Study on The Antibacterial and Anti-mite Effects of Terpenes Against Bedding Bacteria (침구류 세균에 대한 테르펜의 항균 및 항진드기 효과에 대한 연구)

  • The purpose of this study is to check the antimicrobial activity of terpene, a natural product-derived extract against bedding bacteria, and compare the number of bacteria detected. To this end, the number of mites and microbiological surveys were conducted on the pillows used at home to identify the presence of pathogenic strains that could cause the disease. Also, after two weeks test using pillow with terpene, a natural origin extract, the rate of reduction of fungi before and after the use of the substance and the effect of eradicating mites were evaluated. The antimicrobial activity of the terpene was observed by using the Pour plate method. The anti-mite effect was detected as weak positive (less than 100) in 2 of 4 pillows in the first test without the use of terpene. In the second experiment using a terpene, all were confirmed to be reduced to negative less than 20. The best anti-mite efficacy of terpene was found to be 20%. The purpose of this study is to suggest the possibility of developing antibacterial and anti-mite spray products for bedding using terpene.

침엽수로부터 배출되는 테르펜의 지역별 배출특성에 관한 연구

  • 우리나라에서 자생하는 소나무속의 침엽수 중 가장 대표적인 수종은 소나무이며, 리기다소나무가 그 뒤를 잇는다. 이 두 수종을 대상으로 테르펜의 배출속도와 물질별 구성비율을 비교하여 본 결과, 소나무와 리기다의 유사점은 $\alpha$-pinene, myrcene, $\beta$-phellandrene이 주요하게 나타났다. 리기다소나무의 경우에는 소나무에서 보다 $\beta$-pinene이 다소 크게 나타났으나, 지역별로는 테르펜의 구성비 차이가 거의 없었다. 삼림으로부터 방출되는 테르펜의 배출특성을 연구하기 위해서는 보다 많은 수종에 대한 광범위한 연구가 필요할 것으로 사료된다.

Change of Physical Property of Rubber Compound by Terpene Modified Phenolic Resin Structure (테르펜 개질 페놀 수지 구조에 따른 배합고무 물성 변화)

  • Terpene-modified phenolic resins were used to improve the tires wet traction related to the driving safety and also rolling resistance related to fuel efficiency. In this work, alpha-pinene, beta pinene, and delta limonene resins, which constitute different basic structures of terpene-modified phenolic resins, were individually added to the tread compounds of tires and their physical properties were compared with those of the alkyl phenol resin compounds. Alkyl phenolic resins showed no significant difference in tangent delta from terpene-modified phenolic resins at 0 ℃, which is related to wet traction, but showed higher tangent delta at 80 ℃, which is related to rolling resistance, indicating smaller fuel efficiency improvement effects. Among the terpene-modified phenolic resins, beta pinene one showed improved wet traction and fuel efficiency compared to those of other resins. Delta limonene resin showed the best wet traction improvement effect, and alkyl phenolic resins showed relatively high tensile strength and abrasion property. All terpene-modified resins exhibited better rolling resistance than those of alkyl phenolic ones so that they can be said to have better fuel efficiency improvement effects and also to improve other properties compared to those of blanks. Terpene-modified phenolic resins could be used when mixing tire compounds referring to the properties of the phenolic resins revealed in this work, which could result in preparing compounds with improved wet traction and rolling resistance.

Measurements of Isoprene and Monoterpenes at Mt. Taehwa and Estimation of Their Emissions (경기도 태화산에서 isoprene과 monoterpenes 측정 및 배출량 산정)

