In the preliminary design stage of prestressed concrete (PSC) box girder bridges, the design factors decided by inexperience designer could heavily affect to the results of final design. There is a possibility that the design ends up with an excessively wasteful design. To achieve an economical design with preventing an excessive design, the optimal design technique has been developed using ADS optimal program and SPCFRAME in this study. The objective function for the optimal design problem is the material cost of box girders and constrained functions are constituted with design specifications and workability. The Sequential Unconstraint Minimization Technique (SUMT) is used for the optimal design in this study. We designed an uniform cross-section bridge and an ununiform cross-section bridge in the same design condition by optimal design technique developed in this study. Analyzing the results obtained for various tendon layouts, we suggest a standard tendon layout which gives the most effective structural behavior.

To predict the time-dependent behavior of concrete structures, the models which describe the time-dependent characteristics of concrete, i.e. creep and shrinkage are required. However, there must be significant differences between the displacements that are obtained using the given creep and shrinkage models and the measured displacements, because of the uncertainties of creep and shrinkage model itself and those of environmental condition. There are some efforts to reduce these error or uncertainties by using the model which are obtained from creep test for the concrete in construction site. Nevertheless, the predicted values from this model may be still different from the actual values due to the same reason. This study aimed to propose a method of estimating the creep coefficient from the measured displacements of concrete structure, where creep model uncertainty factor was considered as an error factor of creep model. Numerical validation for double composite steel box and concrete beam showed desirable feasibility of the presented method. Consideration of the time-dependent characteristics of creep as one of the error factors make it possible to predict long-term behaviors of concrete structures more realistically, especially long-span PSC girder bridges and concrete cable-stayed bridges of which major problem is the geometry control under construction and maintenance.

Application of mechanically stabilized earth wall (MSEW) abutment has been rapidly increasing in United States of America, Pennsylvania since 2002. MSEW is effective for reducing construction cost and period compared to general concrete reinforced wall. In the paper, theoretical background and conventional criterion of MSEW abutment that is widely used abroad are analyzed. Based on the results, application of suitable MSEW abutment to domestic bridge type is examined. For the application of MSEW abutment in Korea, load interacting with upper shoe in domestic bridge types and structural analyses of beam seat and pile are investigated. As a result, all applications are possible except for PSC BOX Bridge that has heavy self-weight of girder. Through two and three dimensional numerical analyses, horizontal behaviour mechanisms between pile and MSEW were analyzed and field tests are also carried out for seven piles behind earth walls. From results of field tests, it is confirmed that an angle of internal friction of backfill material needs to be greater than 34 degree to use H-Pile as foundation of MSEW.

The standard prestressed concrete I-girder bridge (PSC I-girder bridge) is one of the most prevalent types for small and medium bridges in Korea. When determining the member forces in a section to assess the safety of girder in this type of bridge, the general practice is to use the simplified practical equations or the live load distribution factors proposed in design standards rather than the precise analysis through the finite element method or so. Meanwhile, the live load distribution factors currently used in Korean design practice are just a reflection of overseas research results or design standards without alterations. Therefore, it is necessary to develop an equation of the live load distribution factors fit for the design conditions of Korea, considering the standardized section of standard PSC I-girder bridges and the design strength of concrete. In this study, to develop an equation of the live load distribution factors, a parametric analysis and sensitivity analysis were carried out on the parameters such as width of bridge, span length, girder spacing, width of traffic lane, etc. As a result, the major variables to determine the size of distribution factors were girder spacing, overhang length and span length in case of external girders. For internal adjacent girders, the determinant factors were girder spacing, overhang length, span length and width of bridge. For internal girders, the factors were girder spacing, width of bridge and span length. Then, an equation of live load distribution factors was developed through the multiple linear regression analysis on the results of parametric analysis. When the actual practice engineers design a bridge with the equation of live load distribution factors developed here, they will determine the design of member forces ensuring the appropriate safety rate more easily. Moreover, in the preliminary design, this model is expected to save much time for the repetitive design to improve the structural efficiency of PSC I-girder bridges.
A simple steel-concrete composite deck is developed for preventing the lateral torsional buckling of girders that are under construction and for reducing the term of works using H-shaped rolled beams as bridge girders. A new type of shear connectors is also developed for the composite behavior between a simple steel-concrete composite deck and the rolled beams by the connecting conditions between the deck and the girders. One is a connector bolt that is lengthened and split or tightened with two nuts and the other is an I-shaped rolled beam welded on a steel plate with a number of holes punched through the web. In this study, to estimate the shear strength of those shear connectors the push-out tests are performed and the test results are compared with that of the previous studies and the codes. The result of the push-out tests of the connector bolts showed that the shear performance is similar to that of the stud connector and revealed that the equation for the shear strength in the Korean Specification of Highway Bridge overestimates the shear capacity of the connector bolt whose diameter is larger than 19mm. From the push-out tests of punched I-shaped rolled beams with varying welding amounts, with the small amount of welding, shear capacity is governed by the shear capacity of welding. On the other hand, shear capacity is governed by the size of the punched I-shaped rolled beams, regardless of the amount of welding.

