Effects of Average Power on Laser Cladding of Hypereutectic Al-Si Alloy on Al 1050 Alloy (Al 1050 합금에 과공정 Al-Si 합금의 레이저 클래딩에서 평균출력의 영향에 대한 연구)

  • This study produced hypereutectic Al-Si clad layer on 1050 Al alloy by a novel laser cladding method. Pure Si powder was mixed with organic binder to make fluid paste which could be screen-printed on the 1050 Al alloy plate. Pulsed Nd:YAG laser was irradiated on the Si paste layer to melt and alloy with Al substrate. Different laser power of 99 W, 179 W and 261 W, was used to see the difference of the microstructure, composition and hardness of the clad layers. When laser power of 179 W was used, the clad layer had overall Si content of 38wt% and composed of fine primary Si particles and fine eutectic phase. At laser power of 261 W, the clad layer had overall Si content of 24wt% and composed of mainly fine eutectic phase. Vickers hardness of HV176.7 and HV150.3 on the clad layer was obtained at laser power of 179 W and 261 W, respectively.

  • We propose and fabricate an 1${\times}$2 asymmetric optical switch by TOE using SOI wafer based on silicon which has very large TOE figure and it is a good material for optical devices. SOI wafer consists of 3 layers; upper Si layer for device(waveguide;core, n=3.5), buried oxide layer for insulator(clad, n=1.5) and Si substrate layer. We designed 1${\times}$2 asymmetric y-branched single mode optical waveguide switch by BPM simulation and metal heater by heat transfer simulation. Fabricated switch shows about 3.5 watts of power consumption and over 20dB of crosstalk between output channels.

  • 바이오센서 응용을 위한 대칭 및 비대칭 마하젠더 간섭계 광도파로 소자의 설계, 제작 및 광학적 응답특성을 평가하였다. 설계 제작된 광도파로 소자의 압력광원은 각각 1550nm와 632.8nm이고, 코어와 클래딩의 굴절률차는 0.45 $\Delta$%로 설계 제작하였다. 센서부(상위 클래드)의 금 박막의 미소 굴절률 변화에 따른 TE, TM모드의 특성을 분석하였다. 센서의 보다 높은 감도 개선을 위한 나노-광자결정 구조가 주목받고 있는데, 광자결정 구조의 구현를 위한 리소그래피 공정은 높은 분해능과 신뢰성 있는 나노스케일의 공정이 요구된다. 광-바이오센서의 감도 개선을 위해 센서부 표면에 2차원 나노-광자결정 배열을 제안하고 이를 구현하기 위한 Dip-Pen Nanolithography 공정에 대해 고찰하였다.

A Study on the analytical derivation of the L-I-V characteristics for a SCH QW Laser Diode (SCH 양자우물 레이저 다이오드에 대한 L-I-V 특성의 해석적도출에 관한 연구)

  • By using the thermionic emission model, the L-I-V(power-current-voltage) characteristics of a SCH(seperate confinement heterostructure) QW(quantum well) laser diode is analytically derived. We derived the relationships between the bulk carrier density of SCH regions and the confined carrier density of QW. The L-I-V characteristics is derived analytically by using current continuity equations. Solving the ambipolar diffusion equation under the condition of high level injection and charge neutrality, the current distribution in the SCH regions is considered. Results showed that the major factor affecting the laser I-V characteristics was the change of potential barrier at the cladding-SCH interface. Also the series resistance of a laser diode was decreased and the carrier injection was increased by increasing the forward flux of injection current from cladding to SCH region.

플라즈마 표면처리시 산소 분율의 변화가 기판의 표면에너지와 코팅층과의 계면 부착 특성에 미치는 영향

  • 표면에너지는 계면특성을 지배하는 핵심인자로 디스플레이의 터치 스크린 패널 공정, 이종소재의 접합, 금속의 클래딩 등 실제 산업에 있어서 매우 중요하다. 표면에너지는 코팅과 본딩 이론에 있어서 기본이 되는 물리량으로 표면에너지가 높을수록 코팅 또는 박막 증착시 코팅, 증착이 용이하며 이종소재의 접합도 쉽게 일어난다. 본 연구에서는 플라즈마 표면처리시 산소 분율의 변화에 따른 기판의 표면에너지와 코팅층과 기판의 부착력의 변화에 대해 연구하였다. 연구의 주요 기판으로 ITO, PET 기판을 사용하였고, 표면 에너지 변화를 확인하기 위해 기판을 상온 상압 플라즈마에 노출시켰다. 플라즈마는 아르곤(Ar)의 공급량을 20 LPM으로 고정하고 산소($O_2$)의 공급량을 0 sccm에서 40 sccm 까지 10 sccm 간격으로 변수를 주었다. 표면에너지 값은 기판 위에 형성된 액체의 접촉각을 통해 도출하였다. 표면에너지 측정 액체로 증류수(deionized water)와 디오도메탄(diiodo-methane)을 사용하였다. 표면에너지는 산소분압이 10 sccm에서 최대값인 76 mJ/m2으로 증가한 후 20 sccm까지 유지하다 다시 직선적으로 감소하였다. 기판에 증착된 크롬 박막의 부착력은 스크래치 테스트를 통해 측정하였다. 표면에너지의 증가와 비례하게 부착력은 증가하였고 표면에너지가 감소하는 범위에서는 부착력도 감소하였다. 기판과 코팅층의 부착력 증가 원인 중 하나인 계면 산화물 층의 생성 여부를 알아보기 위해 auger electron spectroscopy (AES) 분석을 진행하였다. AES 분석을 통해 플라즈마 표면처리시 기판과 코팅층의 계면 산화물층의 두께가 표면에너지의 변화와 비례하게 증가하였다가 감소하는 것을 확인하였다. 산소분압이 10 sccm 이었을 경우 산화물층의 두께가 가장 두꺼웠다. 또한 계면의 화학적 결합 상태를 알아보기 위해 X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) 분석을 진행하였으며 산소 분율의 변화에 따라 크롬 산화물의 양이 증가하였다 감소하는것을 확인하였다. 이 연구를 통해 산소를 포함한 플라즈마 표면개질이 기판과 코팅층의 부착력 증가에 영향을 끼침을 확인 할 수 있었다. 또한 이를 응용하여 부착력 증가가 필요한 다양한 분야에서도 쉽게 적용시킬 수 있을 것이다.

