Quality Increase of Mortar that Uses Cyclic Aggregate and Blast Furnace Slag Due To Changes in Desulfurized Plaster Processing Method (탈황석고의 처리방법 변화에 따른 순환골재와 고로슬래그를 사용한 모르타르의 품질향상)

  • In this research the processing method of Desulfurized Plaster is changed to cyclotomy, 0.3mm sieve analysis and 500℃ heat exposure, and by changing the mix rate of the binding agent to 0~20%, it was applied to mortar that used cyclic aggregate and blast furnace slag for testing. The test results showed that the flow decreased in the order of cyclotomy, high heat exposure, and sieve analysis according to the mix rate of FGD, and while the air volume decreased for cyclotomy, it was shown to have almost no effect on sieve analysis and high heat exposure. The setting time accelerated as the mixing rate of FGD increased, and the compression strength increased as the mixing rate of FGD increased and especially showed a high trend with cyclotomy and sieve analysis.

  • Recently amongst Korea's construction companies there has been heightened interest in environment load reduction and resource recycling. As a result, the construction industry is examining recycled materials alternative to cement and blast-furnace slag (BS henceforth) cement, such as waste refractories and desulfurized plaster. This study analyzes the liquidity and intensity characteristics of mortar according to changes in replacement ratios of waste refractories and desulfurized plaster, used as industry by-products in mortar environments that use BS 3-type cements and circulated fine aggregate. As a result, the greater the increase in replacement ratios of desulfurized plaster, the greater the increase in liquidity and air quantity, as well as compression strength.

  • Flue gas desulfurization(FGD) is an effective technique to remove $SO_2$ gases of coal-fired plants. Limestone is usually used as desulfurizing agent. In this study, we use the limestone sludge which is a by-product of steel industry in order to replace desulfurizing agent of FGD process. Physical and chemical characteristics analysis of desulfurizing agent was conducted. Desulfurizing agent using limestone sludge was fabricated by pre-treatment process and, then the agent was used on FGD process. Consequently, the tendency on the $SO_2$ concentration did not appear. And limestone sludge was considered as possible alternative agent for flue gas desulfurization process through absorber control system.

Characteristics of Direct Aqueous Carbonation Reaction Using Incinerated Ash and Industrial By-Products (소각재 및 산업부산물을 이용한 직접 수성탄산화 반응 특성)

  • In order to better understand carbon dioxide recycling, the carbon dioxide capture characteristics of six different alkaline industrial by-products, including incineration ash, desulfurized gypsum, low-grade quicklime, and steelmaking slag were investigated using a laboratory-scale direct aqueous carbonation reactor. In addition to the dissolution characteristics of each sample, the main reaction structure was confirmed through thermogravimetric analysis before and after the reaction, and the reactive CaO content was also defined through thermogravimetric analysis. The carbon dioxide capture capacity and efficiency of quicklime were determined to be 473 g/kg and 86.9%, respectively, and desulfurized gypsum and incineration ash were also evaluated to be relatively high at 51.1 to 131.7 g/kg and 51.2 to 87.7%, respectively. On the other hand, the capture efficiency of steelmaking slag was found to be less than 10% due to the influence of the production and post-cooling conditions. Therefore, in order to apply the carbonation process to steelmaking slag, it is necessary to optimize the slag production conditions. Through this study, it was confirmed that the carbon dioxide capture characteristics of incineration ash, quicklime, and desulfurized gypsum are at levels suitable for carbonation processes. Furthermore, this study was able to secure basic data for resource development technology that utilize carbon dioxide conversion to produce calcium carbonate for construction materials.

Applicability analysis of carbondioxide conversion capture materials produced by desulfurization gypsum for cement admixture (시멘트 혼합재로서 정유사 탈황석고를 활용하여 제조한 탄산화물의 적용성 분석)

  • In this study, microstructure and basic property analysis of DG (Desulfurization gypsum) and CCMs (Carbondioxide conversion capture materials) made by reacting CO2 with DG were conducted to analyze applicability as a cement admixture. The main crystalline phases of DG were CaO and CaSO4, and CCMs were CaSO4, CaCO3, Ca(OH)2 and CaSO4·H2O. As a result of particle size analysis, the difference in average particle sizes between the two materials was about 7 ㎛. No major heavy metals were detected in the CCMs, and as a result o f TGA, the CO2 decomposition of CCMs was more than twice as high as that of DG. Therefore, it was judged that CCMs could be used as a cement admixture through optimization of manufacturing conditions. As a results of measuring the strength behavior of DG and CCMs mixture ratios, the long-term strength of CCMs-mixed mortar was higher, and this is due to the filler effect of CaCO3 in CCMs.

