Recently, fiber-reinforced plastic(FRP) wraps are blown as an effective material for the enhancement and rehabilitation of aged concrete structures. The purpose of this investigation is to experimentally investigate behavior of concrete cylinder wrapped with FRP materials. Experimental parameters include compressive strength of concrete cylinder, FRP material, and confinement ratio. This paper presents the results of experimental studies on the performance of concrete cylinder specimens externally wrapped with aramid, carbon and glass fiber reinforced Polymer sheets. Test specimens were loaded in uniaxial compression. Axial load, axial and lateral strains were investigated to evaluate the stress-strain behavior, ultimate strength ultimate strain etc. Test results showed that the concrete strength and confinement ratio, defined as the ratio of transverse confinement stress and transverse strain were the most influential factors affecting the stress-strain behavior of confined concrete. More FRP layers showed the better confinement by increasing the compressive strength of test cylinders. In case of test cylinders with higher compressive strength, FRP wraps increased the compressive strength but decreased the compressive sham of concrete test cylinders, that resulted in prominent brittle failure mode. The failure of confined concrete was induced by the rupture of FRP material at the stain, being much smaller than the ultimate strain of FRP material.

In case of retrofitting a concrete structure subjected to blast load by using retrofit materials such as FRP (fiber-reinforced polymer), appropriate ductility as well as raising stiffness must be obtained. But the previous approximate and simplified models, which have been generally used in the design and analysis of structures subjected to blast load, cannot accurately consider effects on retrofit materials. Problems on the accuracy and reliability of analysis results have also been pointed out. In addition, as the response of concrete and reinforcement on dynamic load is different from that on static load, it is not appropriate to use material properties defined in the previous static or quasi-static conditions to in calculating the response on the blast load. In this study, therefore, an accurate HFPB (high fidelity physics based) finite element analysis technique, which includes material models considering strength increase, and strain rate effect on blast load with very fast loading velocity, has been suggested using LS-DYNA, an explicit analysis program. Through the suggested analysis technique, the behavior on the blast load of retrofitted concrete walls using CFRP (carbon fiber-reinforced polymer) and GFRP (glass fiber-reinforced polymer) have been analyzed, and the retrofit capacity analysis has also been carried out by comparing with the analysis results of a wall without retrofit. As a result of the analysis, the retrofit capacity showing an approximate $26{\sim}28%$ reduction of maximum deflection, according to the retrofit, was confirmed, and it is judged ate suggested analysis technique can be effectively applicable in evaluating effectiveness of retrofit materials and techniques.
The main purpose of this study is to develop a sprayed FRP repair and strengthening method, which is a new technique for strengthening the existing concrete structures by mixing one of the carbon or glass chopped fibers and one of the epoxy or vinyl ester resins with high-speed compressed air in open air and randomly spraying the mixture onto the concrete surface. At present, the sprayed FRP repair and strengthening method using the epoxy resin has not been fully discussed. In order to investigate the material property of the sprayed FRP, this study carried out tensile tests of the material specimens, which were changed with the combinations of various variables including the length of chopped fiber and the mixture ratio of chopped fiber and resin. These variables were set to have the equal material strength, compared with that of one layer of the FRP sheet. As a result, the optimal length of glass and carbon chopped fibers was fumed out to be 38 mm, and the optimal mixture ratio between chopped fiber and resin was also turned out to be 1 : 2 from each variable. And also, the thickness of the sprayed FRP to have the equal strength to one layer of the FRP sheet was finally calculated. In is study, a series of experiments were carried out to evaluate the strengthening effects of flexural beams, shear beams and damaged beams strengthened with the sprayed FRP method, respectively. The results revealed that the strengthening effects of the flexural and shear specimens were reasonably similar to those of the FRP sheet, and the developed Sprayed FRP technique is able to be used as a strengthening scheme of existing RC building.
In this study, the effect of laminate thickness on the compressive behaviour of composite materials is investigated through systematic experimental work using the stacking sequences, $[O_4]_{ns},{\;}[45/0/-45/90]_{ns}$ and $[45_n/0_n/-45_n/90_n]_s$ (n=2 to 8). Parameters such as fibre volume fraction, void content, fibre waviness and interlaminar stresses, influencing compressive strength with increasing laminate thickness are also studied experimentally and theoretically. Furthermore the stacking sequence effects on failure strength of multidirectional laminates are examined. For this purpose, two different scaling techniques are used; (1) ply-level technique $[45_n/0_n/-45_n/90_n]s$ and (2) sublaminate level technique $[45/0/-45/90]_{ns}$. An apparent thickness effect existes in the lay-up with blocked plies, i.e. unidirectional specimens ($[O_4]_{ns}) and ply-level scaled multidirectional specimens ($[45_n/0_n/-45_n/90_n]_s$). Fibre waviness and void content are found to be main parameters contributing to the thickness effect on the compressive failure strength. However, the compressive strength of the sublaminate level scaled specimens ($[45/0/-45/90]_{ns}$) is almost unaffected regardless of the specimen thickness (since ply thickness remains constant). From the investigation of the stacking sequence effect, the strength values obtained from the sublaminate level scaled specimens are slightly higher than those obtained from the ply level scaled specimens. The reason for this effect is explained by the fibre waviness, void content, free edge effect and stress redistribution in blocked $0^{\circ}$ plies and unblocked $0^{\circ}$ plies. The measured failure strengths are compared with the predicted values.
Carbon fiber reinforced plastic (CFRP), one of lightweight materials, is the fiber structure using carbon fiber. It is the composite material that has the characteristics of carbon and plastic. As for the fiber structure, it has the great strength due to fiber direction. CFRP for woven type is used mostly as such a CFRP with lightweight. Woven type is more stable when compared with unidirectional type. On the other hand, woven type is highly priced. Therefore, this study aims to analyze the fiber structure of unidirectional CFRP. In this study, as the stacking angle [0/X/-X/0], X is the variable. This is unidirectional CFRP in which the angle phase of X has been reversed and stacked. By using such a unidirectional CFRP, the analysis model which had a crack at the center as the form of panel with the thickness of 2 mm was used. On analysis, the load is applied on the upper and lower parts being connected with a pin. The damage in the area near center crack was investigated. As for the analysis model, 3D surface model was designed by using CATIA. For CFRP stacking, the stacking direction was determined by using ACP in ANSYS program and the analysis model with two stacks was made. Afterwards, the structural analysis was carried out.
In the present work, electroless plating was used for coating thin films consisting mainly of Ni and P on carbon fiber. Structural changes appeared upon the post-annealing at various temperatures of the Ni-P film on carbon fiber was studied using various analysis methods. Scanning, a flat surface structure of Ni-P film on carbon fiber was found after electroless plating of Ni-P film on carbon fiber without post-annealing, whereas annealing at $350^{\circ}C$ resulted the formation of porous structures. With increasing the annealing temperature to $650^{\circ}C$ with an interval of $50^{\circ}C$, the pore size increased, but the density decreased. X-ray diffraction (XRD) showed the existence of metallic Ni, and Ni-P compounds before post-annealing, whereas the post-annealing resulted in the appearance of NiO peaks, and the decrease in the intensity of the peak of metallic Ni. Using X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), phosphorous oxides were detected on the surface upon annealing at $650^{\circ}C$, and $700^{\circ}C$, which can be attributed to the phosphorous compounds originally existing in the deeper layers of the Ni films, which undergo sublimation and escape from the film upon annealing. Escape of phosphorous species from the bulk of Ni-P film upon annealing could leave a porous structure in the Ni films. Porous materials can be of potential applications in diverse fields due to their interesting physical properties such as high surface area, and methods for fabricating porous Ni films introduced here could be easily applied to a large-scale production, and therefore applicable in diverse fields such as environmental filters.
To examine the mechanical and combustion characteristics of FRTP, either polycarbonate or nylon were used as a matrix, and either glass fiber or carbon fiber were used as the fiber reinforcement. The fiber reinforcement content was differentiated at 0~40 wt%. The tensile strength and heat distortion temperature increased with increasing reinforcement content. When the fiber reinforcement content was above 30 wt%, the flammability rating showed V-0. As the fiber reinforcement content increased from 0 to 40 wt%, the peak heat release rate of polycarbonate decreased by approximately 51% and that of nylon decreased by approximately 24%. The rate of CO generation decreased for a period of time, and then increased. This appears to have resulted from incomplete combustion. The rate of CO2 generation shows a similar tendency with the heat release rate. As fiber reinforcement content levels increased from 0 to 40 wt%, the CO2 peak rate of polycarbonate generation decreased by approximately 50% and that of nylon decreased by 28%.

