  • In the Netherlands, Streefland(Elbers, 2003) gave a solution on how teachers can help students to participate in the process of knowledge construction by investigating constructions and activities of a community of inquiry for a primary school students(between 11 and 13 years of age). In Australia, Goos(2004) analyzed the teacher's role in creating a classroom culture of inquiry, which appeared to be taken for granted by the Grade 12 group, for the Grade 11 students by classroom observation and interviews. In Korea, because of diverse obstacles with a university entrance examination, a study about teacher's role in inquiry-oriented instruction for high school mathematics schooling has rarely appeared in the literature. The purpose of this study is to investigate teacher's role for promoting and managing inquiry-oriented mathematics instruction effectively by a case study. To fulfill this purpose, we develop inquiry-oriented instruction model by investigating teacher's role as an assistant for helping students to do mathematical activity.

  • The purpose of this study is to inquire the properties and relationship of attitudes toward science and process skills of preservice elementary teachers. Two instruments were used to collect the data, SAS(Science Attitude Scales) for checking up attitude toward science and TIPS II(Test of Integrated Process Skill II) for inspecting science process skills. Three main results were revealed. First, preservice elementary teachers' the attitude toward science and science process skills could not show the significant differences by gender. This result is differ from the results of preceding researches which had set up the students of elementary, middle and high school as objects. Second, the properties of preservice elementary teachers' the attitude toward science and science process skills according to the course in high school were also differ from those of preceding researches having students as objects. The preservice elementary teachers who got the literary courses in high school were more confident in science learning and perform that those who have the academic background of science courses in high school. In addition, although they showed better abilities in two sub-scales of science process skills, the preservice teachers with science course didn't show the better science process skills than those who had taken the literary course in total score of science process skill test. Third, there was a significant relationship between attitude toward science and science process skills of preservice elementary teachers but just one sub-scale was related with science process skills. According to these results, it can be said that the preceding results with students as objects can not be applied to and preservice elementary teachers should be guided by the methods which are considering their special properties.

  • The purpose of this study was to investigate how 'free inquiry' was implemented in middle school science classrooms. In order to do this, survey and interviews were administered. The subject of survey was 165 science teachers at 58 middle schools and interviewees were 4 teachers and 10 students. As a result, 49.6% of science teachers in school year 2010, and 34.1% in 2011 applied 'free inquiry'. Teachers applied 'free inquiry' during one semester, and they let the students select topic of 'free inquiry'. Teachers grouped students according to students' opinion or their gender and ability, and one group was consisted of 4 students. The effect of applying 'free inquiry' was that students improved the interest on science, science inquiry ability and self directed learning capability. Students were interested in doing 'free inquiry', and they wanted to do it again. Teachers claimed that it took much time and effort to apply 'free inquiry', and students lacked science inquiry skills and interest on science. The teachers who did not apply 'free inquiry' stated reasons such as the shortage of instructional time, and they didn't think that 'free inquiry' should be implemented. For the effective implementation of 'free inquiry', this study suggested that teachers should be recognized the intention of 'free inquiry', teaching-learning materials about 'free inquiry' be developed and provided, and laboratory assistants be employed.

  • In this study, the 'extended science investigation' was conceptualized as a comprehensive science investigation contrasted with exercise of process and skill component and cookbook style experiment. The extended investigation tasks can be characterized with practical context. openness and continuity. The purpose of this study is to describe the change of students' cognitive engagement while they perform the extended science investigations and to explore how the characteristics of the extended investigation tasks affect the students' cognitive engagement. 128 7th graders attending coeducational school in Seoul were participated in this study. The questionnaire was implemented repeatedly to monitor students' cognitive engagement. And ten students were interviewed to explore the cause of the change of cognitive engagement. The result showed that there was no difference between directive traditional investigations in textbook and developed extended investigations in understanding of the content and whole process of investigations but participants' commitment was increased significantly in the extended science investigations. Especially the extent of students' understanding and commitment became higher in the second half than in the first half of the extended science investigations. The openness of the extended investigation tasks contributed on the increase of commitment. And the continuity of the tasks contributed on the increase of students' understanding in the second half of the extended science investigations.

  • Secondary school science teachers' preception on inquiry learning was investigated by using questionnaires. According to these results, science teachers, who are participants of the current Korea National Science Curriculum, responded that raising the 'interest in science' was the most important objective of science education, and using practical scientific subject matters in class will do such. More than 72% of science teachers have used reconstructed materials. When reconstructed textbook contents were used, teachers through that the most important object is the 'acquirement of scientific knowledge'. Most science teachers perceived inquiry leaning as a student centered open investigation. Among factors that disturb inquiry leaning, critical ones were 'entrance examination', 'lake of teaching-leaning materials', 'little understanding of inquiry leaning', and 'lake of student's will to inquiry'.