Preparation of Calcium Sulfate α-Hemihydrate from FGD Gypum in the Autoclave (가압반응기를 이용한 배연탈황석고로부터 α형 반수석고의 생성)

  • This study was performed to investigate the formation process of calcium sulfate ${\alpha}$-hemihydrate from FGD gypsum produced at thermal power plant burning bituminous coal. The experimental results showed that calcium sulfate $\alpha$-hemihydrate with a large aspect ratio was produced in the temperature range of $120^{\circ}C$ and $140^{\circ}C$ in the absence of additives through dissolution-recrystallization mechanism. It was also observed that addition of Na-succinate as a catalyst changed crystal shape from acicular to prismatic, resulting in decreased water/powder ratio down to 33%. Optimum concentration of Na-succinate was 20mM. It was confirmed that the optimum moulding pressure and moisture content of moulded body from FGD gypsum were $30kg_f/cm^2$ and between 10% and 15% respectively, which prevent moulded body from collapsing and maximize the capillary effect by given pore volume while autoclaving.

  • CaO-based by-product, which consist of CaO, $SO_3$, $Al_2O_3$ and so on, has being used to raw materials of CaO compound. When It was applied to recycling water of remicon, concrete performance can be enhanced because hydration reaction of powder material is accelerated. In this study, activated-sludge, which was putted desulfurization gypsum of CaO-based in recycling water, was manufactured to verify effect of them, and then they was investigated by characteristics of cement matrix and mortar. As a results, they indicated reduction of setting time and high soundness in cement matrix, and acceleration of hydration reaction can be verified by XRD analysis. Also, it can be maintained good workability if water content by usage of desulfurization gypsum, which used for production of activated-sludge, was adjusted. In addition, it can be verified strength development by activated-sludge although cement content by usage of desulfurization gypsum was reduced.

Application on the CFBC Fly Ash as a Stimulant to Improve the Early Strength of Hydration Portland Cement (슬래그시멘트 초기강도 증진을 위한 자극제로서 CFBC Fly ash의 활용연구)

  • As the circulating fluidized bed combustor(CFBC) boilers system to generate electric power increase in order to reduce environmental pollution, a lot of CFBC fly ashes(CFFA) are produced. CFFA has limited use in concrete because it contains free CaO, which can cause cement expansion and rapid initial hydration. In this study, the microstructure and the initial development of compressive strength characteristics were experimentally analyzed to be used as a stimulant to replace natural gypsum by mixing with CFFA and phosphate gypsum to enhance the initial strength of portland blast furnace slag cement. The recycled gypsum was used as flue-gas desulfurization gypsum and phosphate gypsum. Experimental results show that the initial strength development is relatively lower when CFFA and dihydrate gypsum are mixed, but the strength improvement effect of the mixture with CFFA and anhydrous gypsum as an anhydritedII typed crystalized gypsum is similar to that of natural gypsum. As a result, it w as analyzed to have high possibility of use for stimulant of portland blast furnace slag cement.

Properties and Mock-up Test of Lightweight Foamed Concrete Based on Blast Furnace Slag by Crack Reducing Admixture (팽창성 균열저감제를 이용한 고로슬래그 미분말 기반 경량기포 콘크리트의 특성 및 목업실험)

  • This study is to develop a high quality lightweight foamed concrete that can be applied in the field using EXFG by cracking reducing agent combined with FGD and ALS. First, to increase the volume of foam, the flow and density of the mixture was increased and decreased, respectively. At this time, the effect of substitution ratio of EXFG on fluidity was negligible. The fraction of foam was the highest at EXFG 1%, and the settlement was found to be prevented by the expansion reaction at EXFG 1%. At this time, the ratio of foam was 65%. In the compressive strength, the strengths were similar or decreased when the substitution ratio of EXFG was more than 1%. The apparent density satisfied the KS 0.5 type at the bubble contents was 65%. In case of EXFG substitution, dry shrinkage was decreased by about 10%. As the substitution ratio of EXFG increased, the thermal conductivity increased proportionally.