  • To investigate the distributions of BVOCs (Biogenic Volatile Organic Compounds) from mountain near mega city and their role in forest atmospheric, BVOCs and their oxidized species were measured at a 41 m tower in Mt. Taehwa during May, June and August 2013. A proton transfer reaction-mass spectrometer (PTR-MS) was used to quantify isoprene and monoterpenes. In conjunction with BVOCs, $O_3$, meteorological parameters, PAR (Photosynthetically Active Radiation) and LAI (Leaf Area Index) were measured. The average concentrations of isoprene and monoterpenes were 0.71 ppbv and 0.17 ppbv, respectively. BVOCs showed higher concentrations in the early summer (June) compared to the late summer (August). Isoprene started increasing at 2 PM and reached the maximum concentration around 5 PM. In contrast, monoterpenes concentrations began to increase 4 PM and stayed high at night. The $O_3$ maximum was generally found at 3 PM and remained high until 5 PM or later, which was concurrent with the enhancement of $O_3$. The concentrations of BVOCs were higher below canopy (18 m) than above canopy, which indicated these species were produced by trees. At night, monoterpenes concentrations were negatively correlated with these of $O_3$ below canopy. Using MEGAN (Model of Emissions of Gases and Aerosols from Nature), the emissions of isoprene and monoterpenes were estimated at 1.1 ton/year and 0.9 ton/year, respectively at Mt. Taehwa.

  • Hot melt adhesive which is solventless type has been widely used due to the possibility of automated adhesion process. The main purpose of this study is the development of polyamide based hot melt adhesive to improve the property of conventional ethylene-vinyl acetate hot melt adhesive, which has an inherent problem against heat resistance. In this study, it was found that the terpolymers of nylon 6, nylon 66, and nylon 12(CM831, 843P types) instead of nylon homopolymer were suitable base resins for hot melt adhesive, since the disruption of regularity in the polymer chains reduced the crystallinity, resulting in lower melting point and melt viscosity. According to the results, the optimum adhesion property could be obtained by the using 75/25~50/50 weight radio of CM831/843P resin as a base resin. Terpene resin was used as tackifier to improve adhesion and wetting properties. The best result can be obtained with the 10 wt.% addition of terpene resin. The terpene resin acted as proper tackifier in this system which decreased the melt temperature and viscosity, but increased the mechanical strength of adhesive itself. Also, the rheological property of the adhesive changed from typical non-Newtonian behavior to Newtonian behavior as terpene resin was added.

Volatile Flavor Compounds in Commercial Vinegar Beverages Derived from Fruits (과일유래 시판 식초음료류의 휘발성 향기성분)

  • This study compared volatile flavor profiles of 4 commercial vinegar beverages (Italian vinegar beverage (IVB), Japanese vinegar beverage (JVB), Japanese Yuzu-Ponz (JYP), and Korean white wine vinegar beverage (KWVB)). Flavor components of vinegar beverages (VBs) were determined using SPME/GC/MSD. The profiles of VBs were as follows; IVB (11 acids, 17 esters, 10 alcohols, 8 aldehydes, 3 terpenes, 4 aromatic hydrocarbons, 9 ketones), JVB (7 acids, 8 esters, 9 alcohols, 7 aldehydes, 13 terpenes, 7 aromatic hydrocarbons, 1 ketones, 3 miscellaneous compounds), JYP (3 acids, 12 esters, 8 alcohols, 7 aldehydes, 63 terpenes, 6 aromatic hydrocarbons, 2 ketones, 5 miscellaneous compounds), KWVB (10 acids, 10 esters, 9 alcohols, 8 aldehydes, 2 terpenes, 5 aromatic hydrocarbons, 4 ketones, 2 miscellaneous compounds). IVB and JVB showed similar flavor compositions (acids, ketones and esters in particular), whereas major components in JYP and KWVB were terpenes (79.6%) and acids (81.0%), respectively. Five compounds including 2-phenylethyl acetate (floral, fruity, sweet odor), 2-phenylethanol (floral, rose odor), vitispirane (fruity odor), geranylacetone (fragrant odor) and acetic acid were identified as major components in balsamic vinegar beverages.

A new Cytotoxic Triterpene Hydroperoxide from the Aerial Part of Youngia japonica (뽀리뱅이의 세포독성 트라이테르펜 하이드로퍼옥사이드 성분)

  • A new cytotoxic triterpene hydroperoxide (3) was isolated from the methylene chloride extract of the aerial part of Youngia japonica together with four known triterpenes (1, 2, 4 and 5). Their structures were identified by means of physico-chemical and spectral data to be $\beta$-amyrin acetate (1), taraxasterol (2), 2l$\alpha$-hydroperoxy-taraxasterol (3), oleanolic acid (4) and ursolic acid (5). Compounds 3 and 5 showed moderate cytotoxicity against five tumor cell lines.
