Pacific Coast Tissue Bank, U.S.A.)
The Stone Monument of Taejong King in Heonreung Royal Tomb, Seoul was originally erected in 1424 to pay a tribute to Bang Won Lee's achievement who was named Taejong, the Third King of Joseon Dynasty. The monument has been damaged by Japanese Invasion of Korea in 1592 so that another monument was newly made and erected together with the original monument in 1695. The original monument was made of medium-grained biotite granite for the turtle base and medium-grained milky white crystalline limestone for the stele body and the top stone. The turtle base of the original monument is destroyed beyond the original shape and inscription due to irregular shaped breaking and a set of longitudinal crack. Analyzing the deterioration degree by using nondestructive methods, the 88 percentage of the front area and 38 percentage of the back area of the monument are damaged, and the lower part of the stele body is dominantly deteriorated especially due to the combination of discoloration and physical deterioration. The new monument in 1695 is also made of granite and limestone. The weathering indices of the turtle base and stele body stones by the calculation from ultrasonic velocity are 0.10 and 0.74, respectively. This is because the original monument is presumed to be degraded by heat shock and physical attack during the Japanese war, and the long-term outdoor exposure accelerated the weathering of the monument afterward without protective shelter.
Objectives: The object of this experiment was to evaluate the effect of sleep deprivation on mood states of normal adults using a subjective scale and an objective scale, minimizing the effect of other factors other than that of sleep deprivation. Methods: Seventy volunteers were first participated in this sleep deprivation schedule, and 36 of them completed this experiment. The subjects and the control group members were all in their early 20's (mean $age=20.8{\pm}1.35$ vs $20.6{\pm}1.10$) and in good health. A log was checked by these subjects from a week before the laboratory study started. Drugs, alcohol and beverages containing any caffeine had been prohibited for a week before and during sleep deprivation periods. The study was performed only in summer to control other factors like sunlight, temperature and moisture. Before this experiment, the subjects had slept adequately for a week at least. On day 1 of the experiment the subjects got up at 6 a.m. and stayed in a sleep laboratory without sunlight or external noises. They could only go about their daily routines. They were forbidden to have a nap and be drowsy. GVA (Global Vigor and Affect) and MADRS (Montgomery-Asberg Depression Rating Scale) were checked 11 times. The data was analysed focusing on the changing mood states. Results: The mood during sleep deprivation became worse as the sleep deprivation time progressed. Especially 20 hours ($GA=59.25{\pm}8.06$, $MADRS=3.43{\pm}1.25$) and 40 hours ($GA=38.83{\pm}9.22$, $MADRS=6.08{\pm}1.46$) after sleep deprivation, there were significant changes compared to the control group ($MADRS=6.08{\pm}1.46$ vs $1.07{\pm}1.18$, p<0.001). Conclusions: While controlling factors other than sleep deprivation might have had some influence on mood changes, significant mood changes during sleep deprivation were observed. The mood states became worse as the sleep deprivation progressed.
To investigate exhausted-medium-induced apoptosis in human corneal epithelial(HCE) cells, this study was performed DNA gel electrophoresis, M30 CytoDEATH staining and FAS-FAS ligand ELISA. SV-40 transfected cells were grown to confluency in culture for 7days. The supernatant was harvested and filtered with $0.22{\mu}m$ filter paper. Fresh HCE cells were exposed to the filtered exhausted medium for 1~2 days. Apoptotic cells were prepared for DNA extraction and run the agarose gel for DNA ladder pattern. M30 CytoDEATH was used a tool for easy and reliable determination of very early apoptosis in HCE cells. The control and exhausted medium were assayed for soluble FAS/FAS ligand protein by ELISA. HCE cells exposed to exhausted medium showed a typical DNA ladder pattern. Sporadic M30 CytoDEATH positive cells were detected among HCE cells exposed to exhausted medium. Soluble FAS/FAS ligand levels were not elevated in the exhausted medium compared to the fresh medium control. This study suggests that possible mechanism of exhausted medium induced apoptosis does not include the FAS-FAS ligand system.
A 5-month-old intact female Siberian Husky dog was presented for evaluation of severely enlarged maxilla. Abnormalities in CBC, serum chemistry and urinalysis indicated purulent inflammation and renal failure. Cytologic examination of the swollen maxilla showed a mixed population of multinucleated giant cells and round to polygonal to spindle shaped cells either individualized or aggregated. Both type of cells showed moderate anisokaryosis, and anisocytosis, prominent nucleolus or multiple nucleoli, and coarse chromatin. On histopathology maxilla and turbinate were diffusely expanded and replaced by variably dense fibrous connective tissue, and the kidneys showed changes consistent with renal dysplasia. Based on these findings, the diagnosis of fibrous osteodystrophy due to renal dysplasia and fibrosis was made. Despite the supportive care, the dog continued to decline and was euthanized.

