Domestic or international existing researches regarding rail damage factors are focused on laying, vehicle conditions, driving speed and driving habits and overlook characteristics of track structure (elasticity, maintenance etc). Also in ballast track, as there is no special lateral spring stiffness of track also called as ballast lateral resistance in concrete track, generally, existing study shows concrete track has 2 time shorter life cycle for rail replacement than ballast track due to abrasion. As a result of domestic concrete track design and operation performance review, concrete track elasticity is lower than track elasticity of ballast track resulting higher damage on rail and tracks. Generally, concrete track has advantage in track elasticity adjustment than ballast track and in case of Europe, in concrete track design, it is recommended to have same or higher performance range of vertical elastic stiffness of ballast track but domestically or internationally review on lateral spring stiffness of track is very minimal. Therefore, through analysis of service line track on site measurement and analysis on performance of maintenance, in this research, dynamic characteristic behaviors of commonly used ballast and concrete track are studied to infer elasticity of service line track and experimentally prove effects of track lateral spring stiffness that influence curved rail damage as well as correlation between track elasticity by track system and rail damage to propose importance of appropriate elastic stiffness level for concrete and ballast track.
In this study, track dynamic interaction characteristics caused by the vehicle running through transitional section such as bridge abutments were studied using the finite element analysis program. The geometric condition of track was generated by trigonometric function and allowable maximum track irregularity is determined by KORAIL track maintenance criteria. The sub-infrastructure under rail fastener system was modelled by 3D solid elements. To reduce computational cost only half track line is numerically considered and the roller boundary condition was applied to each side of model. In this study, the vehicle-track dynamic interaction analysis was carried out for standard Korean transition section of concrete track and the dynamic behaviors were investigated. The dynamic characteristics considered are wheel load variation, vertical acceleration at body, and maximum Mises stress at each part of transitional section.

This study deals with the response of reinforced concrete beams strengthened with carbon fiber sheets. Test beams are subjected to static loading and repeated loading. Based on the static test results of the RC beams strengthened with carbon fiber sheets, repeated loading tests are performed. The variables of repeated loading test are composed of the number of carbon fiber sheets, the existence of U-shaped band at the end for anchoring, and loading rate of repeated loading, etc. Test results show the flexural behavior, the characteristics of strength, the characteristics of ductility, the change of flexural rigidity, and the amount of energy loss of RC beams under monotonic incremental loading and repeated loading. The failure strain of carbon fiber sheets is also estimated under repeated loading. From the experimental results, this work presents a basis of the data needed to analyze and design the static and dynamic flexural response of RC beams strengthened with carbon fiber sheets.

Recently, the interests in structural monitoring of civil infrastructures are increased. Especially, as the civil infrastructures such as bridges, tunnels and buildings become large-scale, it is necessary to monitor and maintain the safety state of the structures, which requires smart systems that can supply long-term monitoring during the service time of the structures. In this paper, we investigated the possibilities of fiber optic sensor application to the various structures. We investigate the possibility of using fiber optic Bragg grating sensors to joint structure. The sensors show good response to the structural behavior of the joint while electric gauges lack of sensitivity, durability and long term stability for continuous monitoring. We also apply fiber optic structural monitoring to the composite repaired concrete beam structure. Peel-out effects is detected with optical fiber Bragg grating sensors and the strain difference between main structure and repaired carbon sheets is observed when they separate each other. The real field test was performed to verify the behaviors of fiber Bragg grating sensors attached to the containment structure in Uljin nuclear power plant in Korea as a part of structural integrity test which demonstrates that the structural response of the non-prototype primary containment structures. The optical fiber Bragg grating sensor smart system which is the probable means for long term assessments can be applicable to monitoring of structural members in various civil infrastructures.

As earthquakes have frequently happened all over the world, huge losses of human life and property have occurred. Therefore, retrofitting and strengthen technologies of non-seismically designed structures in Korea are urgent. Also, there has been a growing interest about seismic retrofitting, where researches on the topic have been actively pursued in Korea. The study results showed that ductility inducing retrofitting method is more superior stiffness inducing method. In Japan, Super Reinforcement with Flexibility (SRF) was introduced. Therefore, in this study, seismic performance evaluation was performed through pseudo dynamic test and uniaxial compression test for RC column retrofitted by PolyUrea for ductility inducing retrofitting material. Uniaxial compression test results showed that strength of all specimens retrofitted by PolyUrea was higher than that of RC specimens. Also, all specimens retrofitted by PolyUrea also showed ductile fracture behavior. In pseudo dynamic test, by appling real earthquake record, the seismic behavior of RC column reinforced by PolyUrea was evaluated through relative displacement, reinforcement strain, displacement ductility, and dissipation energy. The results showed that PolyUrea helped to enhance seismic performance of RC columns.

