural conditions ($F_{cal}$). These findings demonstrate that rainfall events not only affected the magnitude of soil $CO_2$ efflux but also modified the vertical structure of soil temperature, thereby altering diurnal patterns of soil respiration.
The purpose of this study is to analyze the soil $CO_2$ efflux and micro-climate of a preserved forest area located in a Mt. bulam urban nature park Quercus acutissima stand from June 2013 to May 2014. The research showed that the soil and heterotrophic $CO_2$ efflux were $28.14{\pm}7.99$ to $582.47{\pm}318.51$ and $12.32{\pm}8.04$ to $415.71{\pm}159.92mg\;CO_2{\cdot}m^{-2}{\cdot}h^{-1}$, respectively. In addition the seasonal soil $CO_2$ efflux of summer, autumn, winter, spring were 1169.1, 454.81, 72.08 and $494.23g\;CO_2{\cdot}m^{-2}{\cdot}month^{-1}$, respectively. On the other hand, the seasonal heterotrophic $CO_2$ efflux were 526.20, 340.09, 45.13 and $374.9g\;CO_2{\cdot}m^{-2}{\cdot}month^{-1}$, respectively. Moreover, the annual soil and heterotrophic $CO_2$ efflux was found to be 2190.22 and $1286.33g\;CO_2{\cdot}m^{-2}{\cdot}yr^{-1}$, respectively. The exponential function was also utilized for the regression analysis in order to correlate the environmental factors with the soil and heterotrophic $CO_2$ efflux. It was found out that both air and soil temperatures were positively correlated with the soil and heterotrophic $CO_2$ efflux. However, the amount of solar radiation and soil moisture has showed low correlation for both types of $CO_2$ efflux. Contribution of root $CO_2$ efflux to total soil $CO_2$ efflux in this Quercus acutissima stand was 33.60%.
This study was conducted to find out the soil $CO_2$ emission characteristic due to rain fall pattern and intensity changes. Using Automatic Opening and Closing Chambers (AOCCs), we have measured annual soil respiration changes in Pinus koraiensis plantation at Seoul National University experimental forest in Mt. Taehwa. In addition, we have monitored heterotrophic respiration at trenching sites ($4{\times}6m$). Based on the one year data of soil respiration and heterotrophic respiration, we observed that 24% of soil respiration was derived from root respiration. During the rainy season (end of July to September), soil respiration at trenching site and trenching with rainfall interception site were measure during portable soil respiration analyzer (GMP343, Vaisala, Helsinki, Finland). Surprisingly, even after days of continuous heavy rain, soil water content did not exceed 20%. Based on this observation, we suggest that the maximum water holding capacity is about 20%, and relatively lower soil water contents during the dry season affect the vital degree of trees and soil microbe. As for soil respiration under different rain intensity, it was increased about 14.4% under 10 mm precipitation. But the high-intensity rain condition, such as more than 10 mm precipitation, caused the decrease of soil respiration up to 25.5%. Taken together, this study suggests that the pattern of soil respiration can be regulated by not only soil temperature but also due to the rain fall intensity.
In territorial ecosystem, soil has stored considerable amount of carbon, and it is vulnerable to weakness release much of the carbon to atmosphere. In this study, we have been effort realization and discussion to the error between inter-instruments and measurement methods, time and special variations, gap filling and separation from each source included in soil respiration, used to collect soil respiration data in various ecosystems in Korea. In conclusion, it have to collect calibration data throughout comparison test between methods and instruments because accumulated data from past and accumulating data in present did not calibrated. In predicting change of soil carbon dynamic using the model method, it needs important data such as longterm and short-term data, artificial handling data of major factor, data from various ecosystem, soil texture, soil depth etc. In company with, we should collect highly qualified data through deep consideration of present problems.

We review three methods of separating soil respiration into root and soil microbial contribution: (1) component integration, (2) root exclusion, and (3) isotopic method. Among these methods, component integration and root exclusion are most commonly used. Root respiration contribution to soil respiration estimated by the root exclusion method is higher than those by other two methods. Trenching has little environmental disturbances in soil or on surface of site compared to other methods in root exclusion such as root removal and gap formation. Isotopic method has an advantage over other methods because of minimal soil and root disturbances, but this method is costly and requires techniques for the complex analysis. Trenching seems to be an appropriate in situ method for calculating component contributions to soil respiration with minimum disturbances in site. However, the method overestimates the contribution of microbial respiration because of root decay, and realistic results could be obtained by estimating root decay or avoiding large roots in trenched plots.
