This study was carried out to establish an improved bioassay system on the side of practicality, pre-emergence bioassay which is more effective in developing soil application natural herbicides. A miniaturized method which have a 50 cm2 of soil surface area and was efficient by 7 times compared to the existing soil application assay ($350cm^2$ of soil surface area) was established, in which four weed species (Echinochloa crus-galli, Digitaria sanguinalis, Aeschynomene indica, and Abutilon theophrasti) were planted and grown in greenhouse. This would be applicable when the amount of screening compound is much more than 50 mg. The initial application rate was desirable at $10,000{\mu}g\;mL^{-1}$. On the other hand, the 6 well plate assay which has 4 weed species in each well containing upland soil and could be conducted in growth chamber, was established. This assay was resulted in minimizing in level of 1/14 test volume and 1/14 amounts of test compound to the conventional method that has been used for screening of synthetic compounds in KRICT, and applicable for the small amount of test compound (less than 10 mg). Therefore, the improved bioassays established in this study would be helpful for a rapid and efficient development of soil application natural herbicides.

This study was carried out to develop the soil conditioner and/or the absorbent of high CEC with the natural zeolite poeder whose price was very low. The $SiO_2/Al_2O_3$ ratio & CEC of the natural zeolite were 6.78 and 67.5me/100g respectively. The CEC of the post-reaction product which was treated with 3N-NaOH and $Na_2O/Al_2O_3$ ratio. 9.5 for 8hours was about 200me/100g, which was the highest value than any other treatments. The dominant clay minerals were clinoptilolite, mordenite and smectite in natural zeolite, while phillipsite in the post-reaction product.
Understanding flow pattern of water and solute in subsurface is essential for the reduction and prevention of contamination of soil and groundwater and for the investigation and remediation of contaminated site. The objective of this study is to examine the infiltration pattern in a soil developed from the Jurassic granite using (Brilliant Blue FCF $C_{37}H_{34}N_{2}Na_{2}O_{9}S_{3}$), the nonfluorescent and nontoxic food dye. All image processing was conducted using geographic image processing software, ER Mapper, Version 6.2. The dye coverage was determined by counting the stained pixels in the photographs (80${\times}$80cm, 80TEX>${\times}$5cm) for the vertical and horizontal view. A homogeneous matrix flow occurred in the A horizon with weak, medium granular structure and fingering at the interface of finer-textured A horizon and coarser-textured C horizon. Pegmatitic vein originated from the granite and plant root in C horizon induced preferential flow.
Forest soils were collected from various sites adjacent to the heavy industrial complexes and soil solutions were extracted to characterize the chemical properties and to find factors affecting forest decline by acid deposition. Concentrations of $NO_3{^-}$, $SO{_4}^{2-}$, $F^-$ and Al in the soil solutions collected from industrial complexes were 2-33 times higher than those from the non-industrial areas. pH and Al concentrations were significantly correlated with $NO_3{^-}$ and $SO{_4}^{2-}$ concentrations. Forest soils from Onsan and Ulsan regions had very low Ca and Mg concentrations in the soil solutions. In these sites, the molar ratios of Ca/Al and Mg/Al were also lower than 2 and 1, respectively. Aluminum concentrations in the A and B horizons were 547 and $683mg\;kg^{-1}$, respectively, which were considered to be high enough to inhibit tree growth. Magnesium deficiency in A horizon and high concentrations of Al and Mn in B horizon were considered as the major limiting factors for tree growth by inhibiting the uptake of Ca and Mg and causing the imbalance of nutrients in both soil solution and trees.
For development of slow releaseing K-fertilizer using natural zeolite, two kinds of K adsorbed zeolite were made by ion exchange reaction in $K^+$ saturated aqueous solution. K-Zeolite was prepared by removing the excess salt after K adsorption on zeolite, however, NW. K-Zeolite was prepared only by K adsorption reaction without removing the excess salt. The adsorbed K on zeolite was not easily released, but continuously and slowly released from the surface of zeolite. By the results of application for tobacco cultivation, the K contents in soil treated with K-Zeolite and NW. K-Zeolite were lower than that of control (20kg/10a) at the early growth stage, but were higher at the late growth stage. Therefore, the results suggest that K adsorbed zeolite could be applied as a slow-releasing K fertilizer.
AMD (Acid mine drainage) from disused mines is one or the most significant pollutant problems to make harmful effect to human health. We demonstrated the mechanism of resolution and adsorption reaction for arsenic, manganese and zink from the soil and mine tailings which were located in the vicinity of a disused mine in Kyoungnam area. The resolution experiments were carried with a column test f3r 45 days continuously. Metal chemical forms in water were changed with the condition of solution pH and ORP (oxidation-reduction potential). Metal chemical forms affected on the reaction of resolution and adsorption of metals in water environments. Even though the sampling was carried in very closed location, there was significant different results of pollution level and ORP changes in terms of column operations. Hence It was important to note the pH and ORP in AMD to evaluate a risk assessment and a soil management using monitoring metals. When we operate AMD management with the mechanism of resolution and adsorption it can be achieved better economic solution.
The optimum conditions for the analysis of the difenoconazole fungicide on soil and crops were investigated and the residues of that in apple and soil were identified by using the gas chromatography. The extract with acetonitrile was separated with saturated NaCl and n-hexane solution after filtered, and concentrated. Obtained fungicide residues were transfered to the florisil column and eluted with acetone and n-hexane mixed solution for the analysis by GLC(ECD). From the standard addition experiments with 0.20 and 1.0ppm, the average recoveries were 86~92% and the detection limit was 0.01 ppm. It seems to be safely used when difenoconazole is treated three times until 15 days before harvest of apple. In this case residual amounts of difenoconazole in apple was from 0.037ppm to 0.044ppm. The soil samples extracted with methanol and ammonium hydroxide mixed solution were partitioned with dichloromethane and saturated sodium chloride solution. The organic phase was concentrated and redissolved with toluene and analyzed with GLC(FID) after cleaned with Sep-Pak column. From the standard addition experiments with 0.10, 0.50 and 1.0ppm, the average recoveries were 101.2~103.7% and the detection limit was 0.025ppm.

Various factors affecting on the bioassay were investigated. Experiments with a low mixture ratio (cell to toxicant solution) of 0.5 : 9.5 (v/v) produced observable bioluminescence intensity for assay. Both sodium lactate and potassium nitrate stimulate bioluminescence activity; 2.6~4.0 times of control. Distilled water and MSM, which gave non significant effects on the bioluminescence activity, were determined as proper diluent or extract solutions. A wide range of toxic responses of metals and organics were observed. In general, organics were much less sensitive than metals. Samples collected from eleven sites showed the bioluminescence activity ranging from 29 to 111% of the control. Significant correlation between toxicity and total metal contents was not observed, but the toxicity of two groups, sorted based on the contaminated arsenic concentration in soils, was 44% and 20%, showing considerable differences.
In order to enhance the efficiency of removal a series of ElectroKinetic Remediation (EKR) tests on ferrous soil contaminated by lead are carried out using acids, chelates and surfactant as flushing agents. The test results indicate that pH in the electrolyte rapidly reached at steady state as the introduce of flushing solution of the lower pH, the type of flushing solution have no effect the distribution of electrical voltage within the sample but the increasing of solution concentration increases it at x/L=0.9. In the distribution of the residual lead in the sample SDS is the highest. Also, the removal efficiency for acetic acid concentration of 1mM Is the highest but the concentration of acetic acid significantly have no effect.
