Design of an Elastomeric Bearing for a Helicopter Rotor Hub by Non-linear Finite Element Method (비선형 유한요소법을 이용한 헬리콥터 로터허브용 탄성체베어링 설계)

  • In this paper, an elastomeric bearing for a helicopter rotor hub is designed using nonlinear finite element method. The elastomeric bearing is the main component of the helicopter rotor hub that acts as a hinge to three motions(flapping, lagging and pitching) of rotor blade. The elastomeric bearing consists of rubber and metal plates. The stiffness design of the elastomeric bearing is important because elastic deformation of rubber is served to hinge. Accordingly, the elastomeric bearing is designed to satisfy the stiffness requirements for rotor hub bearing. In this study, a FE model generation algorithm is developed and stiffness characteristic of a rubber plate is analyzed for an efficient design of the spherical elastomeric bearing. It is proven that the elastomeric bearing satisfies stiffness requirements of the spherical bearing for a helicopter rotor hub.

Development of a Model for Predicting Modulus on Asphalt Pavements Using FWD Deflection Basins (FWD 처짐곡선을 이용한 아스팔트 포장구조체의 탄성계수 추정 모형 개발)

  • A development of regression model for asphalt concrete pavements using Falling Weight Deflectometer deflections is presented in this paper. A backcalculation program based on layered elastic theory was used to generate the synthetic modulus database, which was used to generate 95% confidence intervals of modulus in each layer. Using deflection basins of FWD data used in developing this procedure were collected from Pavement Management System in flexible pavements. Assumptions of back-calculation are that one is 3 layered flexible pavement structure and another is depth to bedrock is finite. It is found that difference of between 95% confidence intervals and modulus ranges of other papers does not exist. So, the data of 95% confidence intervals in each layer was used to develop multiple regression models. Multiple regression equations of each layer were established by SPSS, package of Statics analysis. These models were proved by regression diagnostics, which include case analysis, multi-collinearity analysis, influence diagnostics and analysis of variance. And these models have higher degree of coefficient of determination than 0.75. So this models were applied to predict modulus of domestic asphalt concrete pavement at FWD field test.

Dynamic Behavior Modelling of Augmented Objects with Haptic Interaction (햅틱 상호작용에 의한 증강 객체의 동적 움직임 모델링)

  • This paper presents dynamic modelling of a virtual object in augmented reality environments when external forces are applied to the object in real-time fashion. In order to simulate a natural behavior of the object we employ the theory of Newtonian physics to construct motion equation of the object according to the varying external forces applied to the AR object. In dynamic modelling process, the physical interaction is taken placed between the augmented object and the physical object such as a haptic input device and the external forces are transferred to the object. The intrinsic properties of the augmented object are either rigid or elastically deformable (non-rigid) model. In case of the rigid object, the dynamic motion of the object is simulated when the augmented object is collided with by the haptic stick by considering linear momentum or angular momentum. In the case of the non-rigid object, the physics-based simulation approach is adopted since the elastically deformable models respond in a natural way to the external or internal forces and constraints. Depending on the characteristics of force caused by a user through a haptic interface and model's intrinsic properties, the virtual elastic object in AR is deformed naturally. In the simulation, we exploit standard mass-spring damper differential equation so called Newton's second law of motion to model deformable objects. From the experiments, we can successfully visualize the behavior of a virtual objects in AR based on the theorem of physics when the haptic device interact with the rigid or non-rigid virtual object.

Elastic Boom Modeling of a Floating Crane based on Finite Element Formulation (유한 요소 정식화를 이용한 해상 크레인 붐(boom)의 탄성체 모델링)

  • 본 논문에서는 해상 크레인과 중량물의 동적 거동을 시뮬레이션하기 위해, 유한 요소 정식화(finite element formulation)를 이용하여 해상 크레인의 붐(boom)을 탄성체로 모델링 하였다. 붐은 3차원 탄성 빔(beam) 요소로 가정하고, 각 요소의 변형에 의한 변위는 형상 함수(shape function)과 절점 좌표(nodal coordinate)를 이용하여 정의하였다. 변형 변위를 이용하여 탄성 붐의 강성 행렬(stiffnes matrix)을 유도하고, 탄성 변위를 포함하는 위치 벡터를 이용하여 질량 행렬을 유도한다. 해상 크레인과 중량물로 이루어진 운동 방정식에 탄성 붐을 포함하여 유연 다물체계(flexible multibody system) 운동 방정식을 구성한다. 외력으로는 선박 유체정역학적 힘, 유체동역학적 힘, wire rope의 장력, 중력 그리고 계류력(mooring force)이 고려되었다. 먼저 요소의 개수를 변경하며 탄성 붐의 동적 거동을 시뮬레이션 하여, 유한 요소 정식화를 이용한 모델링의 타당성을 검증하였다. 그리고 해상 크레인과 중량물의 동적 거동 시뮬레이션에 탄성 붐 모델을 적용하였다.

