  • One of feasible non-destructivity test methods for evaluation of concrete permeability is the measurement of surface resistivity. But the application to steel fiber-reinforced concrete has been limited because mis-evaluation could be caused by the steel fibers in concrete. In this study, the effect of fiber distribution on surface electrical resistivity of steel fiber-reinforced concrete was investigated through experimental program. Resistivity was measured three times on four surfaces in three rectangular and circular specimens with 0.5%, 1% and 1.5% steel fibers by volume and compared each other. The results obtained from circular specimens were consistent compared to those from rectangular specimens. And the results demonstrated that the effect of fiber distribution on surface resistivity was not significant compared to that of mixing ratio of steel fibers. In conclusion, this non-destructive testing method using measurement of surface resistivity could be used for SFRC within 0.5% steel fibers by volume.

  • In this study, stress and deformation of CFRD during its construction and impounding were analyzed and compared with its monitoring results. Moreover, deformation characteristics of CFRD after impounding were evaluated based on the settlement monitoring records of total 23 domestic and foreign CFRDs during construction and impounding. The investigation on the behavior of CFRD indicated that the influence of impounding on its stability was minimal although slight increases in vertical and horizontal stresses and strains were observed. Also, one method was proposed to predict a crest settlement from multi-layer settlements by applying the best fit method. It is expected that the results of this study would provide practical information for the design, construction, and management of CFRD.

  • Concrete is a material generally used to build structures and it is exposed to various environment conditions. In particular, a medium such as water lets noxious factors flow into concrete, causing a lot of damage. Therefore, different kinds of materials are being developed to increase the durability of concrete. Among such materials, silane and siloxane compound are known to have a high utilization as an absorption inhibitor. However, if aged or deteriorated reinforced concrete is treated with those compounds, they easily come off the concrete and lose their function since the basic material is weak. This study conducted an experiment to provide concrete with both an absorption-inhibiting effect and surface strengthening by using melamine-formaldehyde resins that are surface-treated with siloxane compound. In addition, a study on the porosity and surface hardness characteristics of a concrete was conducted to check the absorption-inhibiting effect and surface strengthening.

  • Recently, the interest is increasing about the exposed concrete, accordingly, exposed concrete is expanding the use. However, concrete structures is difficult to apply the general concrete for exposed concrete, due to complex section and compact reinforcement, increasingly. Therefore, in this paper, for application of high fluidity concrete as exposed concrete, exposed high fluidity concrete using fly ash and lime stone powder was manufactured and observed quality property(fluidity properties, mechanical properties and Surface Properties) of exposed high fluidity concrete. The experiments are based on the OPC and LSP10, was evaluated Impact on the quality of concrete according to mixing ratio of FA(0, 10, 15 and 20). As a result, fluidity properties, mechanical properties and Surface Properties of exposed high fluidity concrete were satisfied to requirement conditions, fluidity and surface finishability was improved depending on mix of fly ash and limestone powder. Through this, we utilize of basic research data for development of high fluidity concrete for exposed concrete.

  • Recently, in retrofit of RC structures using FRP (Fiber Reinforced Polymer), researches about Near-Surface-Mounted Rertofit (NSMR) method have been widely performed. In NSMR, FRP bar is normally inserted in the slit formed in the cover concrete and then bonded by using epoxy mortar. In this paper, the bond characteristic of NSMR using FRP plate instead of bar was studied experimentally. Fracture behavior is observed from bond test using the parameters of embedment length, shear key, and FRP plate layer. In addition, an equation to predict the splitting strength of NSMR using FRP is proposed using the test result. The results showed that when the longer embedment length and more layers of FRP are used, the higher bond strength is achieved. There was a good co-relationship between the test and calculated results using the proposed equation.

  • This study presents the experimental results of frost durability including resistance to freezing-thawing and surface scaling of concrete. Mixing design was proportioned with the various water-binder ratio between 0.37 and 0.47 and three different binder compositions corresponding to Type I cement without any supplementary cementitious materials(OPC), Type II cement with 50% blast-furnace slag replacement(BFS50), and ternary cement with Type III cement, 15% fly ash, and 35% slag replacement (BFS35%+FA15%). Test results showed that the mixing design with BFS50% and BFS35%+FA15% exhibited higher durability factor than that made with OPC only. Finally, the use of blend cement containing slag can be used effectively in terms of frost durability of the concrete exposed to severe condition under coastal environment like as flying salt, sea water spray, etc.

  • The major influence factor on chloride penetration into concrete structures is chloride ion concentration. In this study, chloride penetration analyses with chloride ion concentration were carried out by the developed program. Also, the service life of concrete structures was predicted. The penetration depth was 32mm in case that chloride ion concentration wad 600ppm. It was shown that the service life of concrete structures with 40mm cover depth was 167 years even though they had been exposed at chloride ion concentration 600ppm during 100 years.

  • Degradations of durability and aesthetic performance in concrete happen during service life due to surface deterioration and dirt stains. Recently, many researches have been performed on self-cleaning and surface enhancement through surface impregnant using photocatalytic reaction with VOCs(Volatile Organic Compounds) removal. This paper is for preliminary study on surface impregnation with silicate and photocatalysis - $TiO_2$. For the work, two types of silicate based impregnants(CS - Coloidal Silica and SC - Sodium Alumina Silicate) are considered. Several tests for viscosity and surface tension are performed, and pull-off test on impregnated concrete is performed. For the surface impregnated concrete, $TiO_2$ is absorbed through submerging and spraying conditions. Through compressive strength test and SEM analysis, it is evaluated that spraying $TiO_2$ on surface impregnated concrete after 30min. of drying period is very effective both for strength enhancement and surface densification.

  • In this study, to examine the use of sulfur polymer as a coating agent for concrete, durability and hazard evaluations were performed. The result of the evaluation indicated that the chemical resistance of the coating agent for concrete was outstanding against acidic, base, and alkaline solutions. The evaluation of the bond strength after an accelerated weathering test depending on the mixing condition indicated that the most outstanding strength characteristic was obtained when silica powder and fly ash were mixed at the same time. The bond strength exceeded 1 MPa in every mixing condition even after the repeated hot and cold treatment of the coating agent specimen for concrete, and the SFS mix proportion showed the highest bond strength. The examination of the accelerated carbonation and chloride ion penetration resistance of the concrete coated with the coating agent indicated that the specimen coated with the coating agent using silica powder as a filler showed the most outstanding durability. When a fish toxicity test was performed to examine the hazard of the use of the functional polymer as a coating agent for concrete, the functional polymer was found to have no effect on the organisms. When the chemical resistance, freezing and thawing resistance, carbonation, and chloride ion penetration resistance of the coating agent were considered, substituting silica powder and fly ash as the fillers of the functional polymer by 20%, respectively, was the optimal level in the range of this study.
