Evaluating the quality of baseball pitch using PITCHf/x (PITCHf/x를 이용한 투구의 질 평가)

  • Major League Baseball (MLB) records and releases the trajectory data for every baseball pitch, called the PITCHf/x, using three high-speed cameras installed in every stadium. In a previous study, the quality of the pitch was assessed as the expected number of bases yielded using PITCHf/x data. However, the number of bases yielded does not always lead to baseball scores, or runs. In this paper, we assess the quality of a pitch by combining baseball analytics metric Run Expectancy and Run Value using a Random Forests model. We compare the quality of pitches evaluated with Run Value to the quality of pitches evaluated with the expected number of bases yielded.

A New System Implementation for Generating Holographic Video using Natural Color Scene (실사 컬러 영상을 이용한 홀로그램 비디오 생성 시스템 구현)

  • In this paper, we propose a new system which can generate digital holograms for natural color scene. The system consists of both a camera system for capturing images and softwares(SWs) for various image processings. The camera system uses a vertical rig with a depth and a RGB camera and a cold mirror which has the different transmittance according to wavelength for obtaining images with the same view point. The S/W is composed by the engines for processing and servicing the captured images and computer-generated hologram (CGH) for generating digital holograms using general-purpose computing on graphics processing unit (GPGPU). Each algorithm was implemented using C/C++ and CUDA languages, and all engines were integrated in LabView environment. The proposed system can generate 10 digital holographic frames per second using about 6K light sources.

  • The common way to obtain a stereoscopic image of a subject at a distance is to place two cameras on the parallel axis rather than crossing axis. To find the IAD and maximum focal length, left and right images are obtained by varying the IAD of cameras and the focal length of the camera lens and the depth budget for the obtained images is analyzed through post production. Then, the database for IAD and focal length of the camera lens with the depth range that does not cause visual fatigue and visual discomfort are developed. These data are used to design fuzzy control and deduce the IAD and focal length of the camera lens to shoot a subject at a distance, and the function of the fuzzy control is confirmed through the actual shooting within the range of deduced IAD and focal length of the camera lens.

  • 본 논문에서는 3차원 입체 비디오처리 기술의 최종목표인 디지털 홀로그램을 생성하는데 필요한 객체의 좌표와 색상정보가 들어있는 같은 시점과 해상도인 RGB 영상과 깊이 영상을 획득하여 가상 시점의 디지털 홀로그램을 생성하는 시스템을 제안한다. 먼저, 가시광선과 적외선의 파장을 이용하여 파장에 따라 투과율이 달라지는 콜드 미러를 사용하여 각각의 시점이 같은 다시점 RGB와 깊이 영상을 얻는다. 카메라 시스템이 갖는 다양한 렌즈 왜곡을 없애기 위한 보정 과정을 거친 후에 해상도가 서로 틀린 RGB 영상과 깊이 영상의 해상도를 같게 조절한다. 그 다음, DIBR(Depth Image Based Rendering) 알고리즘을 이용하여 원하는 가상 시점의 깊이 정보와 RGB 영상을 생성한다. 그리고 깊이 정보를 이용하여 디지털 홀로그램으로 구현할 객체만을 추출한다. 마지막으로 컴퓨터 생성 홀로그램 (computer-generated hologram, CGH) 알고리즘을 이용하여 추출한 가상 시점의 객체를 디지털 홀로그램으로 변환한다.

  • 3D stereoscopic cinema emerged as a new dominant media format. In principle, the stereoscopic cinema imitate the vision of the human being has two eyes. The stereoscopic cinema is filmed with 2 connected cameras at the same time and projected these 2 different images. With the stereoscopic glasses, the human being can see the overlapped images as a single 3D stereoscopic image. To make 3D stereoscopic cinema, it is very important to systemize the process of the 3D stereoscopic cinema production and to use the principle of the 3D stereoscopic cinema. This paper investigates the possibilities of the using the 3D stereoscopic principles such as the I.O.D, convergence point, parallax and the 3D comfort zone. Using the principle of the 3D stereoscopic cinema can be the technique of directing the film. Using the example of 3D stereoscopic short film My Birthday, I investigate the main technique of the 3D stereoscopic cinema.

