  • Bentonite has been considered as a candidate buffer material in the underground repository for the disposal of high-level radioactive waste because of its low permeability, high sorption capacity, self sealing characteristics, and durability in nature. In this study, the potential for separation of bentonite particles caused by the groundwater erosion was studied experimentally for a Korean Ca-bentonite under the relevant repository conditions. Results showed that bentonite particles can be generated at the bentonite/granite interface and mobilized by the water flow although the intrusion of bentonite into fracture by swelling pressure was observed to be small. Different processes of mobilization of theses colloids from the compacted bentonite block have been identified in this study. The concentration of particles eluted in water was increased as the flow rate increased. Thus the result reveals that the erosion of the bentonite surface due to the groundwater flow together with intrusion processes is the main mechanism that can mobilize bentonite colloids in the fracture of the granite.

  • In this study, a WEP (Water and Energy transfer Processes) model was used to simulate the water cycle of the Dorimcheon catchment which suffers from the distorted water cycle as a typical urban catchment. Two different land uses in the past (i.e. 1975) and at present (i.e. 2000) were incorporated into the simulation to investigate the runoff characteristics resulting from the increase of the impervious ratio due to urbanization. The simulation results show that the concentration time is decreased and the peak discharge and the total runoff are increased by urbanization while the infiltration and baseflow are reduced. In addition, the effects of infiltration trenches and permeable pavements were also simulated to search for alternatives that can restore the distorted water cycle. The simulation results prove that the installation of both alternatives can restore the runoff characteristics to that prior to urbanization.

  • Laboratory column tests were conducted to analyze infiltration and water redistribution processes on the basis of rainfall. To efficiently measure moisture content within soil layers, this research developed a predictive model grounded in a convolutional neural network (CNN), a deep learning technique. The digital images obtained during the column tests were incorporated into the established CNN. The moisture content of each soil layer over time was effectively measured. The measured values were also in relatively good agreement with the moisture content determined using the moisture sensors installed for each soil layer. The use of CNN enabled a comprehensive understanding of continuous moisture distribution within the soil layers, as well as the infiltration process according to soil texture and initial moisture content conditions.

  • Joints on concrete road prevent failure and crack securing the moderate space when concrete slab expands and contracts as a function of varying temperature throughout all seasons. Filling joint sealants in joints can prevent the interruption of slab movement and failure due to the infiltration of alien substances, and also can prevent crack caused by freezing and thawing and Dowel bar corrosion resulted from water - rainfall and snowfall infiltration through the inside the pavement. They lead to the improvement of the commonality of road. This paper evaluates physical strength, weatherability and deicer resistance of a two-year aged sample from joint on concrete road and its virgin sample. It was found that there are significant differences in aspects of weatherability and adhesive force between the tested sample and silicon materials.

  • A finite difference program with 3-D governing equation expanded from 1-D self-weight consolidation is developed to analyze the consolidation behavior of surface dredged soil with horizontal drains. Various boundary conditions with horizontal drains and seepage pressure of pore water infiltrated to the drains are considered in the program. A laboratory soil chamber experiment for the consolidation of dredged soil is performed to validate the program and the measured settlement-time result is compared with the one predicted by the program. The influence of design conditions of horizontal drains such as horizontal installation spacing, installation depth and number of drain layers, on the consolidation is analyzed.

  • In this study, resin flow analysis of resin transfer moulding (RTM) method was performed for mould design of composite structure. The target composite structure was a tank used for fluid storage. Natural c fiber composite was adopted for composite structural design of the fluid storage tank. RTM was adopted for manufacturing of the tank using natural fiber composites. Resin flow analysis was performed to find the proper RTM conditions of the tank. The resin flow analysis was performed using the commercial FEM flow simulation software. After repeated analysis while changing the location of resin inlet and outlet, the proper resin filling time and pattern were found.

  • In this study, ASTM C 1202 which is most commonly used for evaluating the penetration resistance into the concrete is reviewed. The test results by ASTM C 1202 showed that the passed charge could be underestimated as the $OH^-$ ion concentration in the concrete is lowered when the concrete is mixed with the admixtures. Therefore, the modified method using the distilled water was proposed in the paper. According to the test results, the modified method is not susceptible to $OH^-$ ion and temperature rise. In addition, the long term emersion test for the concrete mixed with the admixtures in the NaCl solution showed that the chloride diffusion coefficient tested by the modified method have higher correlation compared to the conventional ASTM method.

  • In this paper, a numerical analysis of one-dimensional viscous fluid flow in a rock joint using UDEC code is performed to evaluate the effect of design parameters on injection performance. We consider injection pressure, fluid compressibility, time dependence of yield strength and viscosity of injected grout fluid, and mechanical deformation of joint as the design parameters, and penetration length and flow rate of injection are investigated as the injection performance. Numerical estimations of penetration length and flow rate were compared to analytical solution and were well comparable with each other. We showed that cumulative injection volume can be over-estimated by 1.2 times than the case that the time-dependent viscosity evolution is not considered. We also carried out a coupled fluid flow and mechanical deformation analysis and demonstrated that injection-induced joint opening may result in the increment of cumulative volume by 4.4 times of that from the flow only analysis in which joint aperture is kept constant.