Implementation of the Resilient Modulus for the Stiff Cohesive Subgrade Soils on a Numerical Analysis (수치해석에 있어 단단한 점성토 노반에 대한 회복탄성계수의 적용)

  • Design and analysis of road subgrade system, which is exposed to repetitive loading condition, uses resilient modulus. The behavior of railway subgrade system will not be quite different from that of road system. Following this phenomenological feature of the subgrade system, this paper introduces the implementation of the resilient modulus based constitutive model on a commercial finite element software. The implementation of the resilient modulus models such as K-${\theta}$ and Uzan on a FE program has been conducted previously. These model assumes that the material state reaches to the nonlinear elastic condition and with further application of repetitive loads, the response of material is completed in elastic condition. According to the recent test results performed on cohesive subgrade soils, however, permanent deformation occurs with repetitive loads. With aids of previously suggested models the permanent deformation cannot be modeled. To overcome such limitation a plastic potential derived from the test results and simple failure criterion based constitutive model is developed. The comparison between the analysis and test results shows a good correlation.

  • The boundary element analysis has been attempted for investigating the singular stress at the interface edge of infinitely layered structure. The subdomain technique has been employed and the analysis model has been divided into two subdomains, which are respectively homogeneous elastic zones. The boundary element equation has been formulated using the equilibrium and continuity conditions at the common interface. The numerical results of example problem has been presented.

  • As various haptic algorithms and haptic equipments have developed, the computer simulation includes the haptic simulation. Basically, the haptic simulation requires very fast refresh rate approximately 1000 Hz. The traditional haptic simulations have satisfied that requirement by simplifying the target model. In soft body simulation, simplifying the deformation is not good because the visual feedback is important. Separating haptic model from deformable model can be solution of that problem. However, the user may feel a subtle distiction because the relationship between two models are not clear. In this paper, we propose the hybrid model to manipulate haptic rendering and deformation and define the relationship between two models.

A Study on Evaluation of Moduli of 3 Layered Flexible Pavement Structures using Deflection Basins (처짐곡선을 이용한 3층 아스팔트 포장 구조체의 물성 추정에 관한 연구)

  • An inverse self-iterative procedure is developed to estimate layer moduli of 3 layered flexible pavement structures from FWD deflection basins. The theoretical deflection basins of pavement structures obtained by full factorial design are used for the parametric study on the characteristics of deflection basins and the regression analysis. The factorial design is performed for asphalt pavement structures with stabilized base layer and granular base layer, respectively. The initially assumed layer moduli by regression equations and relations between the rate of change of moduli and deflections are used in the procedure to ensure efficiency and accuracy of self-iterative model. The SINELA computer program is used for inverse self-iterative applications to determine theoretical responses. The computer program of this procedure is coded for personal computers and is verified through numerical model tests.

Sliding Friction of Elastomer Composites in Contact with Rough Self-affine Surfaces: Theory and Application (자기-아핀 표면 특성을 고려한 유기탄성체 복합재료 마찰 이론 및 타이어 트레드/노면 마찰 응용)

  • This review paper presents an introduction of contact mechanics and rubber friction theory for sliding friction of elastomer composites in contact with rough surfaces. Particularly, Klüppel & Heinrich theory considers the self-affine (or fractal) characteristic for rough surfaces to predict adhesion and hysteresis frictions of elastomers based on the contact mechanics of Greenwood & Williamson. Due to dynamic excitation process of elastomer composites while sliding in contact with multiscale surface roughness (or asperity), viscoelastic properties in a wide frequency range becomes major contributor to friction behaviors. A brief description and examples are provided to construct a viscoelastic master curve considering nonlinear viscoelasticity of elastomer composites. Finally, application of rubber friction theory to tire tread compounds in traction with road surfaces is discussed with several experimental and theoretical results.

  • A new continuum damage theory (CDT) has been proposed by Lee et al. (1996) based on the SEEP. The CDT has the apparent advantage over the other related theories because the complete constitutive law can be readily derived by simply replacing the virgin elastic stiffness with the effective orthotropic elastic stiffness obtained by using the proposed continuum damage theory. In this paper, the CDT is evaluated by the numerical experiment comparing the mode shapes and natural frequencies of a square plate containing a small line-through crack with those of the same plate with a damaged site replaced with the effective orthotropic elastic stiffness computed by using the CDT.
