Correct evaluation of cut and fill volume of soil is one of the most important factors which controls construction cost in enormous construction sites. To achieve accurate computation of soil volume in construction site precise surveying is required, however most of construction sites adopt existing optical surveying instruments such as Total Station. The problem when using these optical instruments in construction sites is that these instruments take longer time in data acquisition. Due to insufficiency of computation time accurate and precise observation cannot be accomplished with these equipments. As a result roughly calculated earthwork volume may cause arguments between contractors and supervisors in the matter of reduction or increasement of total construction cost. In this study VRS-RTK Surveying is adopted to perform fast and accurate in-situ surveying for rapid computation of soil volume. This VRS-RTK Surveying system is proved to have more accurate three dimensional coordinates with high density and better economical solution with less manpower.

Volume survey for earthwork is conducted periodically at every month at large scaled construction sites for request payment for the construction. Currently, the earthwork volume is calculated on the overlapped drawing for two cross sections which were created by new and previous surveying data observed by GPS and TS. However the survey is required lots of time and expenses as it is a pin-point surveying method thus surveyors intend to get data only for the heavy undulated topographic features chosen by himself to save time and expenses. Consequently, it causes poor results due to low dense measurement as well as it's not matched with the results by another surveyors. As a result, the conflicts related in earthwork volume calculation often arises among the owner, contractors and sub contractors. In this study, we developed a method to get surveying data for fast and accurate volume calculation using 3D Mobile Laser System and conducted an application test. Also we carried out experiments for topographic survey using MLS to judge for the application additionally. The results showed that we could reduce a time for cross section survey from 48 hours to 2 hours and collected high dense data which have 0.2m interval instead of 3m interval compare with existing method. Also we could make a map which has high accuracy within 10cm in horizontal through topographic survey using MLS.
The purpose of this study is digitalization of earthwork such as development of 3D terrain analysis platform using latest technologies including unmanned aerial vehicle and terrestrial laser scanner to ultimately achieve earthwork automation. It is necessary to develop related element technologies and to establish regulations so that it can be applied to the domestic construction projects. As a result of pilot project about the earthwork surveying automation technology, it was confirmed that information such as terrain coordinates, soil, boring, and excavation volume is acquired smoothly. In this paper, we investigate related regulations and manuals in Japan and propose the improvement plan of domestic regulation. We plan to study regulations from early to final construction stage, combine with the 'regulation for public surveying', and improve the regulations in detail.
Earth-work calculation is the important data for estimating the optimal construction cost at the construction site. Earth-work calculations require the accurate terrain data and precise soil volume calculations. Drone surveying technology provides accurate topography in a short time and economic advantages. In this paper, a drone surveying technique was used to derive a high precision soil volume calculation system. Field demonstration were performed to verify the accuracy of the volume measurement system. The results of earth-work calculation using drone survey were compared with those of GPS surveying. In addition, the developed earth-work volume calculation algorithm is compared with the existing aerial survey software (Pix4D) to verify the accuracy.

The purpose of this thesis lies in proving the practicality of photogrammetry and in promoting photogrammetry in earthwork which plays a major role in civil engineering projects. Analysis of accuracy in the determination of ammount of earthework was done by applying interpolation methods in digital terrain model. As a result of analysis of the data acquisition method, in cross-section method produced acceptable accuracy from Simpson's three-eighths rule and prismoidal rule. In results DTM, we have obtained the fact that earthwork calculation accuracy was increased by applying two or more interpolation methods. Therefore, the method by digital terrain model using aerial photograph has proved to be more efficient.

Calculation of quantity at construction sites is a factor that has a great influence on construction costs, and it is important to calculate accurate values. In this study, topographic model was created by using drone photogrammetry and drone LiDAR to estimate earthwork volume. ortho image and DSM (Digital Surface Model) were constructed for the study area by drone photogrammetry, and DEM (Digital Elevation Model) of the target area was established using drone LiDAR. And through accuracy evaluation, accuracy of each method are 0.034m, 0.35m in horizontal direction, 0.054m, 0.25m in vertical direction. Through the research, the usability of drone photogrammetry and drone LiDAR for constructing geospatial information was presented. As a result of calculating the volume of the study site, the UAV photogrammetry showed a difference of 1528.1㎥ from the GNSS (Global Navigation Satellite System) survey performance, and the 3D Laser Scanner showed difference of 160.28㎥. The difference in the volume of earthwork is due to the difference in the topographic model, and the efficiency of volume calculation by drone LiDAR could be suggested. In the future, if additional research is conducted using GNSS surveying and drone LiDAR to establish topographic model in the forest area and evaluate its usability, the efficiency of terrain model construction using drone LiDAR can be suggested.

In the study, an accuracy of earthwork volume is evaluated according to different methods of the calculation with different criteria. The criteria applied to this study are a interpolation method, a grid intavals and the method of earthwork evaluation. A numerical test has performed on two different terrain models with four different methods of calculation in the earthwork volume and two different grid intervals. The end area method, prismoidal formular, Simpson's formular, and middle area method are applied to the calculation of the earthwork volume. As a result of this study, it is showed that the moving average method with the first order term gives the most accurate result in interpolation, and that also the prismoidal formular and Simpson's formular gives more accurate result than average and area method and middle area method in the calculation of earthwork volume.

Ministry of construction & transportation is operating for the soil and rock information system and is considered to accurate application of soil conversion factor that is essentially necessary for accurate calculation of earth volume. Since the balance of cutting earth in public work, the plan of spoil bank or borrow pit are directly related to construction costs, accurate calculation of earth volume and efficient scheme of haul are important. As such, this study has provided methods that can acquire information that is more rapid, applicable to job sites, and trustworthy by comparing resultant values of photogrammetry, laser scanning, or inside job site experimentations, and calculated soil conversion factor by applying photogrammetry and laser scanning methods for hard rock that has difficulty in calculating soil conversion factor. The study can provide alternatives that can resolve the problems of unbalanced earth volume that may arise in applying to plans the earth conversion factor that relies on planning books and experience without considering the characteristics of job site earth, and can establish its relevancy by calculating soil conversion factor for hard rock that has relative difficulties in doing inside or job site testing.

It is very important to get the accurate calculation of pit-excavation volume in many civil engineering projects. There have been common drawbacks to earlier methods of ground profiling, such dealing with sharp corners or the grid points any two straight lines. There are several papers of using spline surfaces to obtain more accurate calculations of the earthwork. In this paper, we propose an algorithm of finding a spline surface without boundary conditions which interpolates the given data and an appropriate method to calculate the earthwork. We present some computational results showing that our proposed method provides good accuracy.