In this study, noncomposite and composite eco-arch structures with I-beams and precast concrete(PC) decks were investigated. Four finite-element models(a steel-girder model, a steel-girder-and-several-PC-panels model, a three-steel-girder model, and a three-steel-girder-and-several-PC-panels model) using a general finite-element program, ABAQUS, were reviewed to predict the strength of the noncomposite and composite arch structures. Based on the results of the finite- element analysis, the behaviors of the four models were investigated, and deflection and strain gauges for the experimental specimen consisting of three steel girders and several PC panels were set up to obtain the ultimate strength. The ultimate strength of the specimen was estimated to be 1,961kN. The ultimate strength was much larger than the 1,380-kN load calculated using AASHTO LRFD Bridge Design Specifications(2007). The noncomposite and composite arch bridges were found to have enough strength for safety.

The objective of this study is to assess the strengthening effects of fiber reinforced polymer(FRP) sheets such as Carbon fiber, Glass fiber, and PET(polyethylene terephthalate) on reinforced concrete flexural members. Variables of theoretical analysis are types of strengthening materials, material properties and amount of strengthening materials. A virtual flexural member without FRP sheets was created as a control specimen to understand the structural behavior of the non-strengthened specimen in terms of elastic and ultimate cross section. In total, 11 specimens including one non-strengthened and ten strengthened specimens were investigated. Various variables such as types of strengthening, strengthening properties, and amount of strengthening were studied to compare the behavior of the control specimen with those of strengthened specimens with regard to moment-curvature relationship. Results of theoretical analysis showed that the moment capacity of strengthened specimens was superior to that of the control specimen. However, the control specimen indicated the best ductility among all the specimens. As the amount of strengthening increased, flexural performance was improved. Furthermore, the results indicated that the ductile effect of members was affected by the ultimate strain of FRP sheets. The strengthening effect on the damaged member was similar to that on the non-damaged one since there was less than 10% difference in terms of flexural strength and ductility. Therefore, even if a damaged member is treated as non-damaged for analysis there is probably no noticeable difference.

The objective of this study is to evaluate the effects of the replacement levels of grinded fly-ash on the repaired mortar based on a polymer. The main parameters are the curing temperature and replacement levels of grinded fly-ash. The curing temperature and the replacement levels of grinded fly-ash are varied at $40^{\circ}C$, $20^{\circ}C$ and $5^{\circ}C$, and between 0% and 35% of the total binder by weight, respectively. The flow in fresh mortar and compressive strengths according to ages, the relationship of stress-strain, elastic modulus and modulus rupture in hardened mortar, as well as scanning the electron microscopy and the X-ray diffraction of mortar, were measured, respectively. The test results showed that the flow, elastic modulus and modulus rupture are great in mortar specimens with 20~30% of the replacement levels of grinded fly-ash. In addition, compressive strengths according to ages were affected by the replacement levels of grinded fly-ash and the curing temperature indicated that the strength development ratio of mortar with 20% of the replacement levels of grinded fly-ash was greater than others. In the prediction of the compressive strength specified by the ACI 209 code, the strength development at an early and late age can be generalized by the functions of the replacement levels of grinded fly-ash and the curing temperature. In the analysis of scanning the electron microscopy and the X-ray diffraction, the number and intensity of peaks increased and the form of CSH gels on the surface of the particle of grinded fly-ash was observed.

Among many types of light rail transits (LRT), the rubber-tired automated guide-way transit (AGT) is prevalent in many countries due to its advantages such as good acceleration/deceleration performance, high climb capacity, and reduction of noise and vibration. However, AGT is generally powered by high-voltage electric power feeding system and it may cause electromagnetic interference (EMI) to measurement sensors. The fiber optic sensor system is free from EMI and has been successfully applied in many applications of civil engineering. Especially, fiber Bragg grating (FBG) sensors are the most widely used because of their excellent multiplexing capabilities. This paper investigates a prestressed concrete girder bridge in the Korean AGT test track using FBG based sensors to monitor the dynamic response at various vehicle speeds. The serviceability requirements provided in the specification are also compared against the measured results. The results show that the measured data from FBG based sensors are free from EMI though electric sensors are not, especially in the case of electric strain gauge. It is expected that the FBG sensing system can be effectively applied to the LRT railway bridges that suffered from EMI.

This study evaluated changes in fluidity and rheological properties over time for 3D printed composite materials, and evaluated compressive strength and splitting tensile strength properties for laminated and molded specimens. The composite material for 3D printing starts to change rapidly after 30 minutes of extrusion, and the viscosity of the material tends to be maintained up to 90 minutes, but it was confirmed that construction within 60 minutes after mixing is effective. The compressive strength of the laminated test specimen showed equivalent or better performance at all ages compared to the molded test specimen. In the stress-strain curve of the laminated specimen, the initial slope was similar to that of the molded specimen, but the descending slope was on average 1.9 times higher than that of the molded specimen, indicating relatively brittle behavior. The splitting tensile strength of the P-V laminated specimen was about 6% lower than that of the molded specimen. It is judged that this is because the interfacial adhesion force against the vertical load is affected by the pattern direction of the laminated test specimen.