The purpose of this study was to calculate the temperature difference of the sectional elevation according to the asphalt thickness of the steel box girder bridge deck and provide data on the design basis accordingly. Asphalt thicknesses produced four steel box girder model specimens of 0mm, 50mm, 100m and 150mm. In each model, 17 to 23 temperature sensors were attached to upper concrete and steel box girders. Six temperature gauges were selected to compare the temperature difference with Euro codes. The maximum and lowest temperature were calculated at the reference atmospheric temperature of each model, and the temperature difference (slope) was calculated based on this calculation. Four models of temperature difference are presented at each model. The 0mm to 100mm temperature difference models showed a -0.9 to -1.5 degree lower temperature difference compared to the temperature difference of Euro codes at the top of the slab. Overall, the measured temperature difference was found to be between 5.45% and 8.33% compared to the Euro code. The standard error coefficient, which was calculated by multiplying the average temperature with the standard error, was calculated from a range of 2.50 to 2.51 times the average at the top and bottom. It is estimated that the proposed temperature difference model can be used as a basic data when calculating temperature difference criteria for bridges in Korea.

This paper presents an analytical prediction of Nonlinear characteristics of prestressed concrete bridges by strengthened of externally tendon considering construction sequence, using unbonded tendon element and beam-column element based on flexibility method. Unbonded tendon model can represent unbounded tendon behavior in concrete of PSC structures and it can deal with the prestressing transfer of posttensioned structures and calculate prestressed concrete structures more efficiently. This tendon model made up the several nodes and segment, therefore a real tendon of same geometry in the prestressed concrete structure can be simulated the one element. The beam-column element was developed with reinforced concrete material nonlinearities which are based on the smeared crack concept. The fiber hysteresis rule of beam-column element is derived from the uniaxial constitutive relations of concrete and reinforcing steel fibers. The formulation of beam-column element is based on flexibility. Beam-column element and unbonded tendon element were be involved in A computer program, named RCAHEST (Reinforced Concrete Analysis in Higher Evaluation System Technology), that were used the analysis of RC and PSC structures. The proposed numerical method for prestressed concrete structures by strengthened of externally tendon is verified by comparison with reliable experimental results.
Generally, the girder spacing of the two-girder composite bridge is from 5m up to 15m. To ensure the structural safety according to Korean Bridge Design Specification, the deck depth should be from 33 cm upto 73 cm. Using the transversal prestressing strands in concrete deck, we can reduce its depth about 10%. However, there is little experience on the design and construction of prestressed concrete(PSC) decks in Korea. This paper focuses on the behaviors of PSC deck. A literature survey is performed widely. Considering the characteristics of the two-girder bridge and the construction conditions in Korea, a cast-in-place PSC deck is recommended for the two-girder bridge with 6m girder spacing. To examine its structural behaviors and safety, three partial model deck specimens(3 m$\times$5 m) with real scale are fabricated md tested. One(PS34-RS) is 34cm depth with the stiffness restraint in longitudinal edges for simulating the real bridge deck. Another(PS34-NS) is same depth without the stiffness restraint, and the other(PS28-NS) is 28cm depth with the stiffness restraint. Under the static patch loading, each specimen had a larger ultimate flexural strength than the design value. Specimens with the stiffness restraint (PS34-RS and PS28-RS) showed the punching shear failure mode and specimen without that(PS34-NS) showed the flexural failure mode.

The integrity assessment of the bridge behavior is generalized by field data of a static load-deformation curve and dynamic properties such as impact factors and natural frequencies. Evaluating it with numerical analysis is a reasonable method. The results of the mockup test and the numerical analysis are corresponded with each other since the behavior of service load proceeds in elastic region. In case of the dynamic behavior of structure, especially for the analysis of vibration, the result of the mockup test differs from the result of numerical analysis a little due to the geometric shape and non-homogeneous materials. In order to converge on these tolerances, this study suggested several numerical models, analyzed the sensitivity and finally offered a practical modeling method for the estimation of bridge on the basis of the result of mockup test. Based on the model substituted concrete section for strands section, the natural frequency of the model composed with axial stiffness of strands or the model applied the modified modulus of elasticity was closest with the result of the mockup test.
In this study, the effects of cross beams on the lateral distribution of live loads in composite rolled H-beam girder bridges, were investigated through three-dimensional finite element analysis. The parameters considered in this study were the inertial moment ratio between the main girder and the cross beam, the presence of the cross beam, and the number of cross beams. The live load lateral distribution factors were investigated through finite element analysis and the customary grid method. The results show that there was no difference between the bridge models with and without a cross beam. The cross beam of the beam and frame types also showed almost the same live load lateral distribution factors. However, the finite element analysis showed that the concrete slab deck plays a major role in the lateral distribution of a live load, and consequently, the effect of the cross beam is not so insignificant that it can be neglected.