Polymeric Ring Resonator with Variable Extinction Ratio (소멸비가 가변되는 폴리머 링 레조네이터)

  • A polymeric ring resonator with electrically variable extinction ratio at resonant wavelengths has been proposed and demonstrated. It consists of a ring waveguide coupled to a straight bus waveguide and a modulating electrode, which is formed in the outer cladding region outside of the ring. When electrical power is applied to the electrode, the refractive index of the polymers underneath the electrode is lowered to strengthen the confinement of the guided mode of the ring and thus the equivalent effective refractive index felt by the mode is decreased. Therefore, the propagation loss of the guided mode is reduced with the applied electrical power Consequently the extinction ratio at resonant wavelengths is varied by the electrical power. For the achieved results, the extinction ratio was changed by about 9 dB for the electrical power of 12 mW, when the propagation loss of the ring was reduced by 80 dB/cm.

Novel dual-grating strain sensor signal processing technique using an unbalanced Mach-Zehnder interferometer (Mach-Zehnder 간섭계를 이용한 광섬유 격자쌍 스트레인 센서의 신호처리 방법)

  • We fabricated a sensor head which consists of spliced different-diameter fiber gratings for discrimination between strain and temperature. Because the fibers were drawn from the same preform, their temperature characteristics were the same but not for strain sensitivities which are inversely proportional to fibers cross-sectional areas. In measurement range of 0-1500$\mu$strain and 20-10$0^{\circ}C$, we could obtain, by using the matrix calculation, the unknown physical quantities within 10% of calculation error compared with the micrometer and thermocouple values. To improve the strain measurement accuracy, we suggest a new, novel method which deploys an unbalanced fiber Mach-Zehnder interferometer. This new signal processing technique converts the strain information to interference signal amplitude variation, temperature-independently. we obtained measurement accuracy nearly 80 times better than that obtainable with the conventional optical spectrum analyzer usage.

  • The present work investigated the dispersion behavior of $Y_2O_3$ particles into AISI 316L SS manufactured using laser cladding technology. The starting particles were produced by high energy ball milling in 10 min for prealloying, which has a trapping effect and homogeneous dispersion of $Y_2O_3$ particles, followed by laser cladding using $CO_2$ laser source. The phase and crystal structures of the cladded alloys were examined by XRD, and the cross section was characterized using SEM. The detailed microstructure was also studied through FE-TEM. The results clearly indicated that as the amount of $Y_2O_3$ increased, micro-sized defects consisted of coarse $Y_2O_3$ were increased. It was also revealed that homogeneously distributed spherical precipitates were amorphous silicon oxides containing yttrium. This study represents much to a new technology for the manufacture and maintenance of ODS alloys.

Measurement of Refractive Index Profile of Optical Fiber Using the Diffraction Phase Microscope (회절위상현미경을 이용한 광섬유의 굴절률 프로파일 측정)

  • We have developed a measurement method of the refractive index profile of an optical fiber by using diffraction phase microscopy. In the microscope system, the reference light was extracted directly from the probe light that passed through the sample by means of pinhole filtering with a diffraction grating. The spatial interference pattern produced by the probe light and the reference light was processed to generate the phase image of the sample fiber. The index profile was obtained by the inverse Abel transform of the phase profile. In order to remove the background phase that originated from the index difference between the cladding and the surrounding medium, the background phase was calculated from the phase data of the cladding to make a core phase profile that can be directly transformed to the index profile of the core without the full phase image that includes the entire cladding part.

  • FBG sensor system is applied to the concrete lining structure in Taegu subway. Near the structure, the power cable tunnel construction started. We wanted to measure the deformation of the structure due to the construction by the FBG sensor. The applied sensor has the gauge length of 1 meter to overcome the inhomogeneity of the concrete material with enough length. In order to fix tightly to the structure, the partially stripped parts of the sensor glued to the package and slip phenomenon between fiber and acrylate jacket was prevented. Prestrain of the sensor was imposed by controlling the two fixed points with bolts and nuts in order to measure compressive strain as well as tensile strain. The behavior of subway lining structure could be monitored very well
