  • As a result of analyzing the effects of removing dental plaque according to using proxabrush by using the proportional odds models, targeting patients of practicing oral prophylaxis in juniors for the Department of Dental Hygiene at S university from March 10, 2007 to June 3, 2007, the following conclusions were obtained. 1. The goodness-of-fit in the proportional odds models is 1.2552 whose degree of freedom is 3, and p value is .7398, thereby implying that the proportional odds models are appropriate. And, regarding the effects of removing dental plaque and the independent matter of using proxabrush, as the test on $H_0:{\beta}=0$, the test statistics is 15.5496 whose degree of freedom is 1, and p value is 15.5496. This implies that there is high correlation between the effect of removing dental plaque and the use of proxabrush. 2. ML estimate on $\beta$ in the model can be $\hat{\beta}=1.2493$ (ASE = 0.3207). And, as for the tendency that the response will belong to being very good(this can be expressed to be $Y{\leq}j$) rather than being very bad, the tendency of using proxabrush is higher by the estimated odds ratio exp(1.2493) = 3.49 times than the response of not using proxabrush. 3. As for the estimated response in the proportional odds models, the estimated(cumulative) probability, which the response of using proxabrush is very good and will belong to the good effect of removing dental plaque, is 0.38(0.50).

  • The purpose of study was to improve the oral hygiene methods for early childhood. The author investigated the oral hygiene materials for early childhood and the oral hygiene methods used by 672 caregivers in Iksan city. The oral hygiene materials were oral tissue, finger brush, toothbrush sets according to the growth stages, electric toothbrush, child toothbrush, toothpaste sets according to the growth stages including eatable toothpaste, and child toothpaste, The rate of caregivers who used each materials was 62.5% for oral tissue, 70.9% for finger brush, 55.9% for toothbrush sets, and 87.4% for eatable tooth-paste. 79.0% of caregivers began toothbrushing from first eruption and about 1 year of age. The rate of swallowing toothpaste was 22% before 48 months, 9% from 48 to 59 months, and 3% after 60 months. The rate of children brushed by caregivers was 52% before 48 months, 42% from 48 to 59 months, and 26% after 60 months. The basic method of oral hygiene management for early childhood is to remove the dental plaque by toothbrushing, and the toothpaste may be used. Suffocation, accidental swallowing, and injury to the throat must be avoided. Generally, the fluoride toothpaste is not recommended before 3 years of age. The least amount of fluoride toothpaste should be used and caregivers should supervise children to prevent the swallowing of toothpaste.

  • For the purpose of improving the UV sterilization for toothbrush, the sterilizing effects by the UV light were studied. When toothbrushes were treated with the UV light for 5, 15, 30, 60 minutes, the sufficient antibacterial effect were shown after 15 minutes with 80% of bactericidal effects. To prevent the brownish stain on the sterilizer which was caused by the long exposure of UV light, no UV treatment for two hours after 15 minutes exposure were scheduled and then 3 minutes re-exposure were performed, which showed 97% of bactericidal effect. Also, the antibacterial effects of the sterilizer showed different results depending on the position of the toothbrush, it was recommended to adjust toothbrush to be exposed by the UV light directly.

  • The purpose of this study was to examine the use of dentifrice among preschoolers in an attempt to provide consumers with the right information on the choice of dentifrice and toothbrush for different age groups of children. The subjects in this study were parents who raised preschoolers in Seoul and Gyeonggi Province. A self-administered survey was conducted over approximately three months from May to July 2007 to find out the state of their children's use of dentifrice. After the collected data were analyzed, the following findings were given: The greatest group (51.5%) needed parental help with toothbrushing. The biggest group of the patients (35.6%) considered it necessary for children at the age of 6 and 7 to brush their teeth with the help of their parents. As to dentifrice squeezing and parental outlook on that, the biggest group of the parents (49.4%) replied their children squeezed the dentifrice for themselves, and the greatest group (42.2%) thought that children needed parental help with dentifrice squeezing by the age of five. Regarding dentifrice swallowing and parental perception of it, the biggest group (61.9%) saw their children swallowing the dentifrice, and the greatest group (73.7%) believed that children must not swallow the dentifrice. The biggest group of those who found it okay for children to swallow the dentifrice (62.5%) thought that it would be no problem to swallow the dentifrice for child. Concerning the use of toothbrushes, the biggest group (96.7%) had their children use toothbrushes for child. The above-mentioned findings of the study showed that the children who are at the age of 3 or down should use non-fluoride containing dentifrice or just a small amount of fluoride that is as equal as the size of a pea. Children must brush their teeth under the guidance of their parents, and sustained education should be provided about that.

  • Purpose. The purpose of this study is to compare five interdental cleansing products' effectiveness on removing artificial dental plaque on the interdental space of zirconia crowns. Materials and methods. A model with abutments on the right mandibular second premolar and first molar were prepared. 10 zirconia crowns for each abutment were fabricated. After applying artificial dental plaque between the zirconia crowns, a single clinician attempted to remove the plaque with five products: interdental toothbrush, end-tuft toothbrush, dental floss, Easypick, Water pik. They were conducted 10 times per group. The aspect and area of removed surfaces were analyzed using images taken with a digital camera. One factor analysis of variance was performed as a statistical analysis, and a post-hoc test was performed using the Scheffé method (P < .05). Results. There were differences in the area and the pattern according to the characteristics of the products. The largest area, including the marginal portion, was removed in the dental floss group. Interdental toothbrush group was the most effective in removing the dental plaque at the marginal portion. Easypick was less effective than the interdental toothbrush. The end-tuft toothbrush showed better results than other products in cleansing mesiobuccal and distobuccal area, but could not cleanse the area directly below the contact point. In Water pik group, artificial dental plaque was scarcely removed. The removal rate of artificial dental plaque was in the order of floss (69.47%), end-tuft toothbrush (49.36%), interdental toothbrush (44.20%), Easy pick (13.04%), and Water pik (0.59%). Conclusion. Dental floss showed the highest removal rate in the interdental space restored with zirconia crowns, while interdental toothbrush was the most effective in removing the dental plaque at the marginal portion.

  • The purpose of this study was to examine the knowledge of some adults about oral hygiene devices and their use of the oral hygiene devices. After a survey was conducted from December 3 to 17,2007, the answer sheets from 352 respondents were gathered. and the collected data were analyzed with a SPSS Ver. 17.0 program. The findings of the study were as follows. 1. Concerning the level of knowledge, the adults investigated knew the best that a toothbrush should be kept by making the head upward (76.77). On the other hand, they had little knowledge on water pick, tongue cleaner and interdental brush. 2. As for the level of use, they scored highest on keeping their toothbrushes by making the head upward(76.77), In contrast, they scarcely put water pick, electronic toothbrushes, tongue cleaner to use. 3. Knowledge impact of general characteristics involving mate(62.54). 50s over(66.28) and up, four family members(61.54), graduate school graduate(66.78), self-employed and, professionals(63.63), income of 1 to 1.5 million won(66.66), fathers were smokers(51.89) got the highest marks with a mean. 4. Use impact of the general characteristics female(47.70), 40s over 49s under(47.78), four family members(48.18), graduate school graduate(50.17), professionals(49.79), income of 1 to 1.5 million won(51.89), fathers were smokers(48.10) got the highest marks with a mean.