CFRP is often used as lightweight hull material for luxury yachts or special-service ships. An electric propulsion system is also eco-friendly, and has been trialled to equip a small vessel as its main propulsion. In this study, replacing the hull materials and propulsion system with CFRP and electric motors, we made an estimate of the effect of weight reduction and compared it to the original design, for this purpose a case study was conducted on a 45-ft yacht. When redesigning structures with CFRP, we applied the reinforcement content of the carbon fiber in the same way as the original (GC = 0.4), and when changing to the electric propulsion system, we designed motors and battery packs to achieve the same performance as the original. The result showed that CFRP and the electric propulsion system could make the structural and machinery weights 45 % and 58 % lighter, respectively. However, in terms of efficiency, it was confirmed that the electric propulsion system is practically inefficient because it requires a huge amount of battery packs for the same navigation range with diesel engines.
Structural battery has been researched extensively to combine the functions of the battery and structure without gravimetric or volumetric increments compared to their individual components. The main idea is to employ carbon fabric as the reinforcement and electrode, glass fabric as the separator, and solid-state electrolyte which can transfer load. However, state-of-the-art solid-state electrolytes do not have sufficient load carrying functionality and exhibiting appropriate ion conductivity simultaneously. Therefore, in this research, a system which has both battery and load carrying capabilities using glass fabric separator and liquid electrolyte was devised and tested to investigate the potential and feasibility of this structural battery system and observe electric properties. It was observed that elongating separator decreased electrical behavior stability. A possible cause of this phenomenon was the elongated glass fabric separator inadequately preventing the penetration of small particles of the cathode material into the anode. This problem was verified additionally by using a commercial separator. The characteristic of the glass fabric and the interface between the electrode and glass fabric needed to be further studied for the realization of such a load carrying structural battery system.

Compared to metal, CFRP has excellent mechanical characteristics in terms of intensity, hardness, and heat resistance as well as its light weight that it is used widely in various fields. Therefore, this material has been used recently in the aerospace field. On the other hand, the material has shortcomings in terms of its extreme vulnerability to damage occurring internally from an external impact. This study examined the intensity up to its destruction from repeated use with the internal impact of a CFRP laminated plate that had also been exposed to external impact obtain design data for the external plate of aircraft used in the aerospace field. For the experimental method, regarding the quasi-isotopic type CFRP specimen and orthotropic CFRP specimen that are produced with a different layer structure, steel spheres with a diameter of 5 mm were collided to observe the resulting impact damage. Through a 3-point flexural fatigue experiment, the progress of internal layer separation and impact damage was observed. Measurements of the flexural fatigue strength after the flexural fatigue experiment until internal damage occurs and the surface impacted by the steel spheres revealed the quasi-isotopic layer structure to have a higher intensity for both cases.