  • Andre Bazin called the movie frame as "the window open to the world." This expression is close to realization through 3D films. The 'Avatar' released in 2009 was a new turning point for 3D films. Nowadays the theory and information about 3D films is overflowed. It is necessary to find practices and to accumulate data useful in production of 3D films. There are several ways of working to achieve high quality 3D films. In any way that's chosen, there are priorities to be considered to create well-balanced 3D films. The aim of this article is to review primary considerations in film-making and share the technical issues experienced during the production of "Let's go to the amusement park again, Mom." Because the current practical knowledge in making 3D film is shallow, this article will offer a possible reference for further research.

  • Many research institutes have studied 3D stereoscopic images since the release of 3D stereoscopic film 'Avatar' in 2009. Universities have conducted research on and studied 3D stereoscopic image in various ways, and even university curriculums have adopted 3D stereoscopic image production courses. However, universities face many difficulties in purchasing expensive equipment including cameras and rigs for 3D stereoscopic image contents production training. This paper addresses the 3D stereoscopic image content production curriculum using software in university. A practical training course was carried out based on the theoretical contents and theories that must be dealt with in 3D stereoscopic image contents production curriculum. As a result, students could understand the principles of 3D stereoscopic image production and produce various 3D stereoscopic images using various software applications. In this parer, proper instructional methods for 3D stereoscopic image contents production in university are discussed through this production course.

An Experimental Study on the Spray Characteristics of a Rotating Fuel Nozzle of a Slinger Combustor for Different Flow Rates and Rotating Speeds (슬링거 연소기 회전연료노즐의 유량과 회전수에 따른 분무특성에 대한 실험적 연구)

  • An experimental study was conducted to observe the spray characteristics for different flow rates and rotating speeds of a rotating fuel nozzle of a slinger combustor. The water spray ejected from the nozzle orifice was visualized using a high-speed camera and a light source. It was confirmed that the atomization was improved, as the flow rate decreased and rotating speed increased. The characteristic maps for the spray characteristics and performance parameters showed that the aerodynamic Weber number and the liquid-air momentum flux ratio were associated with the liquid primary breakup, and the liquid-air momentum flux ratio and Rossby number were closely correlated with the liquid ejection mode.

  • Recently the attention on digital hologram that is regarded as to be the final goal of the 3-dimensional video technology has been increased. A digital hologram can be generated with a depth and a RGB image. We proposed a new system to capture RGB and depth images and to convert them to digital holograms. First a new cold mirror was designed and produced. It has the different transmittance ratio against various wave length and can provide the same view and focal point to the cameras. After correcting various distortions with the camera system, the different resolution between depth and RGB images was adjusted. The interested object was extracted by using the depth information. Finally a digital hologram was generated with the computer generated hologram (CGH) algorithm. All algorithms were implemented with C/C++/CUDA and integrated in LabView environment. A hologram was calculated in the general-purpose computing on graphics processing unit (GPGPU) for high-speed operation. We identified that the visual quality of the hologram produced by the proposed system is better than the previous one.

Analysis of Spike Motion in Male Professional Volleyball foreigner Players (남자 프로배구 용병선수들의 스파이크 동작 분석)

  • This study was conducted to provide useful information for the scientific training of spikes and instruction, by analyzing all kinematical variants including time, distance, velocity, angle factors in spike movements of volleyball matches. The subjects were 4 foreigner players, who participated in the V-League of 2008-2009. The conclusion from this study is as follows. Time for a jumping step was .33s, and Angelko had a bit longer takeoff time than other players. In Angelko and Anderson who were leading in attack power, the whole distance of a spike motion was relatively short, less than 4m. The moment when the center of gravity reached the lowest point was when the right foot bearing weight in the jumping step was passing the left foot, and the highest point of gravity was 2.30m, which appeared just before the impact. The horizontal speed of the center of the gravity was highest as 4.19m/s at the beginning of a jumping step, and lowest at the stance phase of the fore foot just before takeoff. The vertical speed of the center of the gravity was lowest after the right foot touched the ground, and highest after the takeoff of the fore foot. Impact was 3.22m, and the highest ball speed was 28.18m/s.