Fabrication of complete denture with suction mechanism was introduced to enhance the retention and stability of denture by sealing around the denture border by forming negative pressure on the inner side of denture base during functional movement such as swallowing or masticating. Mandibular suction dentures reduce denture dislodging force during opening by taking preliminary impression without pressure on retromolar pad area in rest position. In this case, fabrication of complete denture using suction mechanism for an edentulous patient with severe alveolar bone resorption allowed us to clinically enhance retention and stability of denture and improve satisfaction of patient.

In mixed dentition there exists many empty spaces in the arch due to eruption of permanent teeth and exfoliation of primary teeth. The empty spaces makes it difficult to apply fixed orthodontic appliances. Horseshoe Appliance can be used effectively at this stage, holding the whole dentition in one piece. It covers every surface of erupted teeth and prevents extrusion and rotation of single tooth. By using intermaxillary elastic force, remodeling of the alveolar bone is opposite in each arch. In patients who were treated with horseshoe appliance, forward growth of maxilla, labioversion of maxillary incisors and linguoversion of mandibular incisors were obtained. Minimum downward and clockwise rotation of mandible was shown, so increasing anterior facial height was minimized.

In a conventional magnetic abrasive polishing process, the polishing abrasives are mixed with ferrous particles and slight cutting oil to form a cluster of abrasives. However, when a tool rotates at a high revolution speed, most of the polishing abrasives are scattered away from it due to the increase in centrifugal force. This phenomenon directly reduces the polishing efficiency. The use of a highly viscous matter such as silicone gel instead of cutting oil for mixing is one method to solve this problem and increase abrasive adhesion. Another method to avoid high abrasive scattering is the application of wet magnetic abrasive polishing (WMAP). In WMAP, abundant mineral oil is preliminarily applied to the workpiece surface. This study experimentally evaluated the effect of WMAP on abrasive adhesion. The relationship between the amount of working abrasives and polishing conditions was characterized. Despite the lower adhesion ratio of polishing abrasives, the surface roughness was found to be significantly improved as the result of WMAP.
A protective effect of activated charcoal against the acute lead poisoning of kidney was studied in mile. Mice approximately 30 gm in weight were grouped into the control, lead acetate-treated, and activated charcoal-treated after lead acetate groups. Lead acetate (60 mg/kg) and activated charcoal (40mg/kg) were delivered orally. Serum AST, ALT and glucose were measured and the ultrastructural alteration of liver was examined by electron microscopy. Activated charcoal decreased the increase of serum AST, ALT and glucose levels induced by lead. Lead acetate-treated hepatic cells characterized by irregular nuclei, enlarged and reduced number of mitochodria, enlarged rough endoplasmic reticulum, loss of riboscomes. Cells treated with activated charcoal were similar to those of the control group. In conclusion, activated charcoal may protect the lead-induced toxicity on liver.

Since minerals are in ionic forms in aqueous phase (like deep sea water), it is very hard to incorporate concentrated minerals in gel like cosmetic formulations which are generally composed of carbomer or acrylates polymer. In this study, we invented a salt-resistant network formulation made of silicon copolyol. It was found that the network formulation traps minerals (especially from marine) in a mesh-like silicone copolyol structure. Since the mineral-containing formulation makes a very thin film on the skin, minerals could be easily absorbed into stratum corneum. In 6 weeks in vivo test, it was found that the novel mineral formulation increased the amounts of amino acids, major components of natural moisturizing factors (NMFs), as well as levels of minerals. It was also found that the moisture contents and the brightness of the skin increased.
