  • Turbo code, a kind of channel coding technique, has ben used in the field of digital mobile communication system if the number of iterations is increased in the several channel environments, my further iteration results in very little improvement, and requires much delay and computation in proportion to the number of iterations. In this paper, it proposes an efficient stopping rules for the iteration process in turbo decoding. By using absolute mean values for the LLR difference values between the first and second decoder in the present decoding process, the proposed algorithm can largely reduce the average number of iterations without BER performance degradation in all SNR regions. As a result of simulation, the average number of iterations of proposed algorithm is reduced by about $18.25%{\sim}20.58%$ compared to SDR algerian in the lower SNR region, and is reduced by about $22.96%{\sim}28.74%$ compared to method using variance values of extrinsic information in the upper SNR region.

  • This paper presented an efficient transceiver structure of multiband Frequency Shift Keying (FSK) signals with direct sequence spread spectrum for maintaining covertness and performance. In aspect to covertness, direct sequence spread spectrum method, which multiplying by Pseudo Noise (PN) codes whose rate is much higher than that of data sequence, is employed. In aspect to performance, in order to overcome performance degradation caused by multipath and Doppler spreading, we applied multiband, turbo equalization, and weighting algorithm are applied. Based on the simulation results, by applying 4 number of multiband and number of chips are 8 and 32, experiments were conducted in a lake with a distance of moving from 300 m to 500 m between the transceivers. we confirmed that the performance was improved as the number of bands and chips are increased. Furthermore, the performance of multiband was improved when the proposed weighting algorithm was applied.

  • In this paper, the network performance of a turbo coded optical code division multiple access (CDMA) system with cross-layer, which is between physical and network layers, concept is analyzed and simulated. We consider physical and MAC layers in a cross-layer concept. An intensity-modulated/direct-detection (IM/DD) optical system employing pulse position modulation (PPM) for satellite broadcasting communications is considered. In order to increase the system performance, turbo codes composed of parallel concatenated convolutional codes (PCCCs) is utilized. The network performance is evaluated in terms of bit error probability (BEP). From the simulation results, it is demonstrated that turbo coding offers considerable coding gain with reasonable encoding and decoding complexity. Also, it is confirmed that the performance of such an optical CDMA network can be substantially improved by increasing the interleaver length and the number of iterations in the decoding process. The results of this paper can be applied to implement the satellite broadcasting communications.

  • In this paper, we introduce three kinds of simplified high-speed decoding algorithms for turbo product decoder. First, A parallel decoder structure, the row and column decoders operate in parallel, is proposed. Second, HAD(Hard Decision Aided) algorithm is used for early-stopping algorithm. Lastly, P-Parallel TPC decoder is a parallel decoding scheme, processing P rows and P columns in parallel instead of decoding one by one as that in the original scheme.

  • This paper presents inter-cell cooperation methods with two transmit antennas for broadcast services in a coded OFDM cellular system. In the method, cells are divided into multiple cell groups and a coded packet is partitioned into the subparts. Then, a different cell group and antenna combination is assigned to each subpart for transmission of two orthogonal branches of the diversity code. For the method, we derive the bound on the pairwise error probability to predict the coded performance and verify the performance gain of the proposed method through the simulation using turbo code and analytically derived bound.

  • In this paper, we propose a high speed block turbo code decoding algorithm and an efficient hardware architecture. The multimedia wireless data communication systems need channel codes which have the high-performance error correcting capabilities. Block turbo codes support variable code rates and packet sizes, and show a high performance due to a soft decision iteration decoding of turbo codes. However, block turbo codes have a long decoding time because of the iteration decoding and a complicated extrinsic information operation. The proposed algorithm using the threshold that represents a channel information reduces the long decoding time. After the threshold is decided by a simulation result, the proposed algorithm eliminates the calculation for the bits which have a good channel information and assigns a high reliability value to the bits. The threshold is decided by the absolute mean and the standard deviation of a LLR(Log Likelihood Ratio) in consideration that the LLR distribution is a gaussian one. Also, the proposed algorithm assigns '1', the highest reliable value, to those bits. The hardware design result using verilog HDL reduces a decoding time about 30% in comparison with conventional algorithm, and includes about 20K logic gate and 32Kbit memory sizes.

  • The performance of turbo-like codes highly depends on their frame size and thus, the bit error rate performance of turbo-like codes can be improved by increasing the frame size. Unfortunately, increasing the frame size of channel codes induces some drawbacks such as the increase of not only encoding and decoding complexity but also transmission and decoding latencies. On the other hand, a faster than Nyquist (FTN) transmission causes intentional inter-symbol interference (ISI) and thus, induces some correlation among the transmission symbols. In this paper, we propose an FTN transmission with multiple channel codes. By exploiting the correlation among the modulated symbols, multiple code frames can be regarded as a code frame with a lager frame size. Due to the inherent parallel encoding scheme of proposed scheme, parallel decoding can be easily implemented.

  • This paper examines the potential of Ultra-High Definition TV (UD-TV) broadcasting transmission systems beyond HD-TV over cable channel. Firstly, we analyze the trend of TOV(Threshold of Visibility) by extending the OpenCable (J.83 Annex B) system 256QAM which is the standard of Korean and American cable television transmission to 1024QAM, and realize that the OpenCable 1024QAM has nearly 30% higher data rate than 256QAM at the expense of impractically higher TOV (Threshold of Visibility). To achieve practical TOV, we control code rates of inner convolutional coder and replace turbo coder in forward error correction (FEC) part, thereby analyzing the best performance of the OpenCable systems having conventional FEC. In that result, it is necessary to modify conventional FEC of the OpenCable system to achieve under 31.5dB TOV. Moreover we study the potential of UD-TV transmission via two or more TV channels, so called channel bonding, through the Shannon capacity in 6MHz channel and the relationship with next generation A/V codec technologies.

  • A multiple input multiple output orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (MIMO-OFDM) system using low-density parity-check (LDPC) code and iterative decoding is presented. The iterative decoding is performed by combining the zero-forcing technique and LDPC decoding through the use of the 'turbo principle.' The proposed system is shown to be effective with high order modulation and outperforms the space frequency block code (SFBC) method with iterative decoding.

  • In this paper, performance of a turbo-coded PLC system is analyzed and simulated in a power line communication channel. Since the power line communication system typically operates in a hostile environment, turbo code has been employed to enhance reliability of transmitted data. The performance is evaluated in terms of bit error probability. As turbo decoding algorithms, Max-Log-MAP algorithms are chosen and performances are compared. The results in this paper can be applied to OFDM-based high-speed power line communication systems
