The Discrete Element Method (DEM) has been widely used in civil engineering as well as various industrial fields to simulate granular materials. In this study, DEM was adopted to predict the performance of the face plate-type earth pressure balance (EPB) shield TBM (Tunnel Boring Machine). An analysis of the TBM excavation performance was conducted according to two pre-defined excavation conditions with the different rotation speeds per minute (RPM) of the cutterhead. The TBM model which was used in this study has a 6.64 m of diameter and six spokes. Also, 37 precutters and 98 scrapers at an each spoke were modeled with a real-scale specification. From the analysis, compressive forces at the cutterhead face, shield and cutting tools, resistant torques at the cutterhead face, muck discharge rate and accumulated muck discharge by the screw auger were measured and compared.
The Discrete Element Method (DEM) has been widely used in granular material researches. Especially, if material has a large deformation, such as ground, it can be a useful method to analyze. In this study, to simulate ground formations, DEM was used. The main purpose of DEM analysis was to investigate the numerical model which can predict the TBM performance by simulating excavating procedure. The selected EPB TBM has a 7.73 m of diameter and six spokes. And two pre-defined excavation conditions with the different rotation speeds per minute (RPM) of the cutterhead was applied. In the modeled cutterhead, the open ratio of cutterhead was 21.31% and number of cutters (including disc cutter and cutter bit) was 219. From the results, reaction forces and resistant torques at the cutterhead face and cutting tools, were measured and compared. Additionally the muck discharge rate and accumulated muck discharge by the screw auger were evaluated.

Mononobe-Okabe (M-O) theory is widely used for evaluating seismic earth pressure of retaining wall. It was originally developed for gravity walls, which have rigid behavior, retaining cohesionless backfill materials. However, it is used for cantilever retaining wall on the various foundation conditions. Considering only inertial force of the soil wedge as a dynamic force in the M-O method, inertial force of the wall does not take into account the effect on the dynamic earth pressure. This paper presents the theoretical background for the calculation of the dynamic earth pressure of retaining wall during earthquakes, and the current research trends are organized. Besides, the discrepancies between real seismic behavior and M-O method for inverted T-shape retaining wall with 5.4m height subjected to earthquake motions were evaluated using dynamic centrifuge test. From previous studies, it was found that application point, distribution of dynamic earth pressure and M-O method are needed to be re-examined. Test results show that real behavior of retaining wall during an earthquake has a different phase between dynamic earth pressure and inertial force of retaining wall. Moreover, when bending moments of retaining wall reach maximum values, the measured earth pressures are lower than static earth pressures and it is considered due to inertial effects of retaining wall.

In the development of engineering designs, decisions are required irrespective of the state of completeness and quality of information, and are formulated under conditions of uncertainty. Furthermore, under conditions of uncertainty the design invokes risks. Thus, in the design of the structures, the currently used deterministic design method does not provide a realistic assessment of the actual safety or the reliability of the structures. It is desirable that decisions required in The process of the design invariably must be made based on the reliability analysis. Properties of soil material are subject to more uncertainty than those of other structural material. In the field of soil mechanics and foundation engineering, it needed to develop reliability-based design methods. In order to simplify the reliability analysis or the reliability-based design process of the structures associated with the active earth pressure, it is necessary to find the variation and the distribution type of the active earth pressure calculated from the basic properties of soils. Monte Carlo simulation is performed to obtain the relationship between the variation of the active earth pressure for cohessionless soils calculated by using Rankine formula and the basic soil properties and the distribution type of the earth pressure. A series of regression equations obtained by utilizing the multi-linear regression analysis is suggested in this paper and the sensitivity of the basic soil properties to the variation of The earth pressure is investigated. The type of distribution of the active earth pressure was found to be the beta distribution in most cases or to be very similar to the beta distribution, if the basic soil variables are normally distributed.
The purpose of this research is to introduce the new temporary earth retaining wall system using landslide stabilizing piles. This system is a self-supported retaining wall (SSR) without installing supports such as tiebacks, struts and rakers. The SSR is a kind of gravity structures consisting of twin parallel lines of piles driven below excavation level, tied together at head of soldier piles and landslide stabilizing piles by beams. In order to investigate applicability and safety of this system, a series of experimental model tests were carried out and the obtained results are presented and discussed. Furthermore, the measured data from seven different sites on which the SSR was used for excavation were collected and analyzed to investigate the characteristic behavior lateral wall movements associated with urban excavations in Korea. It is observed that lateral wall movements obtained from the experimental model is in good agreement with the general trend observed by in site measurements.
The Green Wall system, developed in Austria early 1960, is one of segmental concrete crib type earth retaining wall. Green wall is constructed as procedures that lay the front stretchers, rear stretchers and headers then making a rigid body through harden filled soil of interior cell. Green wall has pro-environmental advantages that able to grow grass in front space of stretchers and decrease cutting ground. In Europe, Green wall used without other reinforcement method. However, green wall used with other reinforcement method like a soil nailing because of environmental problem. This study was performed to introduce the design case by 'Two-Body Translation mechanism' to be able to consider distribution of earth pressure in the soil nailing when designing the green wall using soil nailing system. Also, this study attempts to evaluate the earth pressure change when advanced soil nailing system is constructed using $FLAC^{2D}$ ver. 3.30 program and 'Two-Body Translation mechanism'.
The mechanical behavior of the underground box culvert constructed by the open cut method depends mainly on the earth pressure acting on it. In this study, the earth pressure on the underground box culverts constructed by the open cut method during and after the construction sequence was numerically analysed by using FLAC. The results are compared with those of the Marston-Spangler's theory, silo theory, and the model tests. The results showed that the vertical earth pressure on the upper slab of the box structure was not uniform. It was as large as the overburden in the middle part of the slab but was smaller or larger than that at its end part depending on the slope of the excavation, the depth of the cover, and the width of the side refill. The horizontal earth pressure on the side wail was much smaller than the earth pressure at rest and grew nonlinearly with the depth.
